Community of Tech!

I am a common entry level gamer who wishes to treat his fingers to the finest quality of keyboards money can buy.

I have absolutely no experience in mechanical keyboards and would like advice on switch types and models.

Judging on my current membrane keyboard I definitely  want heavy switches.

As for the rest I play dota a lot and I do require things like easier to do double tapping.

Currently I have been looking at Thermaltake's MEKA G Unit with Cherry MX black's

Love to hear your suggestions!

Well for double tapping it's definitely better to get a linear switch because of their reset vs actuation point is a lot better than on Cherry MX Blues and Greens, but you don't really get the tactile bump and I personally don't enjoy typing on linear switches too much after an extended period of time. Personally I find Cherry MX Browns to be perfectly fine for gaming as well as typing and haven't had any real issues with double tapping, although if you prefer heavier switches you might want to take a look at Cherry MX Clears, there's the Code Mechanical Keyboard which uses those switches and man does it seem brilliant.

But it's best if you can go to a local computer store that has a couple of demo mechanical keyboards to try out because while we can offer you recommendations when it comes to key switches it's really a matter of personal taste. Also Ducky Shine 3 brilliant keyboard and it has both flashing lights and comes in most key switches.

Thanks for the feedback, unfortunately I have found it hard to find anywhere near to where I live that has key type demos, Australia has also seems to have limited choice with key switches as they have to be shipped. Keyboards like the ducky shine I can only find in reds or blues. I would really prefer some heavier switches and this is what I was able to find. Does anyone know if its a good keyboard? I had a look at some Razer keyboards earlier and heard bad things on them so I don't want to be trumped on quality.

Any Keyboards exclusively come in brown? they are the only real ones I can find :(

CM storm quickfire series keyboards come with brown, blues and reds, if you are looking for blacks, the steelseries 6gv2 is a good option

Have you taken a look at PC Case Gear? They are based in Melbourne and that's where I've bought all my mechanical keyboards because they have such a wide range. Unfortunately they are an online store, but if you go to pick up your packages in person or order with one of their terminals I believe their keyboards use Cherry MX Brown off memory.

i'd definitely recommend you to either get a key switch sampler or go to a local store to try all different types. here are the most common switch types briefly explained:

MX Blue: clicky sound, tactile feel (not linear)

MX Brown: no clicky sound, tactile feel (not linear)

MX Red: no clicky sound, linear (no tactile feel)

all of those are rather light weight keys. there also are:

MX Green: heavier version of MX Blue

MX Clear: heavier version of MX Brown

MX Black: heavier version of MX Red

I guess you wouldnt want Clears or Greens since they basically suck at double tapping. Maybe you should check out Blacks. Heavy and fast. However, for typing I'd rather switch to Blues or Browns. Due to their tactile pressure point you are less likely to mistype and they feel a little more similar to rubber domes.

I Have been an avid user of PC Case Gear but can never find anything but reds and blues?
