First new build in 7 years!

Hey all,

I am a newbie here but have been building rigs for over 15 years (took a hiatus due to having to be an adult and save money) but now I am getting back into PC gaming. I am in British Columbia, Canada and have put together a selection of mid to high end parts for my new build in the next couple weeks. For years I have been an AMD guy due to pricing but I am planning on an Intel/Nvidia rig since they seem to have the best performance in the price range I am looking at. That being said, I would love to read your thoughts and ideas as to AMD's Ryzen offerings and the possible use of Crossfire to make up the performace difference with NVidia's newest cards thanks in advance!

1. Budget & Location

British Columbia, Canada, $2500 Canadian maximum including shipping and 12% sales tax. I have used Amazon for my pricing because free Prime shipping seems to make up for the price differences+shipping from ordering at several different suppliers. I miss NCIX :(

2. Aim

I am a Bioware fan and am looking for something to replace Destiny 2 so I am hoping Anthem lives up to it's hype (but, y'know, EA). I don't do a lot of productivity on my home computer so this is primarily for high graphic gaming. I may do some occasional photoshop or video editing but that is a rare occurrence. I have overclocked in the past and in the future may try to squeeze a bit more out of this machine as I will probably not upgrade for 4 to 5 years.

3. Monitors

I will be playing at 1080P 60HZ monitor (ASUS VZ279H) at first but plant to end up at 1440P 144hz gaming monitor in a few months so I would like it to be able to play on high or better graphics. If the build includes a monitor that's 27 inches that's great but I am more focused on power than the monitor right now. The Asus would a second monitor to have videos, IM, browser, etc running next to my future monitor.

4. Peripherals

The only peripheral that I will need is a nice set of headphones with a mic, preferably sub $150. I'll be buying as part of my budget Windows 10 Pro on a USB but already have a mouse (Logitech G400s and Razer Naga depending on what I am playing), keyboard (Corsair K90), and monitor (ASUS VZ279H). I also have a case (Antec P280) which doesn't really allow for RGB so I am not really interested in that and a 650watt power supply (I could upgrade that if budget allows just to get something newer and maybe 80+gold or higher). I also am bound to WiFi at the moment and would like it built in to the motherboard unless there is a much better alternative.

5. Why are you upgrading?

I made a compromise with myself in university to not build another gaming rig until I could save for it and to play consoles until then. My PS4 is showing it's age and now is the time to rejoin the PC Master Race.

Get an RTX 2060 or 2080 instead. The 2070 is poor value.

Thanks for your thoughts. I found that the 2070 was performing similarly to a 1080 and the extra $400 of the 2080 rocks my budget.

Not really, new Intel CPUs are just... the same, there is little performance increase since 6th gen

And RTX.... what to say, right now there is no real use for "ray tracing" and "tensor cores" except in very specific demos and rendering programs, but if you wanted to do rendering you'd just go for a quadro, not to mention the price which is kind of ridiculous for a card that ONLY has 10% more gaming performance over a 1080Ti, I'd expect like a 50% increase for that price...

Intel motherboards will become obsolete by the end of this year probably due to a new firmware lock being released by Intel to prevent new CPUs from working in older boards.

Trying to avoid fanboyism so I must say Vega from AMD isn't great... you should get a 1080Ti or maybe a Titan if you're willing to spend that much.

I had the i5 8600k and switched to the R7 1700 and in gaming the performance -at 1440p 85hz- is very if not exactly similar since my framerate is locked and determined by the graphics card(s), I've got an X470 board from ASUS which, hopefully, will allow me to upgrade to the Ryzen 3000 series, that if there's a decent performance difference between my current Gen 1 chip and the new ones, I didn't found the 2nd gen to be really different to the first one so talking about price/performance it wasn't worth the price increase. I work with file compression and encrypting so the extra cores and threads are beneficial for me, also Ryzen chips use little power so the heat ouput isn't too big even at 100% I've never seen the temp go over 70°C, my previous 8600k used to instantly skyrocket to 95°C while compressing a batch of files.

SSD... I prefer Crucial myself, Samsungs have a bad reputation when it comes to random data loss or controller failures, I try to avoid it, still have my first 128GB Crucial M4 safe and sound since 2012, non-stop use, also, SATA, nVME for gaming? just no, there isn't a single game that needs that amount of bandwidth to work properly so IRL the performance is just the same as a regular SATA drive.

If you go for Ryzen you'll need faster RAM, 2933MHz or higher, performance increases when the memory speed is high.

In the same hypothetical scenario of a Ryzen the D15 will be super-overkill, I'd dare to say if your ambient temp is below 30C throughout the year then you'll be good with the stock heatsink.

Drop the 32Gb of RAM (not needed for gaming) and grab sketch windows for $15, and jump up to a 2080 or a used 1080 Ti off Ebay

Awesome feedback. After looking at the drives the Crucial MX500 is a much better bang for my buck! I have read and watched about the 1080 VS the 2070 and performance is almost the same. I have looked around online for deals on a 1080 or 1080ti and honestly can't find anything more than $50 cheaper than a 2070. For that price I would rather have the latest gen than last gen. I also tried a build with a 2080 and I ended up $260 over budget and had to give up processing power with a lower end AMD CPU.

Could you please elaborate on cheap Windows 10? I haven't found much online other than "old keys" and have gone down that path to much frustration in the past with Windows 7. Is there a better alternative that I am missing?

I also have put together an AMD variant which I have listed below to see what you all may think about that.

Here's my recommended setups

no rgb:

little rgb:

You can buy windows OEM key less than $10 from eBay, kingpin, and etc. As you purchase the key, they will send an email with product key in it. You will need a separate usb to boot and setup windows.
