Hey guys, I got word from a friend of mine that he was having issues he didn't know how to solve, so in an effort to aid him i've created this post, and want to thank all who see this for your time and help.

Simply put from his explanation, the PC that was performing great no longer boots. He explains that he used to use it a lot, multiple hours a day, nearly every day in the week and then that suddenly stopped due to work. As he puts it, throughout the past 3-4 months, the pc has gotten near no use, and when he tried to use it again, it wouldnt work.

The pc in question is a prebuilt from HP. The model is Hp omen 870-011ng. Unfortunately the only versions ive found online are in german but here is the amazon link anyway:

https://www.amazon.de/OMEN-870-011ng-i7-6700K-Geforce-Windows/dp/B01NBU75GF

The pc has an i7-6700k, a gtx 1070, 16gb of ram, and what appears to be a custom hp motherboard.

He has tried all the connectors and cables to make sure everything is still plugged in. He has done the mandatory "swap plugs," concerning everything from the hdmi cable used, to the power plug. I recommended he remove and re-insert both the ram, ssd, and hdd, but no fix was found there. He thought it might be gpu related, but even with the hdmi cable plugged into the motherboard directly, nothing changed.

I appreciate any and all help you can provide!

Hi,
does the PC do anything before switching off after pressing the power button? Any fans start spinning, any lights, any output on the screen?

It might not be related to the problem directly, but was the PC plugged in during the time it was not used? If not, the CMOS battery might be dead. If you have a multimeter, you can simply measure its voltage or just try swapping it out if you have a spare one lying around.

This is a good question OP, although I'm not sure that a dead CMOS battery would prevent a system from booting. It would just reset the BIOS settings to default. Most systems will tell you if the CMOS battery is missing.

OP, what does the computer do when you push the power button? Any information can help.

Yes, I only mentioned it for the sake of completeness, it falls more into the category of possible side effects.

I beg to differ some laptops refuse all together to boot unless there is a well charged cmos. so yes I would recommend replacing it OP

Not criticizing your suggestion as you could be correct that it might be dead. Just trying to help OP and his friend get things working quickly. No offense intended @greenhorn ?

Alright, after more clarification of the issue, I can no longer class this as a "wont boot" issue. Ill explain now. According to my friend once the power button is hit everything starts working correctly. The gpu fans, and all case fans start spinning, all lighting from the pc turns on, the keyboard, monitor, and mouse all light up as you'd expect. But after a couple of seconds of trying to connect, the mouse, keyboard, and monitor (and only these 3), all stop functioning (for the monitor both the gpu and the intel graphics were tested with same result as mentioned before), but the rest of the pc is on and appears to be functioning despite not being able use the aforementioned features and therefore the pc as a whole

When you say that you tested the integrated graphics, did you remove the GPU from the computer before testing it? Many motherboards will not use the integrated graphics when a dedicated GPU is connected.

Just checked with him, it was tested with both the gpu attached and completely removed

Interesting, are you certain that the computer is actually powering on? I have had computers power on all the fans and LEDs without actually booting into the operating system.

Can you even get the computer to POST? I am not entirely clear on whether he ever gets the computer to display anything at all. If he can get into the BIOS, then the issue is most likely an issue with the bootloader or the operating system itself. Perhaps he can try booting to a recovery USB or USB version of Ubuntu?

Nothing displays at all apparently. The monitor lights up for a few seconds, tries to connect, and immediately then goes black

Sounds like it is getting the signal to wake up the monitor but it never gets to the point where the system can display anything. It does not sound like the system is even able to POST. You can have your friend try removing the CMOS battery from the motherboard and then reinstalling it after a minute. This will reset the BIOS to the default settings. This can sometimes help systems that will not POST.

He attempted it and nothing changed at all
