BIOS not recognizing RAM?

I have an old ASUS M5A97 (non-plus) version 1.02 along with other parts including 2x4GB of Corsair DDR3-1600 that will be repurposed for a Minecraft server. My problem is that the BIOS isn't detecting all 8GB of memory unless the RAM is in single-channel mode. I have checked both memory sticks and confirmed they worked, and both seem to experience the same problem. How this be fixed, and are the DIMM slots broken? If it has to be in single channel, what are the performance downsides? halp me
