Hi all!

I currently have:

- Core i7-7700k 4.2 GHz

- 16 GB DDR4 RAM 3000 MHz

If I were to upgrade I would change to

-Ryzen 7 3700x

-32 GB DDR4 RAM 3600 MHz

I would also change my storage, but may be doing that anyway.

I don't do a ton of multi-tasking on my computer, but I feel like I will start to because I am in software engineering and would like to try and start learning how to develop games (unreal engine mainly).

I was either thinking of upgrading this, or if this is good enough to last for a while longer, then I was going to upgrade some other components of my setup.

The other components I could upgrade if not this:

-Change from current 1080p 144hz monitor to 1440p 144hz monitor.

-Get Magni/Modi stack to use better headphones with PC/Console

-Possibly a new mouse. Thinking possibly the Logitech PowerPlay and G903.

Any thoughts on this? What would you do in this situation?

I would upgrade memory until you start running out. What GPU do you have? You won't get blown away in gaming. I would wait for Ryzen 4000 since you already have a capable system for now, but in productivity 3700X blows the 7700K out of the water.
Monitor upgrade would be pretty worthwhile, but I would reccomend a 2060 Super or better for 1440p 144hz. Great picks include 27GL850, VA27AQ, XF27HUA, PX7 Prime, 27GL83A.

As a wise master once said,

Put as much effort into your question as you would expect a stranger to add to their answer!

List the rest of your system specs and a budget. please

Sure thing! Budget is around 1000 USD.  I'll do a PCPartPicker List of my system.

I couldn't find the monitor on PCPartPicker so here is an amazon link:

Okay thanks for that recommendation. My GPU is a ASUS Strix Gtx 1080.

Nice Rig.

I'd look at 3700x or bigger and a decent X570 board of your choice. Nice set of DDR4 3600mhz (CL 16). Be a pretty considerable thread count up grade with a little IPC gains on top.

Thanks!

That's what I was leaning towards, but wasn't sure if I would see a substantial increase in performance.

What part are you saying no to? Upgrading right now in general, or a certain component?

If your computer is doing everything you need it to do, don't upgrade.

If your computer is NOT doing everything you need it to do, upgrade.

It's as simple as that.

I run a Lenovo thinkstation D30 as my main machine. I have used Altium Designer, Solidworks, 32 Chrome Tabs, Compiling a Python Script, and rendering a video in the backround all on a 9+ year old workstation with 184GB of RAM. It works perfectly fine, and I have no plans to upgrade in the future.

Until my computer starts to slow down, I will upgrade. In the meantime, an upgrade is a complete waste of money.

You know what... I think that you're right.

I think I may still get some more RAM because 16 GB hasn't really been enough lately, but the rest of my system is still fine currently.

Thank you for your suggestion, and allowing me to consider whether I truly needed, or just wanted,  to upgrade my system.

I'll probably spend that money on some other things in my setup that I actually need more than the components and save the rest

100% agree. A faster computer is only faster if you actually use it. Got a r7 1700 and i've been itching to upgrade but man I really still don't use this cpu anywhere near as much as I should.
