    Mesh Wifi

My Linksys WRT 3200acm which I've had since early 2017 has given up. I am not sure how to go about replacing it, I need WiFi coverage of 10000sqft (the previous router did not actually do this but an upgrade is due). I am intrigued by the ubiquiti access point solution but this will require wiring and I cannot get an electrician till lock down is over. The other option I am looking at is a Mesh wifi system, either the Linksys Velop or the Netgear Orbi. I require more than the max of 3 access points that each of these come with. Is it possible to have 6 of one of these systems in a mesh? I have thick walls (some exceeding 1m) which I am worried will stop an effective mesh if anyone has any experience could you let me know how it works?
  2. Hey I have 2 Ubiquiti APs set up. One is a AP AC Lite, the other one a AP AC Pro. They both send the same Network SSID, one is our WiFi, the other one a Guest WiFi. It works perfect when it does, switches automatically from one AP to the other when walking from one side of our House to the other. However, i have noticed a problem where on both my Galaxy S10+ and Note 10+, it just disconnects from the WiFi and then does not let me reconnect for a while. And when it does, it only lets me reconnect after i click "forget network", then reconnect with the password. Then it works for sometimes a few seconds, sometimes up to 1h. The feature where it automatically connects to 4G when WiFi gets unstable is set to off, so that should not be it. Did anyone experience this? Channels are set to Auto, maybe there is the problem? Hopefully you can help me out, i would really love to get this up and running reliably. Thanks!
  3. Hello, I am looking to install wifi in to my garden, but I am not sure what to use. I would like something that can work in conjunction with an AP inside my house as well. I was looking at Ubiquiti airMAX stuff before I saw they only work between themselves and won't connect to my phone. I am now looking at maybe a Ubiquiti UniFi AC Outdoor Mesh and a Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-LITE. Alternatively, I was looking at a TP-Link EAP225-Outdoor Omada and a TP-Link EAP225 Omada. They both add up to £150 ish. Some added info; I have a long thin garden so a directional AP would be good, but I'm not sure what would be good. I want this to be as cheap as possible, but be reliable. TL;DL Help with good value house and garden WiFi Thanks
  4. Hi guys I wanted to ask you a question. What is the best option for stable Wi-Fi with no dead spots and good signal for a place around 200 square meters and with thick walls like hell. Im thinking about 3 Ubiquiti APs connected to together as one SSID because my friend is very angry about solution with multiple SSIDs so as one that will create few problems with connection that would be solve with MESH system but mesh system that would provide same connection for that price is very hard to find and because its company based it needs to be working 24/7 with 99%. So what would you do in my position? What would you buy or how would you solve this issues ?
  5. Hey everyone. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the new Unifi Dreamteam and how it relates to purchasing the components individually and also in relation to the Amplifi HD. I've been looking into a new network set up for awhile but I don't really have the ability to put the Unifi access points throughout my home (It's a renting thing) so I ordered the Amplifi HD last night but it looks like Ubiquiti have just released this: https://store.ui.com/products/unifi-dream-machine I'm wondering what you guys think of it vs the performance of the Amplifi system and the Unifi systems with their individual components like the gateway, switch, APs etc. I think you can add APs to this as well. I'm thinking this may be a good compromise for someone like me who wants the unifi system but can't do the full setup.
  6. This is a stupid question, but there is very little details on User Groups for the UniFi controller I can find, and some of it is contradictory. Is the User group bandwidth limit in the settings applied to each individual client device, or is the limit applied to the entire group. If I made a Public Wifi system, and I assign the Public WLAN to the Guest user group, and I set the up/down to 5Mbps for that group, is that per client? Let us say the total bandwidth from the ISP is 100down/25up. If every user on the Guest WiFi has a constant 1Mbps up/down, will that mean that 20 users will be able to use it before their speed degrades, or will it mean 5 users will be able to use it before their speeds degrade.
  7. I am buying a PoE router from Ubiquiti's EdgeRouter series, and am trying to figure out if their UniFi access points will work with it without the need for the UniFi controller, but have not been able to find that information anywhere. Please Help.
  8. I have the Unifi Controller setup as a jail on my FreeNAS server that is controlling my AP-AC-Lite. I can use the app (iOS) for local connections to manage my network, but I can't access it outside of the network on my phone or computer. When I go to unifi.ubnt.com on my laptop, I can see my AP listed, but I cant manage it outside of the local IP. I have open port 8443 and tried to access it just by entering https://mypublicip:8443 in my browser and it just refuses to connect. I try to use that URL for the app as well and it doesn't work. I have a domain through google I would like to use to access my controller via my phone, but I can't figure out how that works. I've already added in my controller under settings>controller>controller hostname/ip, but that hasn't changed anything. The only physical Unifi hardware I have is the AP. Controller is through FreeNAS.
  9. so i'm using power beam 5ac gen2 and i don't know what's the best channel . so if anyone is experienced with it please tell how to chose the best channel .
  10. Hello, I've been running my house on UBNT hardware for a while. I set it up a while ago with 4 APs connected directly to my ISP router. This worked very well and I've been using them ever since without touching the controller software. I added a UBNT EdgerouterX down the line and that was fine too. Today I added another AP to cover a dead spot that is now in use and to set it up, I've had to reinstall that controller software. Ever since I adopted the APs into the controller, all things WIFI have just not worked. The Problem: Some devices stay connected (2 Tablets in the house), others stayed connected for a bit and decided to disconnect later and others instantly dropped connection (a dektop). When you try to connect to any of the APs, windows says that it cant connect and Android just doesn't. No error nothing. Cable connections work like always though. Things I've tried: - Update everything - nope - Various google searches making me change many settings - nothing - Restart of all hardware and software - no luck - reinstall of the software and hard reset of the hardware - same thing - more frustrated googling and I'm all out of ideas. I'm not particularly good at networking but know the basics. This is a step above me seemingly. Im not even sure what information to provide here to help you. Hardware: 5 x UBNT AC Lite (Firmware 4.0.42.10433) 1 x UBNT Edge router X (Firmware 1.10.08) 1 x Generic ISP modem Controller Software running on a Cable PC connected to Edge Router (Version 5.10.25 (Build: atag_5.10.25_11682)) Setup: Internet -> Modem -> EdgeRouter -> Switch -> APs & House EdgeRouter only hands out anything on 255.255.1.X Modem is only on 255.255.255.0.X (which is only the Edge Router) If I understand this correct then the Edge router Should be the DHCP server. I might be understanding something wrong here though since it seems to me like the controller software is emulating a router? Giving out IPs and managing devices etc. If that is the case, that's obviously not going to work but how can i make it work? Attached is the current settings file for the controller. Not sure if that helps. Sorry if this is a bit incoherent. I'm just so much out of ideas. Thank you to anyone willing to give this a think. EDIT: Mini update. Phone decided to connect randomly. Didnt change anything. Just decided to do that now. I took the opportunity to tell it the gateway was the edge router. Still connected. Maybe it is the DHCP settings then? Nevermind. It gets kicked as soon as i try to actually do something now. Again didn't change anything EDIT 2: I had a friend help me and now the Edge router is out of the equation. Current setup is just the ISP modem acting as the DHCP server and router in general. Same Wifi issues persist. After more testing, widows devices seem especially affected by it. Setting a fixed IP and gateway does not improve the situation like on some of the android devices. I have also contacted UBNT support. Will update when i get a response. 5.10.25-20190716-0030.unf
  11. Hey guys, I'm not a total expert on networking and such so excuse me in advance if I use terms that aren't correct. Ill try to explain the issue i'm having the best I can. Firstly my situation is iv got internet via "wirelessFibre™ Fixed wireless" and the speeds and everything is fantastic. My issue started when I upgraded my router to the EdgeRouter X. The interface is very intimidating, being used to standard routers all my life I had become confident with navigating my way around, but this is like a whole new level of network language I'v never experienced. I had the ISP guy set it up for me and everything worked great. I had my line in and then line out on 1 channel to a network switch which then fed all my devices. Iv been trying to word what I want to say for the last half an hour but I dont know the correct terms and I keep deleting it because I sound like a complete amateur. Ill stick with my main issue, every time i connect a device to my network either via wireless or wired to my switch, I get no internet access and have to manually set up an ip address on the device i want to use internet on. So for example i have to go into my network settings for that connection on my Nintendo switch and assign it a local address (eg. 192.168.3.20) then set the router (192.168.3.1) and the subnet (255.255.255.0) and then dns etc, before I can get internet access. I don't know why the second last number is "3", iv only ever known my router IP to have 192.168.1.1 or 10.1.1.1 etc. I now have 192.168.2.1 and 3.1 etc on this router. Its crazy confusing why im on the 3.1. The other ports on my edgerouter don't get internet but that must be how he set it up. I want to get my head around it all because I tried to fifddle and ended up knocking out my internet. After a few days trying to get help I eventually got one of their guys to remote login and get my net up and running again but I wasn't in a position to get help with my other issues. Hoping I can get some education from you you fine gentleman. Thanks guys -James
  12. Hello all, I'm approaching building my first home network. I'm hoping to confirm that this hardware will do what I need. I'm considering the following hardware: Switch: https://store.ui.com/collections/routing-switching/products/unifi-switch-8-60w Access point: https://www.ui.com/unifi/unifi-ap-ac-lite/ I have the ISP-provided modem/router, and I believe I can plug that into the switch, then connect the AP to the switch, then hey presto, internet! Am I right, or do I need more hardware? Thank you.
  13. I have a Seagate Expansion External Hard Drive USB 3.0 which used to plug nicely into the Linksys WRT AC1200 router I previously had - using this, I could access my hard drive's files from any computer on the network. I have since committed to the Ubiquiti life, purchasing an EdgeRouter X, a couple of US-8 Unifi switches, and a few UniFi AP Lites. Unfortunately, none of the Ubiquiti products have a USB slot. I thought I would be clever by purchasing the the Plugable USB 3.0 to Ethernet LAN network adapter (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AQM8586/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Coupler Adapter (Type A Female to Female) (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0793NX3GR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) so that I could do something like Routher->Ethernet cable->USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter->USB 3.0 coupler->External Harddrive USB 3.0. Alas, this did not work - the external hard drive did not even turn on. Any thoughts on where I went wrong here? Any more clever ideas than mine?
  14. I live in a rural area that has very slow Internet speed. There’s only one ISP that runs a wire to my house, and it’s not fiber. My wife and I use a lot of bandwidth, so cellular and or satellite don’t work for me because I can’t deal with data caps. I run a business from my home, and needs and faster Internet. Right now the fastest Internet I can get for my ISP is 12 Mb down and 1.2 Mb up. I’ve tried all of the Internet providers in south eastern Iowa to see if they have Internet over long distance Wi-Fi antennas. Nobody services my house. I live in hilly terrain, and close to the bottom of a hill. I know my neighbors which are about a half mile away, and they’re willing to work with me on getting Internet to my house, but every house I’m close to there is one hill in the way. What are my options? I don’t need Internet beamed from 10 miles away, just a half mile. But LOS would require a 50 foot pole, i’m not excited about that. Also, my current ISP is willing to do Internet bonding for me. What’s the max lines that you can bond together? I think there are boxes that can bond together more than just two, but does my ISP need to have something on their end that can handle more than two connections being bonded at one time?
  15. For various reasons, beyond the scope of this post, my parents switched from an Apple AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi mesh, to a Ubiquiti Amplifi HD mesh system. We went with the Amplifi for a couple reasons. 1) It was really robust per the reviews and our house does not get along with Wi-Fi very well thanks to steel ceilings 2) Super easy setup, I wanted my technologically limited dad to be able to adjust and upgrade it 3) we didn't care about speed that much because my parents are hardly power users, they just want to watch Youtube/Netflix, and our service is only 100 Mbps. ....In the back of my mind was also Linus's great experience with Ubiquiti. So we've had this Wi-Fi setup for a year, and it works great. The only catch is my Dad now wants to upgrade to a bona fide, remotely accessible home security solution. Right now we have one 720P nest cam, and it sucks. You can tell someone creeped around our driveway but we have no idea who they are because the resolution is bad and the compression for cloud storage is worse. Ideal upgrade would be a NUC server, attached to 1440p off the shelf security cameras off Amazon. Plan was to install open source security camera software on the NUC, and then remotely access it from mobile apps. However, preliminary testing on a VM with the security camera software has revealed an issue....... We can't set up our router to use either a VPN or dynamic DNS, so we have no way to expose the router to the outside world. It's all locked down by the manufacturer. On one hand: great, super secure router, nice job Ubiquiti On the other hand: We can't access our network from outside (unless we use Ubiquiti's proprietary solution which only works when plugged into another LAN), so not cool Ubiquiti Current ideas: 1) There's some kind of magic voodoo to make the Amplifi HD use Dynamic DNS, and then we can easily remotely access into our network 2) Set up the NUC to connect to a VPN server offsite, and remote viewing clients can connect to that same server, this is the idea I've just came up with and it seems the most sane. I can get a DigitalOcean Applet server for $5/month, that would be acceptable to my parents I think. Plus we could use it for stuff while traveling. 3)Set up the NUC as a VPN server (is this possible without access to dynamic DNS at the router level) 4) Something else? Open to suggestion. What we can't do: 1)Set up some other device to act as a router. I don't want to add that complexity for my parents to deal with, the Amplifi HD's routing workload needs to stay put 2)Some enterprise solution 3)Something that takes up a lot of space or is garish. Our Wi-Fi gear etc is in my mom's dressing room/home office (honestly makes a lot of sense, who is in the home office at 8 AM and can't wait 10 minutes). If it's a giant orange box that says "RTX " like Linus's shirt this week, I've moved out, but my Dad will have to deal with my mom being reminded we put that tacky box in her dressing room every morning, which won't be a good time. It's gotta be shoebox sized or smaller. 4) Something with an expensive subscription, my Dad (who is doing the upgrade) doesn't mind capital expenditures, but *does not like* monthly fees. $5 a month for DigitalOcean or similar is fine $25 a month would be a no go What we don't care about: 1) Super Duper security, all we need is a password we are not concerned about someone hacking into a video of our driveway. 2) Command Line, I can command line in a pinch. So NBD Re Idea #2: If I just connect the NUC to a private VPN made with software like Algo (https://blog.trailofbits.com/2016/12/12/meet-algo-the-vpn-that-works/), will the NUC be able to see other devices on the VPN, or will they both just have their traffic routed through the VPN? All the setup guides I've read make no mention of whether that is possible. Do I need to turn on SSH tunneling for that to work?
  16. Need to redo my whole network minus cables, as the new connection is 500mbit up and 500mbit down which is a 500x improvement in upload and 20x in download. All my switches are 8 port 100mbit and the current router is getting handed back to the previous ISP(thank god because I don't want to even dispose of that pice of garbage). I need WiFi for two floors(2.4GHz & 5GHz), probably one access point per floor, and two-three ethernet connections downstairs which is where the fibre comes in and then 5+5 ethernet ports in separate places upstairs. Budget is ~€300 if we forget the upstairs switches but I'd like it if everything fit in under that. I was recommended Ubiquiti AC AP Lite access points and an Edgerouter Lite as the router. But that left me short in ethernet ports. Will not touch anything ToiletPaper Link. Thanks for any help
  17. I have a Speco NVR and I need to view it out of the home and all of the ISP ports are blocked what should I do?
  18. Hey LTT! Looking to setup our home network with 2 Ubiquiti AP's to start. I will need something to act as the Router/Firewall. I have only an entry level knowledge of networking, and had initially considered using a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X but digging deeper this appears to be a little more advanced than I am capable of doing. Does anyone have any advice on what I can use for this?
  19. Hi all, I am about to revamp my home network, and I'd like to double check myself before making the purchases. To explain my plan better, I attached a network diagram to this post. The products I plan to purchase are as follows: Switch: Ubiquiti UniFi 24 port 250W PoE Switch (x2): Netgear 8 port GS308 (each used for rooms with an ethernet drop) APs (x2): Ubiquiti UniFi AC PRO Patch Panel: Cable Matters 24 port Cat6 Extra: Ubiquiti Cloud Key Based on this and my plan, do you see anything that I may have overlooked, or do you think this setup should work just fine? Thank you for your advice!
  20. Good morning. I received an email from my ISP (AT&T U-Verse) stating that I may have an open/exposed IPMI in my network. Two things happened shortly (a few days) before I received this email: Set up "new" computer/workstation and installed a new Ubiquiti Unifi AP. Does anyone know if either of these events would expose or create an exposed IPMI in my network? Some context: Using very old software 32 bit Windows XP and DOS software (point of sale) connected to an old Lenovo ThinkServer using SQL Using free "antivirus and antimalware" software on most workstations Server is not connected to internet Appreciate the help!

  22. What is this item on the ubiquiti site
  23. Hi, I'm was looking to get a gigabit switch at home since I only have a regular 100 Mbit one. I'm currently looking at the following options: D-Link DGS-1210-16 (https://eu.dlink.com/uk/en/products/dgs-1210-series-gigabit-smart-switches) Has the following, which is want I would want from a new switch VLAN QoS Trunking/Link Aggregation Port-Security (MAC based) ACL's 802.1X Port-based Authentication It has fiber uplink which I dont need since I cannot run new lines to another room with lets say a second switch for roof mouted cameras There will be no cameras connected to the switch directly (has some surveilance features) because I will need to either branch of a wall socket in some room to a poe switch to hook up cameras or use wireless ones. Ubiquiti UniFi Switch 24 (https://www.ubnt.com/unifi-switching/unifi-switch-2448/) this one is a bit more expensive but I'm also potentially interested in more stuff from UB (like AP's Security Gateway and such) if it is feature equivalent or has more features I would pick this one over the D-Link one My questions now are: Does it offer the same features (security wise) like the one from D-Link (has to be through the UniFi Controller) especially points 4-6? I dont have UniFi devices yet and I can't tell if the switch (throug the help of the controller can provide the same security features as the D-Link one) Does anyone have experience with the noise level of the UniFi Switch 24? I will be connecting 10-12 devices since I dont need PoE the 16 port options are more expensive thus the 24port model) it will sit in the basement in a room with the heater, my wall mounted smart home central unit and our home ventilation device (so its never silent in there but its not a big server room with blowimatron's either xD) regards Alkahna
  24. I am looking for a new router and I found Ubiquiti and Mikrotik are the most common where I live. What I would like to do is to split my internet connection by priority. Now what I have read in most cases is you can set a limit for max bandwidth a vlan can use, but what I would like to do is to set 50% for one vlan and 50% for the other vlan. But that if there is no activity in one vlan the other one can use 100% and not be limited only to the 50% and the other is just wasted. Is this possible? What router do you think I should go for, Ubiquiti or Mikrotik? I do not have much experience with any of them Thank you
  25. I wanted to know the required items to set up the network and then if you please, could you suggest parts? Ubiquiti networks all the way. In my family, we use 4 phones, 1 laptop, 1 tablet, 1 ethernet connected gaming PC (Setting up a Cat5e line for that) a chrome cast and a Roku.
