MacOS: Using a Number Pad for macros

I just got a basic USB Number Pad off amazon.  I plan on using it for macros and hot keys in various different programs.

My current plan is that I'll likely use ControllerMate .

 

My question is: Is there a better way/choice to go? Has anyone done this before? 

 

(secondary question, has anyone figured out how to get the num lock toggle on keypads/win keyboards to work on the mac?)
