Hi there. I recently bought an Alienware 17 R2 (2015) second-hand because it had some gpu driver issues and I thought I could fix 'em. But unfortunately I can't do anything. In GPU-Z my gpu doesn't show any vbios nor any memory available for it. In device manager once I try update the drivers I get hit with an Microsoft Basic Display Adapter instead of my gtx 980m. I've tried old versions of the nvidia drivers but at no result (Nvidia GeForce driver can't find hardware or smth like that). I tried changing some .inf files of the drivers and they get installed, but once I reboot they are either gone, either in device manager it shows error 31 or 43. Flashing a new vbios doesn't seem to work as nvflash doesn't recognize and nvidia adapter. I tried the drivers from the alienware website but I get the exact same errors as the basic (not changed) drivers. Now I installed Linux Ubuntu hoping it was an windows error. Even with the latest Ubuntu drivers installed, the gpu isn't shown in settings (only the igpu), but if I run "sudo lshw -C display" in terminal it shows as a GM204M [GeForce GTX 980M]. Any advice/help would be much obliged!
