very frustrating nginx errors

I have been working for literally hours on getting my site up on nginx. I am following this very helpful vultr guide on deploying this. 

I already have the files that I want. All I need is to make a symbolic link to my website files. I get the same error all the time, after I have made the link and restart nginx:

Job for nginx.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status nginx.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

What is going on?
