rendering is certainly better on the quad core. As for gaming, some wont even start on 2 thread CPUs like the Core 2 Duo and it's not like 3Ghz is much better than 2.66 in games that only uses 1 core.

I was wondering if an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz is faster than a     
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz? The duo has only 2 cores but is 3.0 GHz. I don't really know much about CPU's.

E8400 is faster on single core speed, but slower in multicore speed.

Chances are the quad core is better for gaming since most modern games can use multiple cores. What games specifically do you play with this system?

well overall the core 2 quad is better as you can still game on it fine and it is better for rendering. Some games don't run well on a dual core. GTA V would 'RUN' on my core 2 duo e8400 but it had lots of texture loading issues etc whereas a quad core doesn't really have those problems. A quad core will be able to render videos faster aswell.

the Q9400 is a better choice, the E8400 will have unplayable stuttering on most games.

The specific games are good to know, and how old they may be. 2D games likely care very little about 4 cores but again, that depends.

Plan on playing overwatch once I get a better gpu, I play AQW/ourWorld for 2D games, and then AQ3D, WoW, Heros of the Storm, and Warframe (3D games)

Fairly modern so the quad core is for sure your best bet. Although don't expect much, it'll do all it can which isn't a ton.

WoW for sure is one of the most CPU demanding games out there, despite common belief.

 

Minimum frame rate/raid frame rate will depend greatly on single core performance.
