So I'm trying to build a home server, and I'm kinda hesitant about so many things. I'm gonna list the problems which I'm facing. As I mentioned, I would like to go with a low TDP since electricity bills are my biggest concern. We are talking about 35w CPU/APU. Considering the previous point, I would prefer an integrated graphics processor. I suppose it uses less electricity. Not to mention a lot cheaper with the current situation of the GPU market but keep in mind The GPU should be able to handle 4k. I live in Bulgaria (a small country in Europe), so that's my third issue. It is almost impossible to find some of them like, AMD A12-9800E, A12-9700E, Athlon 3000G(Although I have a huge problem with core count on this one), intel i9-11900T, i9-10900T, or even i9-9900T in Bulgaria. I tried looking for them on Amazon.de, I hit a dead end. Another thing is I would like to have a 10Gb LAN on it. I don't mind if it is a NIC SFP card or a motherboard with 10Gb. Also i want to have 2 PCIE x16 on the MOBO. I mean, nothing can go wrong with 2x PCIE x16! So keeping all these factors in mind, can anyone tell me if they have a better idea of how to start building this server (CPU/APU/MOBO wise)? My budget is around $1k. I could push it a lil more but not a lot. I would really appreciate any kind of help, even if it is a solid answer of "waiting to see what happens to the chip shortage" but i kind need a till when I should wait and what changes if I wait.

Budget (including currency): 10 000 NOK (~1150 USD) Country: Norway Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Current computer for gaming is used for games, streaming and the like / Planned homeserver will be used for watching movies over the cloud, cloud storage and game server hosting. Some games I'm planning to host, preferabely minimum two server at a time if needed: ArmA 3 Minecraft Rust Other than that, I want the system to handle running most of the time. The gaming rig will be running on 1080p 60Hz screens, mostly games similar to Doom Eternal, Hitman 2 and Battlefront 2 in quality. Other details My plan is to: Take older parts from my gaming rig, use those in building up a homeserver for the beforementioned uses and then upgrading the parts that have been moved from the gaming rig. I was originally planning to keep it all in the gaming rig and building the server from scratch but came to the conclusion that I might as well take it all at once when I'm first at it. I have gotten some questions why I'd build a PC to use as a server and not just a corporate level server or the like, but the reason is really that I find computers a lot easier to understand, and after much back and forth I've found it way easier to do it this way at least the first time around. Should I find out later on I want a "proper" server I'll always find a use for the PC server. PC Build I currently have a gaming computer with the following components, I will be putting the upgrade I'm planning to do in parentheses with red text, the rest will stay as is for now. Parts that will be moved to the server will be in blue. I'm not including storage space in the gaming rig as it'll stay, GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 8GB CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X (AMD Ryzen 5 3600) Ram: Unsure of brand, 8x2 GB Sticks (Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2x16 GB 3200 MHz)) MOBO: MSI B450 Gaming Plus (MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk) PSU: Cooler Master MasterWatt 550W Bronze Case: Phanteks Eclipse P600S Server Build All parts that aren't blue will be purchased, excluding the case that I have from before. Blue components are taken from the gamiing PC. GPU: XFX 590 Fatboy (This is not being purchased, but I had it in "storage") CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X Ram: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2x16 GB 3200 MHz) SSD: Kingston SSDNow 480 GB HDD: Seagate IronWolf 4 TB (1x, to start with) MOBO: MSI B450 Gaming Plus PSU: Corsair RM550X Gold Case: Fractal Design Define C * In the future I'll be purchasing RAID as a security measure. Conclusion I'm looking for any feedback on these upgrades and builds, does it sound like a decent setup? the motherboard for the rig is the one I've been the most unsure about but I came to the conclusion it might be the most feasible. I have a seperate question, if any can answer it. Is it possible to do a workaround with only a single displayport and wanting to play VR without having to disconnect the monitor all the time to plug the headset in? Thank you for all help! If any more information I've forgotten is necessary I'll add it ASAP.

I currently have 2 server machines in my home and plan to add 2 more in the future, With that in mind should I change from tower cases to rack server chassis or stay with what I'm using now? (Both cheap roswill mid towers) if so what features or size would be recommended for someone who's never built in a rack mountable case?

Budget (including currency): under 200000 ₹(INR) ~ 2420$ conversion rate 82.5₹ = 1$ but keep in mind that imported electronic are usually 20% more expensive in india which makes effective conversion rate 100₹ = 1$ . Country: india Programs or workloads that it will be used for: basic NAS , ERP SOFTWARE (Microsoft SQL server) , 2-3 VMs Other details : hear is the photo of the quotation which is by far the best i have got Please check if it's ok for the need and if it's fairly priced I am getting it at around 185000₹ ~ 2240$ without tax

Good day to all from far and wide. I'm planning on building a home server. I've been considering freenas as the backbone of the build. My build is as follows. i5 3470 Some msi atx motherboars honestly can't remember the exact name. 2x 4tb wd blue drives 16gb of ram And a 500w antec pcu. Now I have a long list of questions. How much should I worry about vibrations in the pc case for longevity of the drives (using an old pc case). Should I worry about cashing and maby add a 120gb ssd in the build? I'm planning on using it as a picture backup and a plex movie server. All recommendations are welcome and any advice going into such a project

Hi all, Just looking for some advise and to see what peoples thoughts are with the below build that i have put together. What i am trying to accomplish with this server is to make a small form factor NAS/server that will be used for Plex media server, high capacity file storage and at minimum 3 VM's. Below is listed all the parts that i have picked out and yes the motherboard isn't really well suited but it was within my budget. Budget: £850 Around (UK) Case: Fractal Design node 804 CPU: Xeon E3-1230V5 Motherboard: Gigabyte X150m-Pro ECC RAM: Kingston KVR21R15D4 16gb PSU: Corsair CXM430 Hard Drives: 4x 3TB WD Reds, 2x Toshiba 7200rpm drive and 1x250g ssd (Some of these drives i already own, i will only be bying another 2 wd reds) If anyone has any pointers or advise please let me know.

Hello Everyone, I'm working for a company that is moving into development of their own hardware based products. We will be dealing with PCB design & compiling for embedded linux, We have some software we wish to run and host. I would like some recommendations on a server setup. Software we plan to operate with are: Gitlab Confluence Documentation system NFS / FTP VM Setup / Archiving custom build scripts CAD Model storage License servers Day-to-day operation would be storing source code from employees in Gitlab software builds will need to be archived with Virtual machines backed up for each major revision (to counteract any software issues) Confluence will be used to document our products and for internal task keeping. NFS/FTP access for our developer's archive. We will be operating buildscripts for Linux, RTOS and FPGA software. I'm hoping someone would be able to offer me suggestions and support as to what questions I should be asking myself in order to work out just how much computing resources / storage / RAID / Backup we need... We are currently 2 employees working on the development, however will be scaling up in the next few years as things kick off. Thanks in advance for your help. -Tom

Hello, I am Ben, new to these forums and I am looking to upgrade my home server but looking for advice. My server is used as a samba file share for my iMac and MacBook Air as well as a Plex Media Server for the family. My current set up is a 2014 Mac Mini running macOS High Sierra. It has 4GB of RAM and a a 1.4GHz 5 processor. Through USB connection are storage drives: Alpha - RAID 5 enclosure with 4 x 6TB hard drive (18TB usable space) - day to day files and photo library Beta - RAID 5 enclosure with 4 x 6TB hard drive (18TB usable space) - archived files, used less often but still need to keep Gamma - RAID 5 enclosure with 4 x 4TB hard drive (12TB usable space) - Plex media Zaxira - WD MyBook with 2 x 3TB hard drives in Raid (6TB usable space) - TimeMachine backups for Mac Mini and other Macs on network This gives total usable space of 54TB of which I am utilising 31.5TB across all the drives. There are a mix of file sizes and types but the majority of space is used by large video files. My photos library is 800GB and there are also several Final Cut Projects. These drives are shared over gigabit internet through my local network. For my iMac which is my main computer which I work on from home I have a thunderbolt cable connected between the iMac and the Mac Mini. This enables me to connect to the Mac Mini directly and achieve write speeds of upto 250MB/s and read speeds of upto 350MB/s. The Mac Mini is backed up to the cloud with Backblaze personal account. I love this service as I get truly unlimited file backup for a fixed fee. The system works great except the Mac often has file permission issues and I have to go onto the Mac Mini to correct this to enable me to create folders, rename files or move files from my iMac or MacBook Air. I am also running out of physical space, USB points and wall power sockets to add additional raid enclosures when needed. What am I hoping to achieve? I would like to consolidate the hardware - ideally into a server rack. I am unsure on operating system - I am thinking UnRaid but that could be because I have seen it work successfully for LTT. It needs to resolve the file permission issue and have a primarily GUI interface - I can cope with the occasional coding. I have also had bad experiences with Windows storage pools so would like to avoid this. I want to be able to use a mix match of drive sizes and manufacturers. My plan is to reuse the 3.5" drives from this build and add some additional larger drives. The system needs the ability to add drives as time goes on without having to rebuild the array. The OS needs to be able to run the Plex Media Server. Either directly on the OS or in a VM. There needs to be an offsite backup solution. I realise Backblaze personal only works on macOS and Windows. Either an affordable cloud storage provider or looking to build a second backup server to put in the server room at work. Not sure if the Duplicati docker would be good in this scenario? (the initial backup would be done over the local network) Gigabit or ideally 10GbE. Keeping my thunderbolt direct link would be great if I could get it to work. How you can help? I ask the LTT community if you are able to advise on: The most suitable OS to use based on my needs above. Recommendations for hardware enclosures Recommendation on hardware components including processor and amount of memory I am happy to use ex-enterprise gear or self build depending on what you all believe is best. I thank you in advance for your contributions. If you need any further information on my plans please ask.

Hello LTT community! At my startup company our main server has slowed to a crawl (it's an 8 year old machine, and has been under heavy load for a while). It's a single tower, and I am not sure what the hardware is for it. It isn't our server that is consumer facing, it's just for internal accounting use. My boss is wanting to just buy a server, but I am afraid he'll make a dumb decision and purchase a pre-built server that is going to cause more problems. I need some recommendations for building a server machine, specifically: - What processor would you suggest for a server build that needs to lean on the budget side? We are not serving media from this machine, it is only running Great Plains software and running a database that is used by Great Plains. It doesn't have to be fancy. - What RAM, motherboard, and other components? again leaning on the budget side. - Tower? We have a budget of about $2000. Also, if it is not suggested to build a machine for that low a budget then let me know as well. Like I said before I haven't done a server build, so suggestions, reality checks, clarifying questions are all welcome.

I've had several servers through out the years but I've always gone with dedicated file servers for backups and archives i.e. Drobo, QNAP, and Synology but I outgrow these system almost annually. So I've decided to build a custom rack server that I can manually expand as needed and use on projects instead of just slow access offline storage. I've decided to use Unraid for the file server and possible a virtualization of windows running Vienna Ensemble Pro for orchestral samples and a tiered file system with HDDs, SSD and NVME over 10gbe. Questions in logical order: Can a virtualization of windows take down an Unraid server? I'd assume there are protections for this and the virtualization might crash but it is sandboxed and won't take out Unraid? If that is true then I will have the system run both, otherwise I'll run VEP on a separate system. I'm assuming ECC ram is necessary for a fileserver, true? Should I avoid Ryzen for a Unraid server and if Ryzen works well will Unraid make use of ECC on AMD? If Ryzen is okay, has anyone had 4x32gb UDIMMs work with a Ryzen MB? If not, I'll consider a Threadripper so I can have 8x16gb RAM of ECC UDIMM. If Ryzen/Threadripper are bad ideas or if ECC is not going to work with Unraid, I'll do a Xeon server. What file system works best for workstation tiered performance? btrfs, ,xfs, zfs, ext4 something else? I'm assuming btrfs because of the cache drives I'd be using but maybe I'm misinformed. Am I out of my mind and should continue using local NVME storage for the workstations archived and backed up to a pre-built file server and leave the pro-IT to the pros? Hey everyone, what's up? so I was going to finish my new PC build and I was thinking of something, I felt the need of building a render server because of a future project that may turns so heavy for a simple PC render. I'm not sure where I could find help or what I exactly needs but what I know is, what I'll make would be so heavy project to be finished in a one day and could be so expensive to use a render farm service in the first place. I could turn that money that I usually waste in a render farm service to make my own server but I haven't done that before. can someone suggest me something? a guide that I could start with or anything useful? and how much does cost to make a render server?

I'm planning on building a File Server/NAS for myself and some friends and my family to use to keep all of our random files that we don't won't taking up space on our personal systems or files that we would like to share. I've never really thought about what would need to go in so I did a little research on and watched some video on what I might would need in the build but I'm still unsure if I'm even choosing the right parts. I'm also unsure if it will need a video card, if it does that shouldn't be a problem since I'm planning to upgrade my personal system video card as well so I can just use the one that's in my current one (GTX 760). There is a chance I might end up hosting a minecraft server or some other random server for games off of it as well so I don't really know if 16GB will be enough (I know it is for minecraft) for some games that I would want to host a server for. Can anyone help me makes this build better? Possibly cheaper? I do really want the 16TB of storage considering lots of movies and videos will be kept on this system. After years of using my main workstation as my server and main PC, I have decided to build a separate server to unload some of the 24hr services and tasks. My goal is for this to be my plex, backup, file and virtualization server. I need your help with a few things mainly what OS to load onto my new server that will meet all of my needs and be as hassle free as possible. I have a new copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Edition already. I have also been looking into FreeNas. Please help before my brain explodes! The components I currently have for this build are: HP Proliant ML10 W/ HP Enablement Kit 742971-B21 Intel Xeon E3-1220v2 Kingston unbuffered ECC 32 GB (4x8GB) PC3-12800E 4 x WD Red 3TB WD30EFRX SanDisk X110 256GB SSD SanDisk Cruzer 16 GB USB Flash Drive. Components I need: (Recommendations Welcomed) Power Supply? New Case? (If Needed) Raid Controller Card? Currently, the motherboard has a built in raid controller with mini-SAS connector but doesn't support Raid 5, if I go the FreeNas route I will not need a raid controller since the motherboard can support 6 hard drives. If I go the Windows Server route I will want a Raid controller card since Windows Software Raid isn't great. Please feel free to give your input.

One of my favorite things to do is to dream about a system something i would put together if i had unlimited money. what i mean by system is everything except peripherals. because i know the price of a system can skyrocket as soon as you start adding in peripherals. i was tinkering around and these are the two systems i came up with... i don't work in the industry and i don't build systems all the time so please forgive me if these are lowbrow. however i would like to hear responses from everyone either if you have a system close to one of these or your a professional and you can lend some incite. X99 System Vs Server System and if you care here is my current system

Ok here is a list of questions that I feel that I need answers to to be able to make some important decisions on my latest build. 1. When making a server build with raid, do all the hard drives need to be the same provider and memory size and everything else about them? 2. Im planning on making my server be able to accept and deliver content/files to and from different devices capable of sending and receiving files from WHS 2011 server. 3. How do I do a wired connection for the server to transfer files? 4. Since it is gonna be a server, I would like it if it could use a server rack case. 5. If it will be contained in a server rack case, which one would be best? I need it to hold plenty of 3.5 drives and a raid card if I will be doing raid on the server. 6. Which raid is best for storing and streaming files to and from wirelessly (or wired)? 7. When I install WHS 2011, do I need a flashdrive to do it? Do I need a monitor and disc drive? keyboard and mouse? external disc drive? 8. I need some kind of easy non-expensive way to install os to the server and configure all settings that I need to do. 9. Since I will be streaming HD vids/movies, Which cpu is best? 10. If a hard drive fails, how do I determine which one is the failed drive without accidentally replacing a gd drive and not the bad one? 11. I would like the server rack chassis to how drive doors that are like the icydock multi drive doors. (if ya know what Im trying to say). 12. When I figureout which drive failed on screen, how do I find out which one in the chassis failed? (again, if ya know what im tryin to say). 13. Which ram type/capacity is best for 10 users on server? (reason I ask this question is cause I plan on giving TRUSTED friends and family the licenses, and in any given day/time they all choose to get on same time, I need ram to support it. I say this because I heard that use ram amounts that support how ever many users are on same time.) 14. Which type of multi-terabyte drive is best for always on? 15. Which type of psu is best for always on? 16. What is the difference between all the numbered rpm's and intellipower rpm's? 17. Which 3.5 mutli-terabyte hdd has longest lifespan for always on servers, capable for raid, and has at least gd data transfer rates. 18. What raid card is best for server raid? Sorry for so many questions, I just know sooo little about servers, WHS 2011, and raid. Thanks again to anyone who can answer any of those questions I listed. I realize that this might not make sense entirely. If it doesn't make sense please refer back to this link and then you may understand. (I hope....) http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/32576-windows-home-server-2011-compatibility-with-windows-8/#entry424569 Thanks again guys!!!!
