So i want to upgrade my sisters laptop because it only has 4GB of ram i am planning to replace it with a single 8GB stick what do i need to know in terms of compatability does it just have to be ddr3 ?

Without knowing the CPU, you'll want to match that DIMM as closely as possible.

You'll need DDR3L (Low-Voltage), 1600 MHz memory. Sometimes this is also called PC3L-12800

As long as it isn't a 1st Generation Intel Core CPU, it should be able to run an 8 GB stick.

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Linux - Fedora
