Android 4.4.2 sms transfer using PC

ok so my dad will NOT let go of a phone once he start's using it.  It took his old nokia flying off the hood at 35mph about 4 or 5 years ago and bursting into pieces for him to get a smartphone.  Now I'm in a situation again with that smartphone where the phone stopped updating to the cloud 4 or 5 month's ago and I need to get information off of it and onto an identicalish phone, there's a catch though, the screen got wet and now it won't display anything.

 

I had a friend of mine try to image the phone but apparently it only grabbed the big stuff because all of the system folders are empty.  I still have the phone and can connect to it via USB.

 

If anyone can guide me in the direction of recovering the SMS history? That would be amazing.  I've tried looking for mmssms.db and can't find it on the phone, I found msgstore.db but just googled it and apparently that's whatsapp not sms.

 

Phones is an Alcatel onetouch fierce 2 so I can't use official programs to transfer from one phone to the other like kies from samsung.

 

This is his business phone so it would be amazing if I could get his sms history.

I've used SMS Backup & Restore on my (don't start) Android 4.4.4 phone, and it works like a charm. You can back up to Google Drive or (my choice) Dropbox. Put the app on the new phone and point it at the file, and it will repopulate.
