Budget (including currency):  undefined

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: mostly gaming

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):  no existing parts and no peripherals/monitors needed - I have all that already. would like 1440p @ 144hz.

So here is what I am thinking.  I am currently deployed (navy).  My xbox completely let me down by (apparently) not being tagged as my "home" xbox and will not let me launch the 15+ games I downloaded onto it for this deployment, i have scoured the internet and there is no fix for this unless I can connect the xbox to the internet which is not an option.  I have had to improvise and started gaming on my laptop, a surface laptop 2; it has a gtx 1070 but it isn't the best gaming machine.  I have to deploy again 3 months after I return from this deployment.  Another 8+month deployment and I am not trying to continue gaming on this laptop.  I would rather build a small form factor PC that can actually play games at decent frame rates.

I have that deployment $$ so I can spend a bit of cash, but I have never built small form factor. I will be able to build somewhere in the november/december time frame so with the assumption a bunch of new hardware drops (and depending what price it drops at) I will either go new on the GPU or buy a used 2080TI.  I would like to go with the xx80 series of GPU so I will need some space.

Does anyone have recommendations on a good mini mobo, case, and power supply?  The case would need to be somewhat compact but house a full 2080 (or 3080 which I assume will be roughly the same size), and everything else.

Thanks for any tips!

edit: included the resolution and refresh rate

That new-ish NZXT Xbox case clone looks pretty neat.  You could check that out.  LTT did a build with it not too long ago as well.

Really?  I will have to make a note of that to watch later; no youtube access right now to watch videos.  I will look up the case though! Thank you

SFF machines require a bit of work to get set up, and it can get very complicated, very quickly. How much room do you have? I would just build a standard - ish mATX gaming PC in something like the Lian Li 205m. If not, the NZXT H1 would be an option, check out the video from LTT about it.

Space is pretty tight on a ship unfortunately, but the difference of a couple square feet is do-able.  I just dont want a big tower to move around.  That's why I always went with console for shipboard life.
