Good used servers + fun things to do with them?

Looking to get a used server for around 200-300 dollars USD. What would some good options be? It will serve as a render server for a little while but after I don't know what I'll do with it. Ideas?

Setup VMs and experiment with different OSes. Setup a NAS. Host a Plex or file service like NextCloud, host a website, host a gaming server. The sky is the limit. Unless you pierce the sky and destroy the earth. But like... don't do that.

If you run a VM on a server are you able to control it from my main PC?

Yep. That is how I control all of my VMs. You can do it in a  web browser with most hypervisors.
