Just a quick question from a noob.

 

Just got the WD 1TB hard drive for a build that I'm doing for my friend and I notices that there is a place next to the SATA connector. It has 8 pins and it looks like something you would plug a fan connector in to. Sorry that I can't show you any pictures as i do not have a camera atm.

 

Here we go I found a pic on Google that will suffice.

The connector I'm taking about is circled if ya couldn't figure that out. So yea just wondering what that it cuz I was not expecting it.

AFAIK those pins are usually used for drive diagnostics, testing etc. by

the manufacturer, nothing to worry about for consumers.

They are jumpers for power testing etc.

I'm just posting this for future knowledge:

They are jumper pins used for the things people above mentioned.

However, in ye olden days, back when HDDs were 40GB big at most, they were aslo used to denote master-slave relationships between drives. What those are, I have no idea, but yeah.
