Good day everyone,

i am reopening my issue with new knowledge.

i previously posted in this topic:

I hope this is allowed.

I am experiencing game crashes and Bsod's as well as simple Blackouts while playing games.
Not every game causes crashes but some do.
I have experienced crashes in:
"Rise of the Tomb Raider"
"Ori and the will of the WIsps"

The Bsod's usually hint somewhere at a problem with the RAM but they almost always happen when the graphics card is maxed out.
Which is one reason why i thought the PSU might be the problem.

My Setup:

  • Intel i7 7700k
  • MSI Z270 Gaming pro Carbon
  • MSI RTX 2070 Super Ventus OC
  • Be quiet! Straight Power 11 650 W (after previous suggestions i changed my psu today but got a game crash and a bsod some time after installing it.)
  • 2x Corsair 8Gb lpx 2400Mhz cl16 (Dual Channel Mode)
  • 1x Corsair 16GB lpx 2400Mhz cl16
  • 1x samsung 970 m2 (system drive)
  • 2x samsung 860 (games and old system)
  • 1x 4tb WD Blue

The 2070 is hooked up to the 12V lane 3 which can supply around 260W on its own.

The operating system is around 4 days old on a new ssd.

Obviously that also means that the graphics drivers are new.

Bios, chipset driver  landriver etc. are up to date.

I hope someone has an idea.

Minidumps are attached.

Cheers.

DWM.exe is your Desktop Windows Manager. Maybe some bad ram (or incorrect RAM timings/voltages, etc. Are you doing any OCing or using XMP?)

No, as insane as it sounds but both CPU and RAM are running with default settings.
The only thing overclocked is the 2070 but i bought it that way.

That day i think i also noticed a high usage of the GPU by the dwm.exe

Yeah now that the PSU is ruled out i can only imagine it being the RAM or the Mainboard.

I previously thought that it is the uneven number of Ram Slots being used or the different sizes, but there have been mixed opinions about it and i didnt find a single person who could say if thats good or bad.

Ram Slots being used or the different sizes,

The reality of this is it doesn't make much of a difference.

In your case, remove one of the odd sticks and see how the system behaves.

Also read up on BSOD DWM.exe, might be the video card as well (but let's hope not)

yeah i removed the 16GB, now running with 2x8Gb in Dual Channel only.

I have had random bsod's with a previous 2070 by Gigabyte about a year ago. (Sent it back because neither me nor nvidia support could get it to work)
Also my gtx960 did have issues as well, but i dont think i have the dumps anymore.

Most of them pointed at drivers tho.
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
and a couple of others.

Always thought it was my old system or a faulty graphicscard.

Ok, start with the RAM in dual channel, see how it behaves.

If it still misbehaves, then we will look into other options

Small update:

No issues for a few hours of playing now.

But the problems have been unpredictable ever since, so it doesn't really say anything.
I will test more...

For the RAM:
2x 16GB is probably better than using 4x8Gb right?
(Both costs about the same)
If it turns out that the irregularity is caused by the 3rd bar, i would need to purchase new RAM to get back to 32GB

I suppose using 2x16 abd 2x 8 together wont work either?

Seems to work fine.
Been using the pc for a few days with only the 2x 8Gb Bars.
I played through Ori and have had no crash since. And in 10 hours there would have been at least one crash.

Remains the question if it is the asymmetrie of 3 bars or a faulty 16Gb bar.

Any idea how to proceed?
Purchase a single 16GB bar?

Can i use all 4 along?

Also gonna return the PSU.

Put the single stick in, test with either your normal use of the PC, or memtest86.

After we determine he health of the stick, we can proceed further.
