Laptop OS change

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

As far as I know Windows 7 does not load as many drivers automatically, so you would probably have to install some manually. But it has been years since I last used Windows 7.

By the way, with the support ending in january of 2020, I would not recommend switching to Windows 7 now.

So i want to change the OS of my laptop which has Windows 8.1 on it to Windows 10, but how do i get like the chipset drivers and such when the drivers on the website are only for windows 8.1.

I dont care about the touchpad drivers and more just the drivers to use it as a normal pc because the screen is broken and i have it hooked up to a tv.

Thx for helping.

Windows 10 has a lot of drivers out of the box. Unless you have very rare hardware, you should be fine by just installing Windows 10 and updating it. It should load all the drivers automatically.

oh ok thx, but how does it look if i want to install windows 7? Just asking out of curiosity :).

You should be able to install the Windows 8.1 drivers on Windows 10. I never trust Windows 10 to actually install the most updated drivers so I always install them myself. Often times Windows 10 installs graphics drivers that are 1 to 3 major versions behind. As for Windows 7, ensure that your laptop supports it first before attempting to install. Load up a good anti-virus (Bitdefender, Kaspersky, etc.) and you'll be find after support ends in 2020 (assuming they don't extend support again). Even after Windows 7 support ends, you can load up a VM on Ubuntu or W10 to browse the web with and still have security updates. Do I recommend W7? Eh, yes and no. I personally cant stand Windows 10 and don't plan on changing soon. If you're willing to have a little extra hassle after W7 support ends, by all means use it. If you don't want the trouble, load Windows 10.
