I am in the process of overhauling the network to a server and its workstations in an office. I am here because I am a few question in regards to Mini-GBIC. I am replacing the offices two 8 port Netgear switches with a cisco SG102-24NA. This should help remove some bottlenecks the workstations are having when it comes to communicating with the server. Now the server needs to have its network card upgraded and I am thinking of moving it over to a Mini-GBIC since I have read this connector has a larger bandwidth. I am just wondering if it is worth it. The cost is not an issue but I need to eliminate this bottleneck that they are having. If this is the best option, what connectors/cable and PCI expansion card would be the best to go with? The server is running windows server 2012 and is used for the DNS log in transferring data like photo and stuff of that nature. The server will only be a few feet from the switch as well. If this is not the best option what would be?

1. budget and location. So this is easy USA, New York. Between 1300-1400 2. Aim Simple I need a workstation that can edit, encode and render 4k footage in h.264 and h.265 compression.(btw use Adobe premiere for those wondering) 3. Monitors 1@4k or 1@1440p (not owned but not part of PC budget) 4. Peripheral. Will need a monitor that's 4k good color gambit 5. Reason for upgrade Okay very simple reason I'm working on laptop right now and it's simply not cutting it in the Acer predator Helios 300 constantly overheating the screen is very small and working on a laptop is just overall uncomfortable for many hours I'd much rather be sitting at a desk with a PC and a laptop that can barely cut my work. A friend made a build here for me on pcpartpicker. com but I don't understand much of what I need to get job done so any and all help and comments welcome Link https://pcpartpicker.com/user/avatar19978/saved/H74whM (Stealing line from a post sorry) In short is this build gonna be good for what I need are there better options?

Hello everyone, So I will start my electrical engineering bachelor this fall and I saw that the university has an offer for a discounted professional laptop. It is the HP ZBook Studio G4. Or at least it was last year... Maybe this year they will upgrade it with the G5. So my question is: Does this laptop really need a Quadro M1200 and is it a lot more powerful than a normal mobile graphics card? I don't really have any ideas about how CAD renders and other professional engineering stuff work at the moment, but I will once I start my program. Is the Quadro card even worth it over a cheaper gtx consumer line graphics card? Thanks

Hi, My boss recently approached me and asked me to buy 2 PC's for our new showroom/reception area. I asked him for the reception table plans and noticed he hadn't left space for a tower anywhere. How budget per computer is around a thousand Canadian rubles. I'd like options, what computer/monitors should I get for him. I wouldn't mind assembling custom PC's myself but for work I'd kinda prefer a prebuilt system. Also what I'd like to look into is maybe getting a server/desktop in the backroom and maybe some type of wired system (cat6 or thunderbolt) to to each work station. I like this idea as I could potentially use that server as well for our business applications servers (I currently run that on a 8gb VPS at OVH) and it might be more simple to add more stations later on. I believe Linus did a video on a similar system at one point and time but I can't find it. Thanks for your opinions, Trevor

Hi everyone, I am building my first PC, here are two PCPartPicker lists of parts that I chose to use in it. (I am not certain which case and consequently which cooler I want to use) https://pcpartpicker.com/user/BlueBirb/saved/#view=NkNy4D https://pcpartpicker.com/user/BlueBirb/saved/#view=LDYW3C My budget is up to 2100€, wouldn't really go above, rather lower for around 1900€ or less. The system is going to be used mostly for video editing in DaVinci Resolve and audio production in Live 10. I might do some light gaming in the future, but I am not sure. (maybe some Minecraft or Rainbow Six Siege) I am planing to use a 4K 27 inch monitor, if i will start gaming i will probably buy a 144 Hz monitor in the future. I will run Windows and probably Linux, not sure if on a virtual machine or with dual boot (what would be better?) Here are the things I am not shure about: - is software raid worth it, if i use two toshiba 5TB disks in raid 1? - I will have 1 500 GB nvme SSD my boot drive and for programs, I am choosing between the Sabrent Rocket and Samsung 970 pro. (I am leaning towards the Sabrent drive, because I think that i don't need the extra performance and endurance of the Samsung drive, and I also think it is kind of overpriced.) - which fans are quieter, Corsair ML pro or Noctua industrial? - which cooler is quieter, Noctua NH-D15 or NZXT Kraken X63? I know I chose a SFX power supply, I will need it in the future so no need to change there. Thank you for help in advance and sorry for the bad English. :D

Hii guys Longtime Linus subscriber first-time poster, to start off I would like to apologize for any grammar or bad spelling mistakes. I’d like to get some of your thoughts and expertise on Workstations especially for Autodesk Fusion 360, and SolidWorks, plus other things such as Arduino programming, running Python scripts, etc. and maybe light gaming, I’m not much of a gamer. I’m a mechanical engineer, and I recently in the past couple of years started 3D printing and trying to learn Arduino and such. Now keep in mind although I’m Arab, unfortunately not one of the rich ones, so I’m trying to keep the cost as low as possible. Without further ado, here’s what I know, Fusion 360 can utilize multicore, but many recommended I aim for a faster CPU rather than multi-core, so should I get something like i5 6600k quad core overclock-able 3.5GHz to 3.9GHz, and is it safe or recommended to do so? And for the RAM I know that 8GB isn’t enough from my experience with my laptop, I might get 16GB but don’t know what I should look for in MHz or DDR3/DDR4. Now to the sexy graphics cards, I know nothing about this sexy topic, all I know is that I’d need something like Quadra, but can I game in it if I ever wanted to? and how much VRAM would I need, or should I get one of the old GTX cards? SSD, should I get 500BG SSD or I can get away with 256GB, I’ll use HD for my data awaydays. Sorry for the long post, this is the longest post I’ve ever written in my life. I might even post this in PornHub, a lot of guys and girls are helpful there too. And thanks for listening guys, hope to hear from you soon.

First off, let me apologize if this isn't the right area. I figured Tech Support cause that's technically what I need. Hey guys, I have a project here at work to try to figure out how to create a thin client environment using one of our HP Workstations, and HP Thin Clients. The workstation specs are coming soon, along with the thin client. My question is this: Would I be able to create an image on the workstation, have the thin client PXE boot to the workstation, use the image, but none of the workstation's resources minus the storage? My thought process is kinda like having a RAM Disk in that every time the thin client is shut off, the image is refreshed on their end, but never truly touched on the workstation side. Sorry for the lack of specs, this was just handed to me as an experiment, and I want to see if my idea is plausible. Thanks!

In november last year i started creating our company workstations around the new Skylake product line and be quiet products. the idea behind the machines was to have a very silent work area, therefore all the machines were equipped with Be Quiet!'s Dark Rock 3's, a somewhat big cooler. i then early 2016 heard about the skylake bending problem, and promptly started searching for a solution, what i found however is that past it being announced and now there hasn't been much talk about it. currently we have the option of changing our cases to one with a horizontal motherboard layout, but from what i read its from mounting pressure, which would still apply even if the cases were lying down.... Have anyone heard anything about this lately? Has this just blown over?

I am wanting to build an ultimate workstation. I am wondering if I can add 2 or more Quadro M6000 to this setup. Also, can I put these in SLI? Side Note: Does anyone know of any waterblocks for the Quadro M6000? Thanks!

What would be the best graphics card(s) for 4k video editing? I was thinking about a Titan X, but what are the alternatives to be better at that price point ($1000)?

Hello, I am thinking to buy a workstation from HP, the Z440. However I am not sure of the configuration I should get in it. I will mainly use it to make 3D renderings and 4k editing. What Xeon? The 1620 or the 1650? I heard the 1650 is a must go... RAM DD4 Should I go for 32Go? I will use 5 apps at a time, maybe 6. 16Go is enough or I should go for 32Go? Mainly Adobe CC apps and others like web browser and media players. Graphic card Nvidia k4100M or K2200M? Should I even look at the K1100M or the K610M? Storage Anyone has experience with the Z turbo drive SSD from HP? Is it good at being storage or boot or both? Should I go for standard SSDs? What about these Intel SSDs, anyone has experience with them? Having this Z turbo SSD doesn't make USB 3 and Thunderbolt connections too much? Is thunderbolt really better than USB3? RAID option Raid 0 is a fast option but the security aspect is compromised, anyone has experience with this? What would be the benefits of a Raid 1? HP apps certifications HP and its line of Z workstations have certifications with apps like the Adobe production suite, 3dsmax, autodesk, but not Cinema4D. Anyone knows it C4D works well and if not, is because of the single core issue? What other 3d/Video Editing apps are not supported? Thanks to all of you guys! Jaywaii

Hi Linus, I have a suggestion, why don't you move all the system units to another room and stream it from another room with a software like Steam in-home streaming ( I'm sure something better is out there ) like : KinoConsole / Kainy / Limelight etc.

This card is literally the most insane thing. You can run it in 4 way SLI and it has 16gb of vram per card. I'd honestly love to see the benchmarks on this and see some builds using it. Only downside is that it costs $4000. Hey guys, so in the next 2-3 weeks I'm going to buy a new desktop, but for a couple of months I've been thinking and still can't decide between the two. My options are or to buy an 8-Core D700 Mac Pro or an 8-Core (i7 5960x) Titan Z PC. Both graphics would be in sli, since I'm planning to use this computer for heavy video editing and gaming, usually light maybe sometimes some higher-res games. I would be editing 1080p video about 2-3 hours a day and game for about 30min/1 hour a day. Just to clarify, my budget is about $5000-6799. I need guidance since this is the first proper desktop I'm buying. Please comment suggestions and maybe constructive criticism, keep "you're wasting your money" comments to yourself please. Mac Pro Specs: Eight Core XEON Processor (V2) 32GB 1866Mhz Memory 1Tb PCI-E Flash Storage AMD FirePro D700 6GB Graphics (x2) Monitors: 1x Asus PQ321Q Custom PC Specs: Eight Core i7 5960X 32GB 2133Mhz Memory (Corsair) 1Tb Samsung 850 SSD GeForce GTX Titan Z 12gb (x2) Seagate 2Tb HDD (x2 in Raid) 1200 watt power supply (Corsair) Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl Monitors: Asus PG278Q + Asus PB278Q Please leave opinions/suggestions below. I am planning on using this computer for 5 years without part switching, which is why I am leaning to the Mac Pro since it has more durable parts, that last more than 1-2 years without replacing.

So the Guys over at Ifixit did their tear down on the New Mac Pro and found that it was easy to fix. Must say i'm genuinely surprised that the CPU isn't integrated/soldered on.
