Sudden CPU overheating

Go to solution Solved by BetteBalterZen,

Update:

So I had my 8700K delidded. Got a custom nickel plated cobber IHS with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut and this certainly got my temps under control.
I can now run my CPU at stock again (4.3GHz all core) without insane temp spikes.

Core Temp screenshot is after a Cinebench R23 run

Hello all

Please help me figure out why my CPU suddenly got way warmer. Or I mean, give me opinions on what might be wrong.

So, right after I got my 3090, my CPU's temps have gone through the roof. Yes, my case is very well ventilated. Almost all air in the top of my case where my AIO radiator is is cool. I think my CPU already had this "problem" before I got the 3090. I just think the problem shows now that I'm able to push higher FPS. I'm not 100% sure though.

So I think I remember my CPU was always sitting in the 60/65c's when I got it (with no OC). I then started experimenting with overclocking and was able to push 4.7 all cores with stable temps (like peaks near 75c) for a long time.

Suddenly one day my CPU was not stable anymore, so I just removed the OC. (back then I had a GTX 1080Ti and played in 2560x1080).

Then as time went by, my CPU's temps have gotten higher and higher. And after I got my 3090 installed, I saw after some hours of FH4 gametime, I had peaks near 95c on some cores, which is just insane.

In Battlefield 5, I had 3 cores on 95c and 1 core 98c, which is even more insane.

I then bought a new AIO (HX100x), because I thought it might have been my old one, which was 6 years old. installed the new AIO and temps was better. Had peaks just above 90c in Battlefield and only on 1 core.

But still, these temps are very high... Yes, I do play in 5120x1440p now, yes I do pull more frames with the 3090, yes it will make my CPU run hotter, yes my CPU is the 8700K, which is warm, but 90c? Really?

So, to make my CPU "relax", I've had to turn on Best Case-Scenario in BIOS for SVID, and take my clocks down from 4.3GHz to 4.1GHz, to make sure my temps only peak at 80 after hours of gameplay.

Is this right? Is the 8700K just this warm, when you push it with a 3090? Also, have the internal thermal paste or whatever it's called, gotten worse? If that's even possible. Is delid needed?

I hope someone with some expertise can help me figure out what exactly is wrong, if anything "is wrong" actually, and if delid is the only thing that can save my CPU.

Thanks 🙂

It might not be the entire cause of the problem. But the 3090's rated TDP is 50 Watts higher than what Tom's hardware measured the absolute highest power draw to be for the 1080 ti. My point is that the 3090 kicks out so much more heat, and if you have something like a founders then half of that cooler is blowing air right onto your cpu area, might be the cause.

Oh, extra thing aswell I forgot to write:

I also have faster RAM installed today; 3600MHz CL16.
Back in the day where I remember my 8700K ran cool, I had 3200MHz CL16.

I do know higher MHz RAM actually OC's the memory controller, but it shouldn't increase the temps to the 90c.

Yes true. I have thought of this. I have the ROG STRIX 3090 model. And it certainly does kick out a good amount of heat but I have a very strong exhaust setup and the air around my AIO is actually alright, so I don't think this is the problem. 🙂
