Hello everyone! I would like to preface this by saying that I have limited experience with servers, but I DO have my own rack with a couple old Poweredge R420's which have served me well. My objective in this is to replace the various desktops within my home with a single server containing 2 or 4 Xeon CPU's with all the dedicated GPU's from throughout my machines  (kind of like what Linus has done recently with his and his wife's machine and his VR build) I have sorted out what chassis I will use but I am stuck on motherboard and CPU's. I am open to using used hardware, mainly I want each CPU to cost less than ~$150 each and the total machine to have 24+ cores for all my VM's. I want similar single-thread performance to my i7-8700 (In my main gaming rig) Also, I am looking for an OS to manage VM's with and I have semi-decided on UNraid, although I am open to suggestions if anyone has objections (It must have GPU passthrough, obv) Thanks!

I think a good bet might be a high clock-speed X79 Xeon, like from Linus's recent video. Lots of decommissioned server boards and CPUs on that platform

The Daily Driver:
AMD Ryzen 7 3700x  |  EVGA GTX 1070 SC  |  48GB Crucial Ballistix Elite DDR4-3600  | Corsair 750D Case
AsRock X570 Pro 4 mobo

iRacing Sim Rig:

i5-10600k @ 5.0 GHz  |  EVGA GTX 1080ti Hybrid  | 32GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600  |  Corsair Air 540 Case
ASUS Z490-E ROG Strix mobo
