Minimum power supply required?

Go to solution Solved by madknight3,

Thanks everyone. On the PSU it said Max Wattage: 450 and Peak Wattage: 500. It was an 80+ bronze as well. The installation went well and everything seems fine.

I'm going to be heading over to a friends and seeing if I can install my old video card in his system. I just upgraded to a 770 and have no use for my MSI 560 Ti Hawk that's a couple years old. Since his system came with a GT 520, and he's not in a place to get something new for himself, I figured I'd just give him my card in the mean time. Should be a little upgrade for him.

He's not a tech savvy guy so the only specs I could get him to find out about his computer (pre-built I assume) before going and checking it out myself are:

  1. Intel Core i7-2600
  2. GT 520
  3. 8 GB Ram (not sure the kind or brand)
  4. 2 TB HDD (again, not sure the kind or brand)

I'm not sure what brand his power supply is, how many watts it has, or if it has the two 6 pin connectors required for the 560 Ti. I'm not expecting any more than the bare minimum power supply required to run the system so it probably wont be enough, but we'll see.

What would be the lowest wattage power supply I should attempt to install the card in if it has the connectors? If it doesn't have the proper 6 pin connectors but still has enough watts, should I use the 2 external power cables included?

You should be fine with a 500W. Heck, maybe even a 450W.

Suggest a Corsair. 5 year warranty. I had a 520W for 2 years, I spilled water into it, mailed it to them, and they gave me a 650W because the 520 was out of production. I so love Corsair.

You'll be perfectly fine with a 400w or bigger.
