Trident Vs. Dominator

Go to solution Solved by JefeB,

I actually found an article that answers this exact question in case anyone else runs into the same issue ( https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gskill-trident-z-neo-32gb-ddr4-3600,6258.html ). The long and the short of it, is unless you're a Corsair lover through and through or want your computer to appear (and be) more expensive; the G.Skill performs just as well at a much better price point.

I've been using 32 GB (8GBx4 Dual Channel) of Corsair Dominator DDR4-3600 C16-18-18-36 (https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Memory/DOMINATOR-PLATINUM-RGB/p/CMT32GX4M4K3600C16#tab-tech-specs) that I purchased directly from Corsair, however I had to file for an RMA due to a faulty DIMM. These things happen, so I'm not going to knock them for the one bad DIMM. The cost for this was $470.

In its place, I purchased G.Skill Trident. Microcenter near me only had a 16GBx4 of DDR4-3600 C16-19-19-39 according to the box (https://www.gskill.com/specification/165/326/1562839473/F4-3600C16D-32GTZN-Specification according to the site) for a total of 64GB costing only $360. Personally, I think 64GB is waaay overkill, however CL16 is worth the extra money - at least until DDR5 comes out.

I do get subjectively fine performance from Dominator and G.Skill, they both benchmark around the same, I like both aesthetics (but having most of my hardware connected via iCue is very convenient) and 32GB is more than enough. However, I'm getting double the capacity for over $100 less.

My questions is: Do I stick with the Devil I know for the extra $100 and half the capacity; or just keep the 64GB of G.Skill, save the money, and work with something I'm not as familiar with and benchmarks around the same as 32GB of Dominator?

For reference: I'm running an Asus X570 Crosshair 8, Ryzen 3900x, and an Aorus 2080 Super OC in a Dynamic O11 with 10 fans total and a 34" ultrawide.

I mean I would. If there is no down side in your work load to have more ram and it’s less expensive while having the same price I’d stick with the trident.

i personally use a 16 gig set of trident z’s and I love them.

Hopefully you, like many whom don't know, get to know..... that you probably won't be running 3600mhz on 64GB (16GB x 4) any time soon and might save some money and have better compatibility at 3200mhz or less.

Good Luck!

Agreed, that's why I'm sticking with higher specs, I'm trying to future-proof my rig so I get hopefully get at least 5 years (or more) out of the components I have.

My question is: I know Dominator is very tightly spec'd, but I'm not familiar with G.Skill's manufacturing process. Usually there's a reason something costs $100+ more than a comparable item. Is there a dropoff in quality between the two or will I still be on par with the Dominator by keeping the G. Skill?

I don't disagree. My question is more: I know Dominator is very tightly spec'd, but I'm not familiar with G.Skill's manufacturing process. In less than 5 years time DDR5 will be on the streets......

If you want fast higher quality memory, Ask, I'll drop you a link to the 2 kits I use.

Exactly, I want to be able to keep up and wait for the prices to balance out while keeping up relative performance. What kind of memory do you recommend?

For only 3600mhz, I recommend this kit.

https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232194

They where on sale for a month or so at 119$.

This kit is probably arguably THE best kit for 3600mhz DDR4 non RGB.
