Upgrades for 4K Gaming

Go to solution Solved by Jurrunio,

graphics card upgrade will do, though most likely not the 1080. 2060S, 2070S, 5700, 5700XT are better options new, 1070ti better option used.

Current build:

CPU: i5-6600k 3.5-3.9GHz

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB ROG STRIX

RAM: 16GB

Motherboard: ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2, 80+ GOLD 550W

Question:

I'm contemplating the upgrade of my current PC for 4K gaming and potentially VR. Would I get away with just upgrading the graphics card to GTX 1080 or would I be better off doing a larger upgrade (e.g. new CPU, Motherboard and a newer graphics card) ?

Thanks! Would you recommend the 5700XT over the RTX 2070?

No, not at 4K. the 2060S is a strong competitor for the 2070 though, with only a 5.5% cut down in compute units

btw dont expect more than high settings on these cards for 4K 60fps

What is your current monitor ? Also why the need for 4K ? I would rather have a 1440p monitor and play at higher settings than go with a 4K and reduce settings down to high/med etc. Kind of defeats the object of going 4K in the first place.

I’m using a 60Hz 1080p monitor.

If I’m being honest; I’ve been contemplating going ultrawide for productivity. That said, image quality is my main concern.

At the moment, I just want to get a feel for what hardware I’d need and how much I would need to spend.
