Would it be worth (or is it even possible) to turn this into a sleeper build? Maybe by getting ram up to 16Gb, swapping the pentium for a better 4th gen, adding a sata SSD and a cheap GPU? (the mobo has a x16 PCIE but when I bought it they told me I couldn't install a gpu down the line, maybe they were worried about the size?)

Windows 7 ftw

Swap the cpu for an e3 1220/5 v3, e3 12x5 have igpu if you ever need it

Youll prob only be able to use a 75w card at most cause the psus are garbage

Check your psu and see if it has any proprietary connectors, if not then just yeet that stock psu and find a decent 500w unit, if it cant fit then you are gonna have to mod the case to accomodate it, this will allow for better gpus (you may need sata/molex to 8 pin adapters though)

You sure you can swap the CPU? Prebuilts don't usually like that. Even if you could I'd keep the money and save up for something more recent but you do you.

Also did you check if the PCIE slot actually works? Maybe the previous seller damaged it hence the warning.

Edit: Also check the PSU as the guy above me pointed out

The motherboard and PSU is gonna be the weakest links in here. The maximum of what it supports according to HP is an i7-4790 with a 16 GB of 1600mhz RAM. But the silver lining is the fact that it is a standardized size (microATX to be exact) so PSU mounting will be the main issue you gonna have to tackle.

it's refurbished and in a pretty good state, but I unfortunately don't have anything to test whether the pcie works or not

for the swapping, the sellers were actually the ones that recommended it for me, I needed a cheap computer for zoom and wanted the possibility to upgrade it even if ever so slightly, and they recommended this one since I can kinda upgrade the cpu to something better

I mean... Theyre numerous. Depends on what platform you wanna go with.

The problem is the PSU size, either ATX or SFX is your best bet for good quality common PSU. If the size is proprietary or way off compared to the 2 standards, you gonna have to start hacking that case to mount it proper.

Or just tape your psu onto the case, itll work but make sure you use a ton of tape so it doesnt fall off

Thanks everyone for your replies!

Ok so let's say I get a 500w psu and somehow jam it in there

Get my hands on an i7-4790 and a 750Ti or 1050Ti

What kind of performance will I be looking at? Gaming/editing/gamedev? idk whatever things you can do with computers

Also I'll probably need a fan if I am putting this much in a prodesk 600 case
