I have gotten a little bit into playing minecraft in vr and the experience is fine on my system with a xeon e3 1220 and an r9 280 but I think my single threaded performanmce on my cpu is holding me back. my gpu only ever gets to like 30-60% load and like granted, if I turn on shaders or anything it spikes up to 90-100 but just normally it stays pretty low. However with nothing open on my computer but minecraft vr (vivecraft) my cpu is between 60-80% and can spike up to 95-100% on rare occasion. I looked on ebay and core i5 3570's are only like $20 and so that seems like it might be a good upgrade but im not sure. I also looked at a core i7 2600k or 3770 but both of those were close to $100 and at that point its just not worth it. So is that a worth it as an upgrade? I also was looking at a few xeon cpu's that are under $50 like the e3 1240 v2 and xeon e3 1275 but I dont know if those will actually be worth it either. If this helps, this is my motherboard: intel extreme dz77ga-70k and im using an intel stock cooler which has been keeping my cpu surprisingly cool actually TLDR: Im looking at cpu's to upgrade to that aren't crazy given how old my platform is Thank you so much!

(Satire) Context: Recently I have been playing a game called "Prison Architect" and other simlar titles and I remmbered why the game is performing so badily, its a single threaded game which is supprising concidering most of the proccessing power is going towards pathfinding for NPCs, something which could more easily be multi-threaded that other tasks anyway I should probably get more on point. After pestering the studio on twitter about there anual profits and why they can't spend half a day for multithread performance with some incoherant mutterings of "potental DLC" - thanks paradox on the forum as well. I decided to move on to clearly see that they were not responacable for there lasyness Its clearly my fault as a consumer for not spending £400 plus board on the top end intel proccesser. I mark up this satire paragraph with a little inside joke of "here is the card Paradox, HOW MUCH?" Actual Point: I have a Ryzen 2700x and I was thinking about an upgrade soon since game Multithreading is to much of a task for a studio with the earnings of over 700 million per year; then I thought wait I am "cheap af" as my peers would say so I was wanting to enquire what would be the cheapest setup I could possibly do with could maintain 5ghz stabily for over an hour. I was thinking there might be a right combination of CPU and cooler or even my own custom loop so please inform me if you have any ideas. P.S. Don't take the jokes to seriously I have only paid them around £400 in total for my games, Im clearly just a compaining Karren.

Soo... I'm right now saving bucks for new workstation and waiting for Threadripper 2 but considering Ryzen 2 is out I think we can already take some blind guesses about TR2. But for sake of accuracy and to not dive into speculations let's focus more on 1950x as it's well known CPU and we can assume that in the end performance characteristics will be similar in TR2 I guess. ---- My problem is that I really am able to use all of TR juice. I'm using Linux as workstation OS, buttloads of virtualization, 12 bay software RAID6 with encryption and in-fly compression for long-term storage, RAID1 hdd for home with software ssd caching and ssd for os, dual 10G networking for NAS functionality, JACK Audio system for DSP when listening to music or watching videos with software decoding for superior quality... so on, so on... and I'm basically raping CPU pretty hard even on "idle". My current i7-2600K sits around 30-50% total load all cores on "idle" and shits its pants when I'm doing anything serious, pci-e lanes are suffocated as hell, VMWare suffocated by 32gb ram, SATA ports maxed, networking waaay below expectations, everything is so much maxed and bottlenecking atm, that I actually had to use plenty of drilling and modding to fit all this junk into mobo and chassis. I also use btrfs fileststem which strongly benefits from ECC RAM. So Threadripper sounds like no brainer right?... Well... not really. I'm not hardcore gamer, honestly. I do play AAA titles but 1080p 24fps is "good enough" for me. I use Quadro 4000 as primary GPU (I need 10 bit color support for graphical apps) and GTX580 as CUDA device for rendering. In fact I even play games in virtual machine using VMWare Workstation because well... I love Bethesda games and they don't really work on Linux, while Windows doesn't really work well with... my setup. But I still do perform few tasks that are heavily bottlenecking on single thread with i7-2600K and have similar characteristics to gamimg. 2600K also struggles with recording game from within virtual machine and I'm getting like 10-16 fps... it's quite uncomfortable. ---- Long story short - I'm afraid of such dramatic change and I'm puzzled as I don't know if TR single thread is really THAT terrible. It's hard for me to tell what exactly is bottlenecking with i7 (if it's cache or multi core) but I never really get to 100% on all cores even though system runs like shit. Does anyone know how TR performs as daily driver with multiple single thread workloads? My second concern is - I get impression that motherboards don't really use all TR pcie lanes? I mean I saw Gigabyte motherboards which look cool but they only have 48 pci-e lanes? Are really all remaining 16 lanes going just for stuff like M.2 and SATA? I saw that 1950x single thread performance is around the same as 2600K which really makes me worried :C I'm honestly afraid that this single core will be so terrible that I won't feel much of performance improvement. I didn't have many systems in the past so I don't even have any intuition regarding this topic. I don't expect it to be spectacular, I just don't want to end up with stuttering potato for 1k$

I am in need of a laptop for a fairly specific workload. I just can't seem to put all of the pieces together for what I want EVEN IF i am willing to lay down some real cash. Workload -simple to complex Solidworks CAD parts and machines. I do not have Solidworks Simulation. I will work with assemblies up to the full size cars but not production levels of detail. I do not need the laptop to do well on the large assemblies. If it can view and do simple editing at that level I would be happy. -Typing -Occasional Gaming Here is my list in order of priority. some of these are easy, some are not. CPU-- i7-8750H or better (single thread is the most important by far) GPU-- Quadro T1000 or better performance in Solidworks. I am not opposed to RTX 20xx cards SCREEN-- 4K preferred or 144Hz. 15" prefered but i could be convinced for a 17" Keyboard-- Must be excellent for long periods of typing. I prefer higher actuation force (I'm used to a Aero 15x) Ten Key Pad-- Is very important but I can get a Bluetooth one if i have to Thunderbolt 3-- If the graphics card isn't enough to handle the big assemblies I will get an EGPU Quadro RTX Storage-- NVME 1TB or larger. Dual drive of any kind would be very nice things that are not important to me Battery life RGB webcam touchpad quality IO other than Thunderbolt Fan Noise Speaker Quality

I have an Intel Core i7 4770 CPU and my friend has a 4790 or a 4970. We both did a benchmark test and I got a significantly lower performance than him. Using CPU-z, I got a 332 on the single thread performance and a 4920 for multi-thread performance. What does it mean by having a low performance on the single thread?

Hey guys, I just had a quick question about CPUs. I've heard that games are single threaded applications. Could you in theory then just buy a sinlge core CPU with a really high frequency and get good in game performance? I'm probably looking at this completely wrong... If someone could explain this a little I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Hey there, About time I asked another hardware related question... I'm planning a G3258 build... But my gripe is that it's a dual core... And that's making me have some second thoughts since I do heavy multitasking... Of course, I will be overclocking the G3258 to a target 4.2GHz on stock/auto voltages with air cooling... But a question was raised in my mind... Can the multi-threaded performance gap between a dual core and a quad core be closed by overclocking? I'd like to hear the community's thoughts... Thanks.

Recently, I built a rig with an M5A99X motherboard, MSI R9 290, 8 gigabytes of ram from Corsair, and an FX-8350. I've done a little bit of research on the CPU, and a lot of people say that it's better for multitasking and multi thread programs than the i5 equivalents, but the i5 is better at single thread programs such as most games. I'm wondering, is the FX-8350 still powerful enough to run games such as Planetside 2 or War Thunder? Because I've noticed that I sometimes get 35FPS framerate drops in Planetside 2, and it's not likely that the R9 290 is causing this (1080p resolution). Any help would be appreciated. PS. Sorry if this is a noob question, I'm still a computer noob. Just 2 months ago I was still using Pentium G620 + Integrated Graphics

I'd like to know what everyone thinks about whether these scores are credible.

Hi guys!! This is my first post so I hope this topic isn´t somewhere in the forum already and if it is I´m sorry I didn´t read it or find it before. I am a scientist from Spain (excuse me for my English I do the best I can) and I have some problems with a computer I have running certain application (it´s a chemical process simulator called AspenPlus; a single threaded application) and I would like to know if you have any advice or tips for me to make my performance better when using this software. First, a smal review of the system: PC.Specs: Intented to run just one application (single threaded) and OS (Win Server 2008 R2): Mother Board; Asus P8Z77-V Processor: i7 3770K running as out of the box (only Turbo Boost OC) SSD: Samsung 840 Pro Series 256 Gb SATA 3 CPU Vent: Stock (but in a server room at 17 ºC) GPU: Nvidia GT210 (really stupid because I didn´t need it with the one integrated in the processor but I didn´t know that when I bought it) What do you think I can do to improve the sigle threaded application performance (it´s kind of horrible nowadays). Ideas: 1.- Disable HyperThreading 2.- Overclock (how much??) (Will I need water refrigeration or an aftermarket CPU cooler??) (Worth it?) 3.- Any more Ideas????
