I've got a Gigabyte Low Profile GTX1050ti OC edition. The fan recently kicked the bucket (sounded like a bad bearing before death). A replacement fan is ~$15 USD. Personally I find this a bit high for such a small fan and I've always wanted to upgrade the little fan it came with anyway. The fan is a 3 pin pwm fan with a strange small connector I've never seen before. Since I don't think the GPU can power a larger fan I was wondering if it is possible to rig a larger 3 pin fan to use power from the power supply and use the PWM signal from my graphics card. Is this even possible. I don't care if it looks ugly since its an optiplex upgrade so no one will ever see it anyway. I am proficient in soldering and splicing wires is a piece of cake. This is my first post here but I believe it may be my best shot. Currently I have a temporary solution of using an ATI two pin fan that just so happened to fit but it runs really loud.

Update 1: I wired a fan that is literally double the width of the card up and it looks horrendous but whatever.

Update 2: my graphics card doesn't agree with the pwm on this fan and is even louder than my previous "solution"

Short answer yes if you have the right pins to connect to.  If you look up the specs for the PCB on the 3 pin you could likely just rewire a 120mm fan etc like you are talking about.

Long time ago I had gtx970 from gainward, horrible little fans which didn’t cool gpu at all, so I strip down the card from shroud and fans, and strapped two 120mm fans to heatsink, it wasn’t prettiest but worked amazing, droped over 20c. Both of the fans I connected to mobo and setup fan curve which was quite low because of two quite massive fans.

So if I just wire the fan completely to the GPU is the fact that it draws 2 times more power at 5watts instead of 2 a reason to be concerned?

If you want to do it properly just buy the adapter ?

1. part of the fun of this project is doing it with whatever I have around.

2. I would just buy a new fan it's not really a saving of $15.

also update. I wired a fan that is double the width of the card up and it spins but it doesn't have any control. It is also the most janky/cursed cooling solution to ever exist on gods green earth.
