I have built a nas in a Fujitsu P2560 case and using the orginal 250w power supply but have replaced it with a intel DQ45CB motherboard, a Intel xeon X3320, 8GB of DDR2 RAM and a 120GB ssd aswell as 4 4TB WD Reds.

I want to run Pi-hole it as a nas storage server aswell as be able to run a 2 or 3 vm's for Pi-hole and various other programs.

Does anyone have any recomendations on a NAS OS which i can run on it. I have tried FreeNas but it will only start once and then will go into error mode on reboot.

It also needs to be cheap (Less than £15) or free as I do not have much money to spend on the OS and got the drives for free.

Also does anyone have any recommendations for a case. It is a ATX power supply with a Micro ATX main board. Only needs to hold 4 3,5" drives and 1 2.5" and needs to be less than £50 (85 CAD, 65 USD)

Thanks for any answers provided.

Update: I have purchased a cheap case i got for £15 so am going to give it a try and send it back if it is no good:

You could try NAS4Free (seems to be called XigmaNAS now), run Native FreeBSD or Linux and manage ZFS through CLI, or give XPenology a try (this is the Synology OS/software used on Synology NAS's).

For the case Rosewill has some of the cheapest I know of that can hold more than 2 or 3 HDDs, Silverstone also has come nice small form factor NAS cases but they are a little more expenseive and the same goes for Norco.

Not sure it's been far too long, many years, since I've used it. Maybe try their forum if they have one?

Probably, if I were to buy them I'd do it through Amazon as they make the shipping and importing easy. I actually found them through searching for cases on amazon.

Edit:

I'm in NZ so I'm resigned to the fact I have to import/international ship anything even slightly non standard.

I've just found a case on promotion for £15. Its a BitFenix Nova computer case don't know if it is any good if not going to go with the rosewill and pay the £30.00 import. I am trying nas4free again now it looks ideal will update this thread once ive figured it out lol.

Do you have access to a Linux machine? Because you could try:

Quote

dd bs=4M if=/path/to/your.iso of={your usb in ‘/dev/’} status=progress && sync

You could also try Linux and install the software itself. Get a lightweight one (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-weight_Linux_distribution#Comparison).

Then install the necessary tools ⚒.
