i got this kit off of reddit a few weeks ago, and it's been running fine for my games. however, i was running furmark this morning stress testing a gpu and got some BSODs randomly, which seems to be memory issues. running some memtests on these shows that theyre throwing errors at XMP, even if i give it 1.4v or force 2T rather than the automatic 1T+geardown. i know that QVLs don't really matter, although these do happen to be on the QVL for this board... twice! https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM4/ROG_STRIX_X570-E_GAMING/AMD_Matisse_for_ROG_STRIX_X570-E_GAMING_DRAM_QVL_20190912.pdf

any other things i can do to see if these sticks will work properly? cpu is an r5 3600 which i've confirmed to work at 1800 fclk with other ram, i've set all memory parameters on the board to factory defaults with just DOCP enabled, and overheating should not be an issue in my p500a. i appreciate any help!

I understand that everyone seems to buy this kit, but it's not a good kit. Nothing but issues, can go back through this section and read about it many times.

The kit you probably should have gotten would not Have the "C" at the end and would be a little more expensive B-Die.

Try 3200mhz, test stability and OC up from there. Good Luck.

ah, wasnt aware that its a crap kit. i've seen the 16-19-19-39 kit recommended a lot as a good set-and-forget kit for ryzen, i thought hynix c die was at least average?

Nothing is a promise past 3200mhz (IMC capability) and generally OC with 16GB while 32GB is a little more difficult for the IMC to handle.

I have this exact kit. It is not crap, but it is also not B-die hence the lower price. 3600 16 16 16 36 has to be B-die where the looser bin for this kit 16 19 19 39 can be several different memory types. So without knowiing exactly which memory IC you kit has it varies depending on when the module was produced, the OC potential will vary.

My kit with Hynix CJR will do 3733 16 19 19 36 (That is is high as my IF will go)

Having said that what is your Vsoc, VDDC IOD, and VDDR?

fair enough but asus has a ton of 3600mhz dual rank and quad rank configs validated on this board, might just be a problem with the kit but i dunno how i'd tell the difference. this is the same board that i used to oc 2x16gb b die to 3600c14, but obviously these aint b die lol

these are at least a year old (the price sticker on em says 250 bucks lmao), i'll check the mfg date on the dimms next time i reboot. i have all voltages on auto, heres a snapshot of ryzen master:

nothing unusually high, i suppose i could tweak higher and lower settings to see if that helps. here's a thaiphoon burner shot too:

But your IMC is not exactly the same as the testing cpu which for all we know was an AMD hand picked cpu.

Memory you want for overclocking, pretty much in this order, but Hynix is at the bottom really.

B-Die (samsung)

Rev.E (Micron)

DJR (SK Hynix)

CJR (SK Hynix)

My end statement, go 3600mhz 16GB B-Die's 2 sticks Single Rank modules (cause it costs less for the bandwidth) and you'll max the IF. Unlink and probably take the kit past 4000mhz. This is my opinion, take it as you need to.

If you need the 32GB and really really like the RGB to pay the extra for it, then get the same exact kit except drop the "C" from the end of it.

i'm at a crossroads where i'd prefer to spend ~400-450 on a cpu, which gets me a secondhand 10850k or a 5800x. i'd also consider stretching the budget for a 5900x but i feel like that'd be unintelligent for a strictly gaming build, though i do play a lot of cpu intensive games. gamersnexus had that "best realistic overclock" video with the 5600x vs 10600k which yielded good gains for both, so i wonder how the 10850k/10900k would hold up with similar tuning. steve also had that bit about 2 vs 4 ranks of memory, so i'd prefer to stick with 2x16gb as that seems universally good for overclocking while still getting dual rank gainz. any thoughts on what cpu i should go with? hell i could even just go with a 3900x for now...

Gaming you want all the horse power you can afford. So a 5600X

The memory, keep what you have, just see if it's stable at 3200mhz. Maybe will run 16-18-18 (or tighter) ?

Intel is between 3000 series and 5000 series performance. Actually not bad bang for the buck IMO.

My overclocked 8700K actually games better than Zen 2. So I don't think a 3900X would be a smart choice for gaming.

so i did a bunch of memtest stuff and it seems that my cpu is the culprit. memtest86 throws the same errors every single time regardless of the fclk i set, even at jedec 2133. it ran 3600c14 at 1:1 perfectly fine last time i had it installed, is it possible that reseating the chip in the socket might fix this?

No a reseat probably won't help. The Cpu (IMC) doesn't like the memory kit......

that would cause it to throw the exact same errors, in the exact same tests, with the exact same outputs, on the exact same cores, with differing memory/fabric clocks? i suppose i can try a different kit to completely rule these dimms out, i've got like 4 or 5 kits of vengeance lpx and some other random kits laying around lol

For sure try different kits.

But if you're looking for fast kits at 3600mhz, start here. 16GB not 32GB and no RGB and you'll probably Easily pull 3733mhz stable.

eh i plan on going back to the dual rank versions of those with rgb, i only swapped to these because a) i love how neos look and b) i got a really good deal on em. last time i got 3600c16 b die but i may try 3200c14 to see if i can replicate my old overclock (which is still in my sig cause i'm lazy lol)

chances are that these hynix ics might not even be that bad, if it turns out to be the chip as the issue. that other guy in this thread had pretty decent results with cjr which seems to be average for these particular ics, 3733c16 for 50-100 bucks less than b die aint something to scoff at

Heres the thing though.... I never used the word "crap" or "bad". That's something you injected into the conversation.

The struggle is real. My Zen+ does 3733mhz memory and IF with 109$ kit of 16GB B-Die. Like the one I linked you above there.....

But it's not that the kit is bad, or the cpu is the issue, like you describe it. Just no 2 systems are the same. Replicating some other guys settings is hard when all you got was, "hey I can run this frequency. On X kit." But he at least mention the ICs being CJR which are ok for clocking. But so far, nothing record breaking.

But why not try other processors? Or different motherboards or both with that kit of ram?

not a good kit = bad, no? :P

in any case, 1866 fclk on zen+ is certainly a kickass bin, considering that most people are stuck around 1466-1600. i'd have no problems with the 16gb kit you linked but with how inefficient game developers are these days you're likely to run out of ram in games if you don't meticulously shut down other tasks in the meantime. i've always got chrome, discord, and sometimes a stream going, so 2x16gb it is.

and i agree that every kit, cpu, imc, and motherboard are different and you can have random issues just due to weird hardware samples. but any sort of baseline level of performance/overclocking is useful for getting an idea of what to expect. like if i ran out and got a 1600af i would expect the fclk to top out at 1466-1600, though its fully likely to go higher or lower due to the silicon lottery.

as for other hardware, i've unfortunately sold off all of my other zen 2 chips to fund my next upgrade. but if a reseat/memory swap doesnt work then i may bust out my b450m pro4. supposedly that board can handle 3600mhz ram lol
