Hi, newcomer to the forum and first post so please bear with me ?

I've bought 2x 4GB memory modules from Kingston HyperX DDR3-1866 (933 MHz) PC3-14900, the sticker (for what it's worth) describes them as HX318C10F/4 (4GB DDR3-1866 933 MHz CL 10 from Kingston data sheet), the PCB is black (some fake "rebadged" RAM normally have green PCB that they glue a different heatsink), the system RAM is currently running stable (until now at least ) at 850Mhz CL 9 at 1.5v (regular module voltage) and still, the numbers don't add up...

CPU-Z memory window

Spoiler

232627330_CPU-zMemory.PNG.64ba6b9ed9498d658b6857032f9d99fb.PNG

The issue is that the SPD data does not correlate with the memory description.

  • CPU-Z SPD information says that Max Bandwidth is PC3-14200 (889 Mhz) but the highest JEDEC is #4 and the Frequency is just 685 MHz with CL 9;
  • Aida64 says the same about the JEDEC memory frequency and timings but tells me that the Memory Speed is DDR3-1800 (900 Mhz);
  • RAMMon says that the Memory Speed is DDR3-1777 (889 Mhz) PC3-14200;

What specs are these modules?

BTW my heatsink is red.

Other weird thing is that i check the memory's serial number online (9905471-006.A00LF) and i cant find nothing on Kingston site and there are 2 sites that say that the serial number is for a Kingston module but DDR3-1333 (666 Mhz) PC-10600...

I would see if i'm doing something wrong here before i start a complaint on Ebay, so...

Where is the DDR3-1866 (933 MHz) PC3-14900 specs that is on the sticker?

Is the SPD incomplete/corrupted or it content is not being correctly interpreted by the different software?

Are these "good quality" fake modules?

What specs are these modules?

What gives!? ?

The memory speed can vary and still be DDR3. For example there’s DDR4 2400 RAM & DDR4 4000 RAM. But they’re both DDR4 RAM. Your RAM looks real to me.

I understand but what droves me off is that i have 2 other Kingston HyperX DDR3-1866 (933 MHz) PC3-14900 modules (with blue heatsink) and the SPD information it correct on Aida64

It could just be a different variety or model. IF I were you I’d do a benchmark with userbenchmark and see how your RAM performs with other people’s RAM of the same type.

I actually checked 8 ddr3 Kingston HyperX modules, all of them have the correct (xmp) timings in accordance to their sticker on the heatsink, their colour varies; got black, red and grey. I've also had blue a while back.

I consider it possible that someone just used the heatspreader on a standard Kingston-dimm. If so, I'd expect a separate sticker under the heatsink on the dimm/ram-chips itself.

I'm aware of that heatspreader scam but usually the PCB is green since is the cheapest PCB to make. I cant remove the heatspreader easily, its well glued in and i'm afraid to damage the RAM.

All things considering, if it was fake 685 MHz CL 9 rebadge RAM running at 850Mhz CL 9 at stock voltage, that would be some high quality RAM to begin with!

Yes it is, when it is true that it does run flawlessly. Hence, the original 1866 would start at 10-11-10 at 933... The 850mhz is also confusing AIDA, RAMMon and CPU-Z when they try to give you information on your memory-bandwidth.

About that green pcb - no worry, the red&grey ones here do also have a green pcb.

OK, Step 1, you linked in a bunch of good information, but non of it really meaningful without something to compare with.

Now, step 2. Find the memory kits at the manufacturer's web site, and compare them to your links.

https://www.kingston.com/us/memory?memorytype=Memory for Servers, Desktops, and Laptops

I'd do this, but I'm too lazy atm. hf
