Deadkey input issue - keyboard or Windows?

I'm half-assuming this is a weird bug introduced by the latest Windows Update (cause that's when it started happening), but I can't find anything online about it so maybe it's a hardware issue?

Basically, I use the United Kingdom Extended (UKX) keyboard layout because I occasionally need to type German. UKX enables entering umlauted characters by pressing AltGr+2 as a deadkey and then the relevant vowel. This is obviously a lot more convenient than using the Alt codes.

However, since the latest Windows Update, this no longer seems to work for me when NumLock is active. (I know, right?) This presents a bit of a problem, because UKX does not contain a way to enter the one remaining German special character (ß) besides Alt+0223, and using Alt codes without NumLock on is never a good idea. So now I'm having to constantly deactivate and reactivate NumLock while typing German 🥴

So...what is this? Is there a faulty contact in my keyboard? Or is this genuinely just a bug that's crept into Windows somehow?

I'd really doubt it's your keyboard. If you want to be absolutely sure you can try live booting a Linux distro off of a USB drive, but your best bet would be asking on the Microsoft Forums, people there have forgotten more about Windows than most of us will ever know.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Good shout. Searching there actually did lead me to someone having a similar-but-different issue: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/united-kingdom-extended-keyboard-no-longer-adding/6b31eec3-d56e-4190-bc1b-f5cca2125361

However, while it's had a few upvotes, nobody seems to have replied to that thread (posted Feb 26), which isn't filling me with confidence about trying there 😂

Edit: Oh wait that's not 6 "upvotes", it's 6 views. Uff da :/
