Good home server solution?

I'm looking for a home file server solution. I'm not fussed on media streaming etc. If you are going to recommend builds with Linux I would appreciate explaining how to do it fully as I have never used linux. Thanks in advance

If you don't want to fuss around with it, go with a Synology ds. Mine has been running for 122 days without rebooting!

I love Ubuntu. Very easy to use compared to other stuff like debian. Hope somebody tells you a good one.

There are literally an infinite number of options, so we're going to need some more information.

 

Like how much storage space, reliability, budget, etc.

Originally I was thinking 4x2tb in raid 10. I was thinking of nothing higher than £400

if you don't need the possibility to expand further than 4 slots, the ds414 would be suitable. If you want to be able to add bays to it (dx510) you should choose a ds412+ or ds1513+ depending on your needs

They're a bit on the expensive side.

Do you think building a dedicated small form factor PC would be a good choice when looking to spend less money?

I'm not too fussed It's mainly for my Family that use Laptops with low storage space. So as fast as a USB 2 memory pen would be would be ok But i doubt it would be that low even on the lowest of low.

then ds413 would be the right choice for you. I own the predecessor ds411j and it's great except I could use a little more speed
