Hello LTT community. Recently I was able to score a bargain on an Asus Rampage II Extreme + i7 920 combo, and this gave me the idea of building a secondary gaming PC around it that I could put in the living room (sure this platform is outdated and not power efficient in the slightest but it can still pack a solid punch). Anyway, I found a 4x4GB 1333MHz DDR3 kit, but there seems to be what I assume is a memory channel issue: by installing the 4 modules in the recommended configuration (so slots A2, A1, B1, C1), the BIOS would only pick up 8GB, while in Windows it would state 16GB with 8GB usable. After this I tried multiple different memory configurations while also swapping the modules around and these were the results: A1, B1, C1 --> still 8GB detected A1, B1 --> 4GB detected A2, A1, B2, B1 --> doesn't POST B2, B1, C2, C1 --> detectes the full 16GB and everything works as it should I could just use it in the last configuration, but then it wouldn't take advantage of triple channel, and I probably wouldn't be able to upgrade to 24GB in the future if I wanted to. So now I'm asking you for help: is there something I can try to do or do I just have to rule this off as a dead memory channel? I've already updated the BIOS to the latest version, reseated the CPU and checked the socket but found no bent or broken pins. I've heard some people say that excessive CPU cooler mounting pressure could cause memory issues: while I don't think I overtightened the cooler's screws, is it worth it to look into this potential solution or is it unlikely? And if it ends up being an actual dead memory channel, in your experience, is it most likely to be the CPU or motherboard's fault? I'd hope for the former since I was thinking of selling it and swapping it for a 6 core down the line anyway. Tell me what you think about this, I'm open to suggestions.

memory loss x58 seems to be missing some memory
tatakios posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
I have a p6t deluxe v2 paired with a x5680 and my motherboard since the cpu change(i7-930-x5680) my motherboard can't access memory in the last 2 slots (c1-c2) I tried cpu-z it recognizes them fine, HWinfo seems to recognize them as well. I decided to resit the cpu and checked for bent pins and I haven't seen any. Is There anything I can do? -
Budget (including currency): 500-1000 USD (very flexible) Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Primary: Gaming (mostly single player offline RPGs like Elden Ring, Tomb Raider, Control, etc. some RTS and some flight sim), Secondary: light CAD, programming Other details: Hello, I have a "slightly" dated machine that I have used and upgraded for years. I think I'm at the end of its upgrade path, but i wanted to throw it up on the forum to see if anyone had some creative ideas for improvements before I bite the bullet and start from scratch. Partially I'm avoiding replacing it due to nostalgia, but, if I end building a whole new machine the budget will be higher than listed here. If i have to replace the motherboard and CPU, I'm considering that a full rebuild and if I do go that route I'll create a separate post. I'm comfortable modifying electronics down to the the component level if needed and if its worth the effort (id rather not re-flow BGAs but i can if i have too). I would like to stick to air cooling as much as possible. At this point I would normally just upgrade the GPU, but I don't think that's my bottleneck anymore. For example I can't boot age of empires 4 because I'm missing instruction sets on my CPU (not expecting to fix that one). Current hardware. Motherboard: ASUS X58 P6X58D-E CPU: Xeon x5675 (overclocked to 3.4ish GHz) these are ~$30-40 on eBay so i can break a few if needed. I also have the i7 950 it replaced around somewhere RAM: 24GB 3 channel DDR3 various manufacturers (over clocked) GPU: ASUS ROG GTX 1070 OC edition (then overclocked some more by me) Boot Drive: 1TB Samsung EVO 860 PSU: i have a 650W supply in the system, but i have access to a 850W Dark Power 12 if needed All of the overclocking is fairly light and I didn't push anything I thought might limit the lifespan of the part, but, at this point I'm not sure how much lifespan matters. Overall, the system is shockingly stable and runs a lot of relatively modern games fairly well at 2K@60Hz and medium to high graphics, but I'm starting to see the performance limits on some of the more demanding games Anyway, I'm interested to see what this community comes up with. Thanks in advance

So I'm looking at some X58 motherboards, and managed to find a decent deal on the Foxconn X58 Flaming Blade GTI. Now I know that X58 is a dead platform and that the CPUs are very power hungry and don't get a lot of work done in 2021 and that I should just go with a Ryzen system or whatever but I think it would be a fun project. So now the question: as far as I know, it was up to the board vendor to determine rather they wanted to support LGA 1366 Xeon processors like the X5690, but because Foxconn no longer makes motherboards I can't just go to the QVL and see if it's compatible. Does anyone know if the X5690 is compatible? And if it is, I'm 90% sure it's overclockable, but just to make sure, does anyone havea 100% on that? And side question, would the X5690 and 12GB of 1600MHz DDR3 bottleneck a Vega 64 too badly?

hey everyone, im currently trying to troubleshoot an ecs x58b-a motherboard(pictured below) with an i7 920 the problem is, that no matter what i try, the only memory slots that work are the yellow ones(meaning that if i insert ram in one of the orange ones, the system infinitely bootloops) has anyone of you come across this problem before? and if yes, did you manage to find a fix?

My Intel Dx58so bios won't save settings
Harman1390 posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
So I recently wanted to install Mac OS on my system so I decided to reset my bios by letting it go back to defaults, had pretty decent overclocks for the ram and cpu, after that I can't seem to get the bios to save any settings, it either says there was a problem with the bios or just boots into windows with no effects, I have checked my jumper wires and replaced the CMOS battery -
Will xeon x5560 works on Asus P6T SE ? Because i didn't find it on P6T SE supported cpu list, also wether the latest BIOS will support the same CPU ?

Budget (including currency): $400 Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: General visual workstation and light gaming Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I'm looking to find out whether or not X5690 is compatible with X58 chipset. I'm trying to upgrade a 10+ year old Alienware Area 51 into something that would still be a fairly powerful workstation my today's standards. An HTML doc is attached outlining my current plans for upgrade under $400 Computer Upgrades.html

I purchased a couple of new hard drives. I flashed to the latest version of the BIOS to 0803 for this mobo from 0303 but the BIOS settings are essentially night and day difference. Loading defaults results in my PC not being bootable. I also have custom RAM settings in the original bios which I tried to change with no difference. I tried contacting Asus support but they remained silent. There's no documentation online whatsoever. The online (and electronic manual) still shows the original BIOS settings not the new one. I tried searching online with no success on what each of the [new] settings do which are not obvious (to me). I'm choked how Asus can offer BIOS updates without documentation to follow.

What has your experience been? Past or present, I figure we could use a thread here to discuss these salvage boards. I have built 3 systems using x99 boards with Xeon CPUs. Two for myself, and one for a friend. They have all been "Machinist" brand boards. The first one I built was in 2020 and suffered from several known issues at the time, mainly: (1) Temp readouts were pure fiction (2) and often locked the system up attempting to read anything other than CPU/GPU (3) USB 3.0 ports were highly temperamental and would more often than not, lock the system up when used for anything more than brief data transfers. (4) Suspect VRMs (4) was easily fixed with a horizontal cooler on the CPU blowing downward and an exhaust fan out the back. (1-3) were never resolved. The board was Linux friendly and I never suffered BSoDs under Windows or issues under Linux. The one I built for a friend suffered a power surge that wiped out the PSU, but left everything else untouched (which surprised me, I hadn't expected the board to be that robust) so it was an easy fix. A testimony to the PSU more than anything I suppose. The latest Machinist board I am using, x99-k9 v2, solves all of the issues that plagued the first version. VRMs now have beefy heatsinks (and some of the x99 boards for sale even have active VRM cooling) accurate temps all around with no lockups, and USB 3.0 no longer causes hardlocks. I'm using a Xeon e5-2690 v4 CPU (14c/28t) and under benchmarks it's equal or better than my Ryzen 5 5600g system, for a fraction of the cost. As a matter of fact, the board/cpu/RAM combo set me back under 70$ during an xmas sale which was really massive bang for the buck. It comes with a m.2 nVME and m.2 NGFF SATA connector and neither (at least according to CPU-Z) interfere with the PCIe lanes of the GPU, which is nice. I understand buying these boards is still a hit n miss affair (several of them come with consumer chipsets rather than server ones, but the sellers on AliExpress have been more forthcoming about this sort of thing) and of course support is still reliant on unofficial websites, but there is a fair amount of knowledge out there. The Eastern Europeans seem to be big fans of these boards because of the bang for the buck. So, what has your experience been like?

Howdy! I have a bunch a bunch of parts and everything to make a X58 build but I'd like some help on getting Windows for it. Here are the specs: PSU: Thermaltake 650W Bronze Motherboard: Gigabyte X58 UD3R Rev2.0 & an Evga x58 132-bl-e758 Thermal Paste: Noctua NT-H1 CPU: Both an Intel i7-950 and an Intel Xeon x5670 (can get to bios with both boards and prefer to use the Xeon) Ram: 4gb Hynix stick Cooler: H75 AIO water cooler from Corsair (what fan speed should I set the pump at btw?) GPU: GTX 650 Ti Boost 2 Storage: A super cheap 64gb SSD from Vaseky Right now I'm trying to install Windows on it, but I've seen a few posts in different places that have said that Windows 10 will work and also others that say only certain Revisions of it will. So I decided I'll probably be going with just Windows 7. Where would I be able to find a copy or could I make a Windows 7 copy to a flash drive from my Windows 10 laptop? Also for you X58 lovers, which motherboard would be better for some overclocking and general ease of use? I plan on OC'ing the CPU and GPU (I know that I'll need to push the base clock quite a bit for CPU of course) The EVGA mb has an active Northbridge cooler while Gigabyte is only passive, so that'd push me to lean towards EVGA but I'd love some advice! Thank you for any help!!

Greetings!!! i am looking forward to build a budget 3d modelling Pc using softwares such as 3ds max, Blender, Vray and bit of animation as well.... My options available in area are hp z600 with Dual xeon x5675 (12 core 24 threads) and possibly a Rx570 4gb. Else i have an option for hp z440 with xeon e5 1650 or a similar 6 core cpu and rx 570 as these are costing me about the same in my budget.. I have been told that x58 platform lacks Avx support hence its limitations but still confused as i need my render times to be reasonable... Looking forward for you opinions thanks

Hey folks! I have an old workstation lying around which I intend to turn into a FreeNAS machine. Its a Lenovo S20 (4105) with a Xeon W3503. I'm not sure what motherboard it is. Most probably x58. The manual says the board is Intel Tylersburg 36S (which is the codename of x58) but the supported CPUs only say Xeon. Take a look - https://support.lenovo.com/au/en/solutions/pd005642 I just came across an i7 960 that's selling for real cheap. Is it compatible with the system ? If yes, is it a good choice for a FreeNAS ? (Plan to use as NAS and run 1-2 VMs) Now for RAM, the documentation on ARK says that the processor supports DDR3 800/1066. The system had 1333MHz RAM installed. Would it have been running at lower speeds according to the CPU spec ? I'm a bit confused. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Hey guys, Is it possible to overclock CPUs (like x5670, x5650) in following motherboard?? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-X58-ATX-LGA1366-for-Intel-Core-i3-i5-i7-Xeon-Computer-Motherboard-/131990462474?hash=item1ebb3ea00a:g:8JcAAOSwzvlW8qjI I'm hoping to build a used PC. Cpus are available for $50, but a good x58 motherboard is three times the price of CPU.

X58 motherboard, what do i look for?
Bananasplit_00 posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Ok so iv wanted to get into the X58 platform for quite a while now because the CPUs are so crazy cheap(like $18 ) but motherboards are expensive. i want to know what are some good boards and what to go for, my plan is to get a good motherboard and CPU then drop a nice cooler on it and push whatever CPU i get to beyond 4GHz so i can have pretty amazing preformance(seen them preform close to Broadwell-E when overclocked). its a personal project iv wanted to do for a while now and i want to make sure i get the right things. i currently have about $250 and this will either be replacing my main rigs CPU and motherboard(I5 4690K @ 4.7GHz and ASRock Z97 Annaversairy) or the LAN PC(I7 2600 and ASUS Sabertooth P67) depending how it preforms in games and general multitasking. thank you for any information on this and thanks for any recomendations and help- 1 reply

I've had this build for a while but recently upgraded to SLI 970's. Also did a bit more modding with a PSU shroud and custom SLI bridge. It's called the H-Frakintosh as a mash up of H-Frame and hackintosh, it was my idea to make this into a hackintosh but haven't got round to it yet. Specs: InWin H-Frame Xeon X5650 @ 3.8 GHz MSI X58 Pro-E GTX 970 turbo X 2 12GB DDR3 (mix and match 6 x 2GB) Corsair CS750M semi modular PSU Crucial BX100 120GB SSD 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD Hyper 212 evo Silverstone FQ212 PWM blue/white fans (might get another for the cooler) Mods: Painted Ram heatsinks Painted CPU cooler Custom PSU shroud Custom SLI bridge Custom GPU backplate ATX cable extension Blue modular cables Pics:

I'm looking to buy a used X58 Lga 1366 Motherboard, Asus Sabertooth is preferred but not a must. Any good places to look? (Ebay prices seem to be massively inflated on X58 Chipset motherboards) - I'm okay with bendt pins and other easily repairable issues.

I was gifted an old i7 990x as a 'thanks' for helping tear down a friend's old Alienware. I thought I'd grab a cheap second hand x58 mobo and build a sweet little gaming rig for my kid. Sadly, it seems mATX x58 motherboards are rare and crazily expensive. So should I give up and sell the cpu or is it worth keeping looking for a board??

Hey everyone perhaps someone could help me with an issue I've been having. My computer won't boot to windows 10 with two GPU's installed. I recently dusted the case out and switched to a better motherboard and processor. Currently running an Evga X58 SLI- LE mobo, a Intel Xeon X5650 six core processor, Kraken X31, 24gb of Corsair DDR3 RAM, two GTX950 SSC, Corsair CX750M PSU, one SSD, and one 2 terabyte HDD, I've done a little diagnosis so far. Started with disconnecting everything except one card in the X16 slot, the ssd (operating system files only) and my AIO connections, and one stick of known good ram; that booted up with no problems. Next I installed my second gpu into the next available X8 slot. It would open up the bios and go through the boot process but would then crash and restart the process. I then un-installed the known good GPU and installed the second GPU into the X16 slot and that booted fine. Where should I look next?

Hi so I have an MSI X58M motherboard that was working before but I needed to flash the bios to the latest version so I can use the cheap hex core Xeons on ebay. So I downloaded the bios on the MSI website and i used the mflash utitlity in the bios to flash and it said that everything was successful and it was going to restart the computer. After it restarted the board won't post so I can conclude that the BIOS flash must have gone wrong and now im stuck with a bricked X58 motherboard. Is there any way to force some sort of reflash so that I can try to flash an older BIOS so that the board can work again? Or am I really stuck with a bricked motherboard.

So I'm purchasing an Asus P6T (not the Deluxe or WS) and I was wondering if a Xeon W3680 would work in it. The board supports the I7 980X which is the consumer grade version the only difference is ecc support. Will the Xeon work or do I have to get the 980X? I can do the I7 but it's about $70 more so the Xeon would be preferable
