Computer Crashed at Windows boot screen

Jordan Dalby

Hi, (sorry if this is the wrong section)

My specs are as follows

Windows 10 Pro

16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB 3600MHz

Ryzen 5 2600X

B450 Tomahawk motherboard

Vega 56 8GB

128GB Kingston SSD (where windows is installed)

1TB WDC HDD

As the title says, windows crashes at the screen attached.

What I have tried:

Reinstalling windows to make sure there were no other conflicting drivers (the option to remove everything)

Using a different motherboard (Gigabyte B450M)

Enabling and disabling XMP

Removing one stick of RAM

The trouble is, when I use my old graphics card (GTX 970) the computer comes on perfectly fine.

Then when I switch back to the Vega 56 it just doesn't work.

I've tried putting the Vega 56 in another computer and it works perfectly fine.

I've tested everything and done basically everything I can.

I've installed the drivers for the Vega 56 on the official website and also with the autodetect utility.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks.

No issue there then...The Vega is dual Pin, just to rule out another oddball thing, are you running a splitter or separate cables from the supply since the vega is dual and the 970 is single?  If you havent ran dedicated cables yet, maybe try that as a first things first? I had issues with a 850 TT Toughpower supply on my 1080ti using a splitter

EDIT:  Sorry, IDK what i was thinking, i forgot the 970 was dual as well.  Either way, if a splitter is involved i would still try dedicated.

I'm using 2 6+2's on the same cable, should I try two separate 6+2's?

Not to say that would fix your issue, but it could eliminate one possibility.  I would run on from VGA1 and another separately from VGA2 just to rule it out with the TDP higher on the Vega

Not sure what you're referring to.

Ah okay.

This has worked! Windows now boots and I am on the desktop.

I'm having another issue though if you're willing to help.

When going to device manager, it shows Microsoft Display Device (or something like that) instead of RX Vega like it should.

I've installed the drivers though, any ideas?

Awesome! Um i would say maybe since you were hotswapping GPU's to maybe delete the nvidia drivers and do another fresh driver install for the vega.  Maybe use DDU (display driver uninstaller) if you want to super clean the drivers.  At least that's where I would start. Albeit, I'm not overly familiar with AMD GPU's

When doing the fresh Windows installation it should've cleared my driver's but I suppose I could try that

i didnt realize you were fresh on windows, i thought you were actually using the 970. If i were you I would start there still, gpu drivers can be finicky at times

EDIT:  if this is a conflict i would go the DDU route.  It just generally wipes issues like this alot better
