Hi all, I'm looking for a GPU to purchase. I currently have a Ryzen 3400G, and I would like to run games better than what the intergraded graphics can offer. I was thinking of holding off for the 3070, and then look into a CPU upgrade to prevent bottlenecking, but I would to see what tech savvy folk have to say first.

1st question: What's the best GPU could I pair with my current CPU?

2nd question: If I do go for a 3070, what CPU should I get? ( I was thinking Ryzen 3900x)

My budget will be around $1902 on the 16th-ish. My build currently consists of a B450 Tomahawk AM4 ATX mb, PowerSpec 500 Watt 80 Plus ATX Non-Modular ps, and 2x8 GB DDR4 - 3200 mem. I would prefer not to upgrade the motherboard or power supply but if it's advised for an upgrade, I will consider it. Thanks!

The 3400G is ~15% slower than the 3600, and the 3600 doesn't bottleneck a 2080Ti in most titles, so I'd expect you to be fine. Bottlenecking really depends more on the games you play. If your CPU is slower, CPU-bound games won't run as well as GPU-bound games.

However, I would recommend you upgrade that power supply. Recommended spec for the 3070 is 650W, but your CPU takes very little power, so 600W should be fine.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

You will definitely need a better psu for the 3070. Also your motherboard will most likely require a bios update for zen 2 and definitely require one for zen 3.

The MSI B450 Tomahawk AM4 ATX was released post zen-2, so you won't need to update the BIOS to use it with a 3400G, or any other 3XXX processor.

The B450 Tomahawk was first available October 01, 2018 on Newegg, well before Zen 2. Unless you are referring to the B450 tomahawk max which does support zen 2 out of the box. Also the 3400g is based off zen+, which is why b450 motherboards that don't support zen 2 can support it.
