Upgrade old Adroid 4.3 to something more 21st century
venomtail posted a topic in Phones and Tablets
Have a need to use a tablet again for content consumption. Great, got my old Z tablet that I haven't used in what feels like nearly 10 years. Problem is it's old, android 4.3 and I'm already having issues trying to update the device cause google play is too old to log into so it takes me to the browser but it asks for an update and boots me back to google play. Cycle repeats itself. So what's the best way to update the device? Xperia portals says 4.3's gonna be the best it can do. No idea how USB updating works so I downloaded some sort of root checker and its says my device is not rooted. What's the best, most importantly easiest way to update old tablet OS to something new and fresh, so that it's easy to use so I can give it to some tech illiterate people to watch movies on. I understand never OS might be slower but the software newer familiarity is worth it. -
Well, I'm looking for a phone not for right now, but idnk in like a year I want some specific features on my phone which I found mostly in this 2 phones if you find another one with the same I would appreciate it if you would send me. XPERIA 5 ll and ZENFONE 7 PRO were the closest to my needs after months of searching, but still not sure if they are really good enough for the price I say this because the Xperia has literally all I need but its a oled idnk if the screen still burns if kept on the same image for a really long time like movies with a logo or something and I'm not sure about the camera setup its triple 12mp it is sony but I really would like another opinion. The features I NEED to have: 802.11ac High Refresh Rate 90/+ Minimum Battery 4000 Mah Good / Great camera Quality Video and Photo Dolby Atmos SD expansion 512gb or + Bluetooth 5.0/5.1 Really want as well: I really would like 3.5 Jack cause im looking at gettings some "semi-audiophile" headphones for daily great/amazing music experience. Really want IP rating Add-Ons: NFC 4K 120fps video recording Android 11

I'm just wondering guys, have any of you ever had an Xperia Z3 Compact device along with phantom glass screen protector? Now those screen protectors are quite pricey, but have a reputation. I'm very careless phone user, I always do stuff while using phone, I always use it with single hand. Therefore I need small and durable device. I also hate protection cases, because they limit the accessibility of side buttons. Wouold you recommend Z3 to a user who above all, needs a durable phone?

Hi guys, I have previously discussed a problem I had been having with my phone. Since then I have already done a hard reset of it a couple of months ago but it has gotten worse anyway. Now I have reached a new low. Yesterday evening, my phone died (which is quite a common occurence when it has less than 95% battery) but when I hooked it up to power (I tried both battery bank and wall outlet), The notification LED would turn red (indicating it is charging) and normally this would be followed by the battery charging animation popping up on screen. Instead after a few seconds the LED blinked red again and turned off (generally this indicates a too low battery level). I first thought I had a wonky usb connection but after being hooked up to power for about an hour, it would catch itself and start charging normally. It worked fine from then onwards until today, when I came home again and it died on me, same thing. I have several ideas what could be wrong: software faults: My phone is fairly old, it might be that a new update over the weekend (I think there were several) bricked my phone. But that shouldn't affect the performance on that low a level, correct? It might crash my OS, but preventing it from charging? And unless it is a pretty dexterous virus, I think we can assume it must be hardware related. hardware faults: The battery has been getting worse and worse since about November last year, recently it has been dying on me after about 10-15min of watching Youtube from 100% charge. I tried a hard reset, but that did not fix anything so I assume the battery fault is hardware related, presumably age related. Maybe this is linked? But then, what can I do? The only other thing I can think of is that the backpanel has come off about a month ago (it shouldn't have on my phone) and maybe something has gotten onto the PCB and shortened something. But I can't really imagine that, it would only be dust or BluTack (which I used to "fix" the backpanel) Any suggestions? My aim is to literally get the phone through another 9-10 weeks, I will get a new phone then anyway. If that means I have to carry a battery bank everywhere I go, that's fine, I'm already used to that. I just need it to work. Thank You Edit: Due to my intention of buying a new phone in 2-2.5 months, replacing the battery is in fact more expensive, than the amount I would save by buying it in said amount of time.

Hello! one week ago, one day before a class trip, my phone just broke, without any optical marks, just a black/blank screen, but I know that it is still unlockable because I can feel the vibration when I'm drawing my lock pattern. I had the phone for 2 years now, and I'm really not in a great mood when I'm thinking about replacing or repairing it, because that's too expensive for me as a student. But that's not the real bad problem. I have a lot of photos I need to rescue, and although I have google photo sync on, it seems like it won't connect to my wifi, so that's not working, so no luck there. Today I'm back home, and I thought it would be pretty easy because the phone is unlockable. But sony f****d me there too, because you always have to change from "charging only" to "MTP Data Transfer" to transfer data or to rescue data with the Xperia Companion. And to enable MTP trough the computer with ADB, USB debugging needs to be turned on. As result, I have no clue how to access my data and would be really happy if anyone could help me out. ---- Phone Informations ---- Model: Sony Xperia Z3 (D6603) OS: Android 6 (Marshmallow) MTP not activated USB Debugging not activated If more is requested/needed ill add infos Leo

The year is 2013. Smartphones have become popular among the general public. Yasashii still has a regular phone. Time for change arrives. The Sony Xperia E appears on the market and quickly becomes a popular choice among those with a tight budget who just want a simple entry-level smartphone. Yasashii buys one. Yeah, I still can't live down how much of a bad decision that was. But then, why should it matter? After all, that was years ago. Those probably aren't even sold anymore, right? Wrong. A few days ago I noticed a big billboard with that phone being advertised as a great deal at my local tech store. You might be tempted if you want a cheap smartphone. Especially considering that for some crazy reason there are many positive reviews on the internet. People need to be warned. For the love of everything that is dear to you, don't buy this pota... ahem... phone. First Impressions It actually looks nice. It's not going to last long, though. That nice brushed aluminum accent around the camera is actually only glued on and will eventually fall out. What looks like a metal accent around the phone is actually sprayed plastic and will get scraped. The speaker hole on the back will almost instantly get filled with dust and lint. That matte finish on the back plate will get scratched. The Xperia logo will scrape off as it is just printed on. As for the home screen and interface, it may not feel as modern as it did in 2013 but still looks fairly presentable. The (Few) Advantages At first, it's a pleasing piece of tech to hold in one's hand. The curved back plate allows for a decent grip (but limits your choice of phone covers/protectors). Its small size makes it kinda cute and easy to fit into your pocket. It's also quite light. Most importantly, at around $100 (new), it's fairly cheap. You can also get the dual sim variant at a slightly higher price if you need that feature. There are also plenty of those on the used market available at lower prices depending on the condition. It may or may not be important to you but it's one of few phones that you can buy new that have a removable battery and support for full-sized sim cards (you can use micro sim with an adapter, of course) The battery life is quite decent. If you just use it as a phone to make calls and write messages, the battery should last you up to 1.5 weeks. The built in Sony music player offers decent playback quality and a user-friendly interface for free without any ads (which cannot be said about most of the "free" third-party music players available for Android) The Terrible Realization When you power on your phone for the first time, all may seem good and dandy. You go through the initial configuration and apps start updating. Suddenly, you get a huge slap on the face. "Low phone memory" appears in your notification tray. Better get used to that, buddy. You see, Sony somehow got a "great" idea on how to set up the partitions. You get a 748MB phone partition and a 2GB internal storage partition. All the system apps are installed on the phone partition and they grow in size considerably when updated. No, you can't move them. Other apps get installed on the phone partition by default. You can move some of them (not all, though) to internal memory but you can only do it post-installation so you have to make sure you have enough space on your phone partition just to install it. And no, you cannot move any apps to an external SD card. This is the result: you have to pick which system apps you actually need to use and only update those as updates for all of them won't fit even right after a factory reset. After that you will always have to worry about the size of the third-party apps and whether or not they can be moved to internal memory. The "low phone memory" will be a recurring problem which will put a serious damper on your overall experience. Performance Issues Alright, so you've been through a lengthy trial and error process and got all the stuff you need to fit. Congratulations, you can now use it one at a time only! This thing only has 512MB of RAM. Those nice, useful widgets also eat away quite a bit of it. OK, so I just get rid of them and then I can multi-task? Ha! No! It has a single-core 1GHz Snapdragon CPU and an Adreno 200 GPU. In theory, it should be enough to run some apps smoothly, especially at the (pathetic) 320x480 resolution. Unfortunately, the Sony-modified Android 4.1.1 is so poorly optimized that everything is laggy and painfully slow. Forget multitasking, you won't even be able to type a message comfortably! On top of that, the display has got to be the single worst display ever slapped onto a touchscreen device. The resolution, as mentioned above, is really tiny, and it shows. You can pretty much count all the pixels with a naked eye. Everything has ragged edges. Text looks terrible and unclear. The touchscreen is also derpy as all hell. Because it ends right on the very edge of the phone you will often accidentally click stuff just by holding it in your hand. Often, when you want to answer a call, the slider will be difficult to operate and it will take you several attempts to do the most basic thing you should be able to do with ease on a PHONE. While attempting to type a message a lot of frustration will inevitably ensue. You can be the world's fastest typist and still be very slow with this device, because if you don't want to send a garbled mess of a message to your recipient, you will have to click every letter carefully and slowly. Typing anything in a web browser or other hardware-intensive apps is even more of a pain. You have to wait several seconds for the keyboard to even appear and then another several seconds for the input to register. Cursing does ensue, especially if you're in a hurry. So yeah, any browser you use will be sluggish as hell. Your preferred GPS navigation app will sometimes take MINUTES to figure out the location and your route. Forget about playing games smoothly, especially 3D titles. Snake, Checkers and Solitaire are the only things you will be able to play with any level of success. Any games that require immediate and rapid input from you are near-impossible to play because of the lag. Poor Usability Ok, you could make the argument that you don't need any fancy features and just want to use it on a basic level as a phone. To that I will reply: Why do you want to buy a smartphone if you just need a basic phone? You could save a lot of money and frustration if you buy a simple standard phone. The battery life will probably be a lot better, too. But fine, what if you still want this thing for some reason? Well, it's a pain in the neck even when doing the most basic things. Answering the phone will be frustrating because the touchscreen is crappy and unresponsive. Typing messages will be frustrating because the keyboard is sluggish. Even when you just want to use it as a music player there are problems. You hook up the headphones, go to the music player and adjust the volume to your liking. You get interrupted by a hearing damage warning. Every time. Then you go downtown while listening to music and you realize it's too quiet even at maximum volume, so you install the SoundBoost app to get around the issue. You're now listening to music at volume high enough to hear it over the noise of your surroundings when suddenly you get a message. You read the message and resume the listening, but now you have to restart the soundbooster because it had stopped working. Every... Time... It offers no hands-free features that would allow you to use it safely in your car. You can't answer a call with a gesture. You can't answer with a single button, slider only. You can't set it to auto-answer without third-party apps that often don't work well (or at all) with it. You can't answer (or make) a call with voice control. Even if you answer a call while driving you then have to manually engage the speakerphone. It's so quiet that you won't hear it well over the engine noise and the microphone is so bad that you will have to shout for your recipient to be able to hear you. Oh yeah, and the camera is dudu so you won't be taking nice pictures with it either. Especially considering that if your hand isn't perfectly stable they will come out smudged. Conclusion The Sony Xperia E is the single most infuriating smartphone I've ever had a chance to use. It can't do the fancy stuff you're supposed to be able to do with a smartphone (and for which you're paying good money) at any level of comfort. It can't do the stuff that even the cheapest standard phones can do without infuriating the user. It's useless for everything. Even if you're willing to make some compromises, the horrible performance is bound to eventually bring your blood to a boil. You shouldn't buy it, Sony never should have manufactured it and retailers never should have sold it. In fact, it's such a piece of crap that I almost can't believe Sony had the audacity to release it and put their brand name on it. They should recall it and send everyone who bought one a hand-written apology and a teared-off fragment of what used to be the employment contract of the person who approved it. Personally, I'm in the process of figuring out what to do with my Xperia E now that I bought a different phone. I'm thinking steamroller or a semi. Maybe airgun. Firecrackers, perhaps? Whatever I decide to do, I definitely won't be selling it. I couldn't live with myself if I gave this thing to anyone and took money for it.

I have acquired an Anker PowerCore powerbank (20100 mAh, 4.8A,with PowerIQ & VoltageBoost) and I am unsure about one thing. Anker also sell a PowerCore+ version of this powerbank and on the web page for that product (Link) they note that it is not compatible with my phone (SONY Xperia XZ). I've done some research and from what I can gather, the incompatibility is that the PowerCore does not support Quick Charge 3.0. Does the standard PowerCore have the same incompatibility , and if so , does it prevent me from using it with my phone or other devices?

Hey boys and gals, So, I need a new phone and I've always loved the Z series, both for looks and features (even though they're dead now ), but I've never owned one. Don't get me wrong though, since a very close friend of mine had a Z that died from a seperated back and a Z1 which's screen self-destructed. So now, I have to choose between the z3+ and the z5. They have pretty much the same specs (which are pretty decent IMO), but the z5 has a better camera (by a very small margin), a fingerprint scanner, it's thinner and it's newer so it MIGHT have dev support for longer. I like both of the devices, though I'm scared of the Z3+ overheating and about the camera app crashing (both widely reported issues), buuut it is cheaper by 200bgn (100$) soo yeah, what is your opinion?

I'm trying to reinstall the default Sony tft back onto my Xperia SP but every time I flash the device, it fails at this stage. Any ideas on how to fix this? Flashing tfts on this phone used to be a breeze as this device has had multiple versions of CM in the past. I've installed all the necessary drivers for Flashtool including the one for the SP from the Flashtool folder. The phone turns on but gets stuck on the Sony logo and then shuts itself off. Greetings guys, i was just looking to get your opinion on the new xperia 1, I'm still using the ultra XA one, trynna upgrade and cant afford buying the wrong phone at moment. My needs are kinda just basic, taking high quality wide pics, social media apps, no games, a fair amount of music gallery and finally few pdf books for daily readings.

I've got a Sony Xperia L2 (Android 7.1). It loses audio sometimes, I can't hear anything from it. The only way to recover it is plugging a jack. This is making so many trouble for me I requested help from Sony, but, they couldn't help me. What I've done so far: • Factory reset x2 • System update • Jack input cleaning • Test on Safe Mode I don't know what else to do! Please

Hi, a few days ago my old Sony Xperia Z1 gave up . I think it is an issue with the battery. I was checking an replacement which would be budget solution which would cost up to around 300 euro. But i dont need the latest tech as i can work with i have available. But i have one big restriction and that would be it should not be bigger than the 4.6 inch. That is the old xperia was a little smaller whic was great ( i dont need a brick in my pants ). Are there any other choices i might have missed ? which are "recent" ? Thank in advance for any advice and help.

Hello LTT Community, It has been a year since my dad bought the Sony Xperia E5 phone. He only used it for calling and taking pictures. I've noticed something on the screen which has been growing and has, at least for now, stopped growing. It looks like a burn on a screen but my father never put the screen to a lighter, he isn't even a smoker. From the pictures linked below, could you tell me what is going on and is there a possibility to fix this issue. This is really, really strange. Thanks!

Hot on the heels of the Galaxy S9, Sony has launched their flagship for the first half of 2018, the XZ2. Main takeaway is the new design. Sony has ditched OmniBalance in favor of a new design emphasizing curves and glass. https://m.androidcentral.com/sony-xperia-xz2 The camera hardware has not improved much, but it is now tied deeper with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845's DSP, which should mean better post processing and the ability to shoot UHD HDR video and 960FPS at 1080p, one-upping the 960FPS/720p of its predecessors and Galaxy S9 https://m.androidcentral.com/sony-xperia-xz2 Possibly the weirdest (and also possibly the coolest depending on your tastes) feature is "Dynamic Vibration", which rumbles the phone according to the soundtrack it is playing, almost akin to the feeling of a DualShock rumbling according to in-game actions https://m.androidcentral.com/sony-xperia-xz2 It's not all ups and no downs though. Unlike the Galaxy S9, which proudly boasted of it keeping a headphone jack, Sony has done away with it, joining an increasing list of OEMs who refused to let Jack onto the board Overall, it's probably the most interesting Sony phone in years, but what do you think?

Hello, can somebody help me choose between those two phones? im a sony guy i've been looking to get xz premium for a while now, then razer phone came out i wanted it, but now i started to get confused again and can decide between them. Been to the shop touched both of them, razer phone minuses is camera and not so dim screen (as to my eye it was looking similar to galaxy s8 both were on maximum brightness) and no headphone jack // xz premium minuses is low sound on speakers, lower battery, and not high refresh rate screen plus lower battery capacity, seen video that xz premium with oreo update is similar to razer phone with nougat in terms of speed, so razer phone should be more faster after oreo update right? i've been strugling for a week now - can't decide which one (both have fingerprint sensors enabled since i live in europe)

I am planning to root my Sony Xperia Z5Compact since my warranty had ended two weeks ago but I've been trying to learn since how to do that but I'm currently unable to. I've downloaded the recent twrp recovery for my phone, unlocked my bootloader, downloaded the sony companion app and the adb software to my pc and tried to do it several times. I go into adb and reboot into bootloader and then attempt to flash recovery recovery.img but then the adb says <waiting any devices> and doesn't respond again. I unplug my phone and then reboot it normally to try it in a different usb port but always ended the same. I followed many videos on youtube but when they succeed something goes wrong and then I'm stuck again. And also does only flashing a custom rom give me root acces? I'll download magisk after I root my phone btw... Hope and believe that you guys be helpful about this

I've had this phone for about two weeks now and I've noticed I am unable to get reasonable mobile (data) signal anywhere (UK), ie I can't send/receive texts, phone calls and I can't use my mobile data in nearly half the places my previous phone was able to. This to me is appalling considering my s4 and my brothers Acatel has ten times the signal this phone has. Now I'm not whining about it but it's just annoying, and trying to `fix' it following the Sony support is like walking into a brick wall and then forgetting the wall is there and walking back into it. So I get to the point of my post, has anyone else experienced this, and is there a way to possibly fix it?

Hey Guys, I use a Xperia Z (yeah, a outdated phone) .I was getting low signal strength on my phone today. So I opened it and saw one WiFi antenna is sort of broken from the motherboard and hanging there. WiFi is working though.Any ghetto fix for this?

I have the option between getting the Xperia Z5 or the Nexus 6p but I don't know which one to get. What do you guys think? I really like differnt things about the sony phones but I know the 6P is a beast, so I'm not sure which to get.
