In this case, probably, in general not really. But honestly just a plain Windows 10 install will very soon require more than 4+ gb when you're doing basic work, so it's much better to have 12gb of "slower" memory (which actually is not slower than now, since they will anyway be one-channel).

[This is not for laptops] Having identical sizes is not a necessity tho. If the motherboard is "smart enough" also depending on the CPU etc, the first 4gb of the 8gb stick will be in dual-channel speed and the remaining 4gb will run slower (flex mode on Intel: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005657/boards-and-kits.html?wapkw=flex+mode#flex)

Yeah, but he's on a laptop, guess how muck work Asus bother to put into the BIOS of most devices 😁

Hi there,

Forgive me if this is a repeated question but I've not found any threads that's answers exactly what I am looking for.

By any chance does any one happen to know if the ASUS UX303UB Ultrabook is capable of running 4GB (soldered on) + 8 GB Ram in dual channel mode (or rather Intels calls it Flex Mode)?

I've looked it up on their website and other sites to find out more but all I was able to get is that the laptop supports 12GB Ram in total. It does not state

whether or not it runs them in single or dual channel mode. I'm currently running on 8GB (4GB soldered, 4GB in a replaceable slot)

All quoted lol "There are chips which are 4GB and 8GB, in dual channel mode this will not work. But you would still get 12GB total only a little slower. Sometimes you will have to swap the RAM slots since the detection has bugs. For dual channel you can either use the 4GB RAM or the 8GB RAM but not both at the same time."

Good Luck! :)

My PC is a fast boyo:

6700K - 32GB - 1080 - 256GB EVO

^^You don't need more info than this right?^^

I think you'll never get a definitive answer unless you try to contact Asus support directly and even then.. good luck?

Memory channels depend on the motherboard and CPU configuration. The CPUs avaiable for that model for sure support dual-channel, but the motherboard is a different question. It's extremely likely that it does, since it's a standard since much before the 6xxx mobility series.

Also, what does it change if it isn't realistically?

I mean, I've read about the consequences of running in slower Single Channel mode but I've not researched enough to find out how much more will I be missing out on

Well if you have one stick now, you can't get slower than that already so if you add another, the worst that can happen is that you'll still be single channel.

Some programs react better with dual-channel memory, but not every application does.

I currently have 4GB soldered on the MB and a removable 4GB, so in total 8. Just unsure if its feasible to spend the extra cash removing the 4 and replacing it with an 8 to make it 12GB in total

Yes, you can. Since you already have a stick in it you can use CPU-Z under the "Memory" section to check if your memory is currently running in dual or single channel mode.

When you'll replace the stick, the memory channels will remain as they are now. So if you're running dual with 4+4, you'll run dual with 4+8 as memory channels are not limited by the memory you're using but only by the mobo + cpu traces.

If he puts in an 8 gig stock he will certainly be running single channel as dual channel requires equal capacity in both sticks
