Solid upgrade from a HyperX Cloud II headset?

I'm a complete pleb when it comes to audio but I've always wondered what I'm missing out on by just using a gaming headset? Is there a noticeable improvement going to a hardware sound cound or DAC plus a solid pair of headphones? My PC is mostly used for gaming.

 

Is there a clear upgrade path to what I have? Any suggestions would be great.
