Headset problem

I have a corsair hs50 and the audio works fine when plugged into the front of the pc. When it comes to the actual microphone of the headset there is a problem. When I go to test my mic and try to talk out of it it picks up nothing. But if I have music or any other audio playing on my pc it picks it up clearly. I am not able to talk.
