long story short, my bitcoin wallet has become corrupted somehow. what is the processes in which I can get a wallet program running again and salvage my bitcoins?

attached is one of error messages I received when I tried to let it fix itself by catching up with the block chain.

It seems like a error of bitcoin-qt. And fixing a corrupted wallet will be very hard if not impossible.

Hopefully this has prompted you to create multiple secure backups ;) consider storing some of your coins on paper wallets. (Wallet.dat holds your private keys, if it's not encrypted adequately anyone who gets it can use your coins)

Luckily this time around, the fix was as easy as backing up/moving the wallet.dat and re-downloading the blockchain.

Looking closer at the error, you might have been able to fix it by simply restarting your computer. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with that file, it's just in use by another program so BitcoinQT is unable to fully launch. Could have been an earlier copy of BitcoinQT didn't close properly, or was still open and running in the background.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Users cannot, and will not securely manage key material. Most users can't and the ones that can, wont.

Ask me about Bitcoin, Litecoin, Crypto-Currencies, and/or Mining them.
