Is a 500W PSU enough for a Ryzen 3700x and RX 580?

Duff_Nasty

So I bought a ryzen 7 3700x and an rx 580 8gb for a pc build.  I bought a 500w psu assuming that it would be plenty having seen an LTT video saying that really high wattage psu's are unnecessary.  Did I make a mistake in only getting a 500w?

Depends on the 500W.

Some have 500W on the +12V.  Some have as little as 300W.

What's the make and model?

EVGA 500W PSU

$300 for a CPU.  Almost $200 for a GPU.

...

$50 for a potato.

Ok thanks for the help!  I initially had a 5 3600 in mind and a lower card but I upgraded both without realizing that my power supply would need it as well.  Appreciate it!

What if I just go to a 750w?

More wattage doesn't make up for the fact that you bought a horrible PSU.  You can still get a horrible 750W.

What's your budget?

You can , but a decent 550w - 650w would be plenty.

ideally i'd prefer around $150.  I've been looking at the corsair rm750x but it's out of stock everywhere.

Around what price range is a good 550-650w?

Yeah that's the problem that I've been running into.  Is buying used a viable option?

It's out of stock on Corsair and Newegg.  I can find all of these used, and I've heard that buying a used PSU isn't a bad option.  Thoughts?

Wow!  That's a good budget.

Ok.  Wait 5 to 10 days?  (My guess is Newegg knows the container with the product in it is on the water):  https://www.newegg.com/corsair-rmx-series-rm650x-2018-cp-9020178-na-650w/p/N82E16817139232

That's unfortunately over my budget.  However, someone is selling a corsair rm750x for $100.

Whoa!  Not that reseller.  When I looked earlier Newegg had it listed for $139, but on back order for 5 to 10 days.

EDIT:  It's still there.  You have to select other purchase options.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but are you THE jonny guru?

You can't get better PSU advice if this is him.

This is what I do during coronavirus lock downs.

I was pretty active during the bird flu too.
