Hello,

I just built a new computer (parts list in last paragraph), and I have noticed screeching beeps when there shoulden't be any. When the computer boots up (running Linux), it gives a single short beep, as it should to signal post. Then, after it passes GRUB, it begins booting Linux. There is a single long (and subjectively more warning-sounding) beep at this time, while the motherboard's splash screen returns. I thought that this was some secondary post beep or something weird like that -- meaning that it is best ignored. Just now, when I was using it and fully booted into the OS, the beep started and didn't stop until I turned the computer off. All of these beeps are very clearly from the motherboard speaker, or at least inside the case. I don't think that this is overheating as I just had a web browser + the OS open during this last incident, and I did some stress testing and gaming earlier, neither of which produced the beep.

What is going on? Is there something inside my computer that is broken?

The parts list is here, but, due to some trouble when ordering and building, the PSU is a Corsair TX650M from the early 2010s and the SSD is a slightly outdated crucial one of similar size. The PSU has been stable for years in a system of similar power consumption (AMD FX-8350 + GTX 770), and was pulled working from that system. Despite this, it sounded like a bad DAC when I heard it outside the case during assembly.

If your hearing a beep on Post then you have a little speaker that came with your case.  That speaker can be faked up.  Also does the beeping in OS come from your speakers or from the little speaker in the case ?  Also fill in your signature and make things easier for us to troubleshoot.  Disconnect the little speaker wire connected to mobo pin.  You will not hear no noise now.  Let us know what happens.

The little speaker didn't come with my case. I had to intentionally find one in another person's computer (that has been fine for years... so they don't need it. I did, to get it working in the first place). What do mean by "faked up"? The beeping comes from the motherboard speaker -- not the external ones. I know that removing the internal speaker will remove the noise, but I am worried that it is a warning of something more serious (ie. vrm overheating). The goal of this thread isn't to remove the noise, but to figure out the root cause.

You haven't said does the computer work normally in WIndows, are you having any issues besides the beeps ?

I am running Linux, as I said in my original post, and it works normally aside from the beeps.

Oh that's right, sorry about that.  So how does Linux run, are you having any anomalies or are things running good besides the beeps ?

It's an Arch Linux install, so there are bound to be some bugs to work out after getting it setup (it's a bit like build your own computer, software edition). It's impossible to know for sure if those bugs are software or hardware, but, so far all have been solvable with reasonable software solutions, so I doubt that whatever this issue is is software.

Not all Linux is like that, however. Debian is a very stable distribution. (I say this to not scare anyone away from Linux.)

So no crashes or corrupt looking screen or anything like that right ?  If the system is stable IMO there is nothing wrong.  To figure this out run a stress test or a benchmark or a stability test to put heavy full load on your computer and let it run for 1 hour.  If nothing happens and your OS is still up and running then you do not have hardware issues imo.

My only issue with that is that this beep sounds like a warning, and it's generally a good idea to take warnings seriously.

Usually on a computer if there's beeps going off then you won't even be able to boot into your Linux.  You being able to boot up into Linux and use it with no crash or freeze means you have no hardware issues, especially if you run a Linux stress test app and put the system on full load and see if it crashes or not.

8/10 times i have had beebing in my comp, the culprit has been (cpu) fan speed monitor. So try to check if it gives reasonable readings (not 0 rpm or 11 155678 rpm) and/or disable them.

the 2 other times it was due overheating, long beeb and my comp shut down. one of them was just false reading, and the another was wrongly assambled cooler thing.( when i opened my case, the cooler was on the floor of the case... what do you mean by "heatsink should not be fastened with rubberbands and cable ties"?) :)
