So my cousin keeps talking about getting a gaming PC and we were talking numbers and I want to show him 3 possibilities price points wise.  The rough price points are 600, 800 and 1,000.

Specs across the board:

1x8GB DDR3 1600MHz Chip ~ 70

EVGA 500W 80+ PSU (Has 2 6+2 connectors and 40A on the 12V Rail) ~ 45

DVD-RW from Samsung ~ 20

Seagate 1TB 7200RPM HD ~ 65

Good: About 600

FX-6300 ~ 120

Asus M5A78L AM3+ Board ~ 50

Thermaltake Level 10 GT Mid Tower ~ 50

Gigabyte R9-270 ~ 180

Better: About 800

I5-4570 ~ 200

Asus H81M Board ~ 60

Corsair 230T Case ~ 70

Gigabyte GTX 760 4GB ~ 290

Best: About 1,000

I5-4670K ~ 230

MSI Z87 G41 Board ~ 110

Corsair 230T ~ 70

Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB ~ 370

Reasoning for 4GB cards is, well both cards can use more than 2GB (2.5-2.8 on the 760 and 2.8-3.2 on the 770), but it's for reassurance.  Yes I have explained it, but the fact is it's also for bragging rights.  I might grab a cheap Crucial or ADATA SSD for boot on the house ofc.  But he wants a flashy case, so I choice cases that are decent to work in but look kool.  He also prefers NVidia and right now it's tough to recommend an R9-280x for 420 with a 770 4GB which is more or less about on par is 50 bucks less.  Any thoughts?

The 770(and 760 of course) does not have a big enough bus to support 4GB anyway so it is really pointless. And when your budget is below 1k every dollar counts.

Take the $600 build.

Replace the CPU with an Athlon II X4 760K.

Replace the motherboard with a nice one. mATX boards on AM3+ are well, poopy.

Replace the video card with a GTX 760

And then, profit.

Not being able to utilize it well or not being able to use it at all. My point still remains that it is money that can be better spent elsewhere.

It can utilize up to about 2.8GB of ram for the 760 and 3.2ish for the 770 before it bottlenecks the bandwidth.  So it's not completely wasted.

Okay if you want to pay the extra for the memory that you won't be able to fully use do it because it is your money. Otherwise get a non 4GB and buy a 212 Evo for the money.

Problem is, since AMD boards don't have working temperature sensors, it's extremely hard to overclock and they measure differently as well and their voltage is insane.  I try to stick to Intel for OCing very simple and str8 forward.
