You answered your own question. It is a backwards compatible protocol. But personally, anything below 4 for audio is horrible.

Is bluetooth backwards compatible, e.g. can I use a bluetooth 5.0 headset with a 4.0 adapter? I've been able to use the headset on my iphone 4s which I know doesn't have bluetooth 5, and there have been a few dropouts but nothing major.
