Surface Book Screen Battery Not Working

I have a surface book 1 and the tablet (screen) battery is not working. The battery on the laptop is working but the when I look at the battery charging level the screen is always at 0%. This seems to be a software issue since when I manually detach the tablet the tablet is able to run even though the laptop shows 0% charge. I have contacted microsoft support and they want me to factory reset my laptop and lose all my data. There is no applicable solution online. Any ideas?

Given the age of the device and experience with lots of surface pro 3 & 4 with bad batteries ( swelling, not holding charge ) I would back up your data and reset the unit.

There were issues with some firmware and surface pro 3 ( not the laptop, but similar enough ) and battery life.

Resets fixed the problem on at least one. There is an option to keep files, it will break non MS applications though.

There are a number of potential solutions in this thread. Perhaps one of the less drastic ones ( contact cleaning, bios option changes, etc ) can help before a factory reset.
