Hello. I realized 2 years or less ago, that when windows tries to install updates, it would fail. I retried it manually, and it kept failing with the first image being shown. I tried reinstalling windows while saving my personal files, and it seemed like it was working. But then at the end, it reverted the changes. I just narrowed the problem down after going to this site https://appuals.com/windows-10-wont-install-or-download-updates/ . I found out that the problem is my BITS (background intelligent transfer service) as it was stopped. You can see it in the 2nd pic. I started it and retried and it still didn't work, and I relooked at BITS and it was stopped again! It keeps cutting off after about 2 minutes. The action on startup was set to manual, so I set it to automatically start on startup and restarted my comp. After 2 minutes, once again, it shut off and the startup was set to manual. I tried the steps in that link I previously listed and the solution 4 actually helped once and only once. After restarting, windows update actually said check for updates and was actually doing it for more than 1 seconds. Then BITS stopped again, and I was unable to get it checking for updates again.

I have a windows 10 home Version 1709 build 16299.192 ,

1080ti gpu,

ryzen 7 3700x

1TB ssd

What version of Windows are you on?

The current version is 20H2.

If you are on a version older than 1909 or 2004 you are better off doing a clean install of the latest version. When you do this I would delete all previous install files, so backup anything you want to keep.

Major Windows 10 version updates tend to cause many issues when updating more than one version at a time. For example going from 1809 to 1909 has caused many issues for the computers at my work. A clean install of Windows 10 fixed those issues.

What would you say is the best way for a clean install? I have tried reinstalling while saving personal files and it wouldn't work. I have a flash with windows and my important shit on another flash drive.

Use the flash drive to reinstall windows. Click on custom installation and manually delete all partitions on the drive. Then create a new partition leaving the partition size as default. It will create several partitions, this is normal and you should leave them alone. Then continue the install as normal.

When you do this you will delete all files on the drive so you will need to backup any files that you do not want to lose.

Since updating while saving personal files has not been working, the only way I see that you will be able to update windows is to do a fresh install where you do not save any personal files.
