Upgrades for 4K Gaming

graphics card upgrade will do, though most likely not the 1080. 2060S, 2070S, 5700, 5700XT are better options new, 1070ti better option used.

Current build:

CPU: i5-6600k 3.5-3.9GHz 

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB ROG STRIX

RAM: 16GB 

Motherboard: ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming 

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2, 80+ GOLD 550W

 

Question:

I'm contemplating the upgrade of my current PC for 4K gaming and potentially VR. Would I get away with just upgrading the graphics card to GTX 1080 or would I be better off doing a larger upgrade (e.g. new CPU, Motherboard and a newer graphics card) ?

Cinebench R15 Single thread:168 Multi-thread: 833 

SuperPi (v1.5 from Techpowerup, PI value output) 16K: 0.100s 1M: 8.255s 32M: 7m 45.93s

No, not at 4K. the 2060S is a strong competitor for the 2070 though, with only a 5.5% cut down in compute units

 

btw dont expect more than high settings on these cards for 4K 60fps

I’m using a 60Hz 1080p monitor.

 

If I’m being honest; I’ve been contemplating going ultrawide for productivity. That said, image quality is my main concern. 
 

At the moment, I just want to get a feel for what hardware I’d need and how much I would need to spend.
