Hey Everone, I am currently working on a 2001 Kawasaki 1100 stx di JET SKI and I need to run some Diagnostic software that can communicate with the engine management module. Unfortunately, this software runs over a serial connection and does not run on Windows XP or newer. So my idea is to run Windows 98 or 95 in a Virtual Machine on a normal Windows 10 laptop and use a USB to serial adapter and pass it through to the virtual machine. Most of my questions are revolving around whether or not this is actually going to work as all of this that I have planned is totally theoretical and I cannot find any account of anyone actually doing this with a VM before. Here are my questions When purchasing a Serial to USB adapter; Should I go with Prolific Chipset or FTDI Chipset? I have heard mixed things about which chipset works better/ has better compatibility. on top of that, most of the things I have seen floating around on the internet are really old and likely out-of-date information by now. Anyone with any experience with these adapters would be helpful. would it be better just to source a really old laptop with a serial port on it? This seems like it might be a really solid option but then I realized that finding a laptop that old, that works, and that is for sale might be challenging. My main concern with all of this is that I might get everything done right on the software side and the Engine Management Module might just be dead, if that's the case I am not sure how I would know for sure that everything is configured right, I don't exactly have a known working serial device at my disposal. Any and all input is welcome. Edits: Formatting

Hi, I bought a used PS3 Controller CECHZ2H-A1. Obviously thia is the Hong Kong Version. I took it apart and board, shell, motors etc. seem to be all legit. But wut I can't get in my head is why this unit has a seemingly legid label with NO serial number. Not faded. Just nothing. Can someone explain?

I've recently replaced the motherboard of my T440p. I have tried using Lenovo Hardware Maintenance Diskette v1.89 and its successor ThinkPad Config Information Update Utility v1.02 to set the serials and IDs for my system. The latter of which is supposed to be fully compatible with the T440p. (For both I was only able to get the EFI editions working.) To my surprise, information had already been registered as the system board serial (B0) and as the system unit serial (20, but should actually be C0). If I've gathered correctly I am supposed to replace the system board serial with that of my original board. And currently, the set system unit serial is gibberish. I am however unable to change either. Not even when I try to re-initialize the EEPROM. It will give me a "write access denied" notification when I try to delete something or try to re-initialize. Trying to replace the system board serial (B0) results in the notification: "data of the same device type already in EEPROM". When I try to set the C0 serial without removing the 20 serial, it tells me that it can't comply, because they of course conflict with each other. According to the T440p Manual I'm supposed to hit escape while booting to avoid the EEPROM from activating when doing this. I've read on various Thinkpad forums that getting that right is a pain in the ass. This might be where the problem is, but I'm not sure. I've been escaping as hard as I can. In any case, I would like to have this resolved. So any help and/or suggestions would be very much appreciated! PS: I know the rules of this forum state that I should post as much details about my system as possible, But I doubt anything other than what I've already mentioned is going to be relevant to my predicament. If I'm wrong, I'd be happy to give you more.

Hello there, I have a serial adapter that sometimes disappears or becomes unresponsive, so my script resets it. I have just found that sometimes it will instead become ttyUSB1 or 2 instead of ttyUSB0, causing my script to keep attempting to reconnect a device that it will never find. How can I ensure my serial adapter stays on /dev/ttyUSB0? I know I could buy a level shifter and attach that to the Pi (and ttyAMA0?? will not move), but I don't really want to buy one if I can use the serial adapter I already own. Thanks!

Hello, I have an Alarm System that can output messages via a serial printer. How could I use a Raspberry Pi to read those messages that the Alarm System outputs? Is all I need a USB Serial adapter and some code? Or do I need special software to make the Pi pretend to be a printer? Thanks!

I need to kill all connections to a COM device after some uncontrolable code runs which uses this COM device. Some times these uncontrolable code may not close properly and causes the COM device to be unavailable. I am unable to disable or uininstall this COM device while the unknown active connection is present, for these require a reboot and I can not have the computer lose internet connectivity. I have tried both pnputil and devcon, both have the same issue. If i try to go up the connection tree (dont know proper name for this), and try to disable USB hub, same issue occurs *Also this is remote headless PC, I am unable to physicaly disconnect this USB device Thanks in advance

I'm claiming warranty on my memory as it's been tested to be defective, which code is the serial number? I've uploaded a generic image from google which is the same as my modules.

So I just started on my first custom water loop. I ran into a snag, I'm using a vertical GPU bracket that allows 2 GPUs to be fitted on it. I didn't realize until now that there is not enough space to put the fittings to connect both EKWB GPU blocks. So after some research I apparently need an EK-fc dual terminal to connect both. From what I researched there is not much difference between serial and dual on performance. So I was just going to use parallel since it looks better. But does that still apply if you are mounting the blocks vertically? Does it matter if its serial or parallel when its mounted vertically? Read Vehicle OBD (& Need somebody who knows serial)
TheNuzziNuzz posted a topic in Hobby Electronics
My goal is to read the vehicles codes (such as Tach, fuel level, oil temp) out of the OBD port on my car. But I have an odd situation. From my research, the computer in this car is a GM OBD "1.5" (As Described in the OBD-1.5 section here) the computer using something called "ALDL" at 8192 baud. I figured out this is some format of a serial interface. I tried using an arduino to interpret the data pin on the OBD port but just got a bunch of nonse in the serial log. I have searched through tons of forums and information pages to no avail and i'm pretty confused. Is there anything anybody could shed light on? -
So I have a question... I have two systems running off of a Cyberpower UPS, my main desktop and our surveillance server, and it can handle them both fine. I tried using Cyberpower's Powerpanel Business Edition software with the security server as the one connected to the UPS, and then having the software relay the status to my main desktop over the network, but that is flaky and I'm tired of seeing 10 popups at a minimum every time I log on. So I thought, hey, the UPS has USB and Serial connections, could I just hook them both up? I'm not sure if this would cause conflicts or not. And I don't feel like buying a serial cable to not have this work. I just want my main PC to shutdown cleanly right away in the event of a power outage, and then have the security server stay up until its just about to run out of juice to record any last bit of footage possible. Anyone tried this?

HI LTT peeps! We are doing a VR training demo of some custom built software from HP that allows our techs to do teardowns of copiers in VR. HP requires that I provide them with the serial of my system in order to tie their software directly to my build. This allows them to keep the VR demo from getting leaked as it will only run on my system. I gave them the serial that is stickered to the side plate of the PCI slot, however, this serial is not hardcoded anywhere in the BIOS, therefore when their software checks for the serial it will not launch when I start to go into the VR demo. It just indicates that I have an unauthorized system. I have posted this on the Gigabyte support forums and it has sat there for about 5 days going unanswered. I did find some info about a tool called: AMIDEDOS.exe that allows modifying of the serial in bios, but I cannot seem to find it online and even if I did I would be leery about using such a tool. Found on Spiceworks: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/388156-wmic-bios-get-serialnumber-only-returns-system-serial-number-whitebox?utm_source=copy_paste&utm_campaign=growth TLDR: A company I am working with is trying to supply me with software that is compiled and tied to the serial of my device. When I run the cmd: wmic bios get serialnumber It returns the following: SerialNumber Default string It should be displaying the serial of my motherboard. Is there a way to inject the current serial number of my board into my bios so that the software they sent me will work? My current board is: https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard/Z370-AORUS-Gaming-7-rev-10#support-dl-driver Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming 7 Thanks!

I have a old server that I would like to install ubuntu server on, unfortunately it only has a serial rj45 on it and no on-board graphics. I have followed this tutorial with no luck: https://github.com/ynkjm/ubuntu-serial-install Anyone know how? Or have a serial iso they could provide? If this isn't possible are there any other linux distros like Ubuntu that support serial installs?

I recently found this ETC Horizon HZ-SWP controller board: https://imgur.com/a/91jkIHm and this Parallel-to-DMX box: Exterior: https://imgur.com/a/pXwkSQX Interior: https://imgur.com/a/2X08vGv At the auditorium in which I work. They used this several years before I came there. I have spent a few hours trying to find documents about these or applications that may be able to communicate with these. If you think I am crazy for trying to resurrect something this old when I can buy a simple FTDI-based USB-to-DMX on amazon ( http://a.co/1cwhgZs) on the cheap, I agree. Nevertheless, I think it would be cool if I could get it to work. I was using an HP Win10x64 laptop connected to a dock that had Parallel (Printer port) and a Serial connection on it with no luck. I tried many open-source and free DMX controller softwares as well. Any help is appreciated! Thanks! (BTW this is a direct copy of my post on /r/technology, but I am a reddit noob and don't have enough karma so that post got deleted RIP)

I've gotten myself an old server case with loads of 5.25 inch bays, and I plan to (using many adapter cables and internal USB hubs) build a modern pc in it that can take pretty much any accessory or storage medium ever made and use it. I've already got floppy to usb adapters lined up, as well as plans for modding a cover plate for the somewhat odd dual psu mount, but one thing I haven't been able to find is what to put on the serial/parallel port covers on the top right: (note; not actually mine, but the same model; mine doesn't have the plate for two psu's, is black, and does have an IO plate) From some googling I've found out they're called 'knockout plates' or something like that, but I'm looking to fill them all up with appropriate ports and adapt them to usb somehow so I can use them in a modern rig. Any suggestions?

Hi. My dad got a bundle of cables that were destined for the bin and gave them to me. After going through them, there was 4 Serial (RS-232) male-female cables, 4 female Serial to ethernet I think it is, 3 USB printer cables, 7 kettle lead extensions, a VGA cable and a DVI cable. I know what I'm gonna do with everything but the Serial stuff. I know that my dad's old computer has Serial but pretty much all mid-range PCs made within the past 8 years don't have it. What can I do with Serial? I don't want to see these cables go in the bin especially because they're brand new. Thanks, Alpha.

Hi. I've gotten a lot of Serial cables but have no use for them and don't want to throw them out. Can I change the plug on the end, for example? Or is there a use for them with older computers? Thanks, Alpha.

Hi guys, this is a newbish question but I just can't get it down. Does it matter which direction the water flows inside a GPU block? I mean if I have 2 cards, and I enter the 1st on the bottom left, exit it on the bottim right and go up to the top right in/outlet of the 2nd GPU, the water is flowing backwards am I right? Do I have to make a 45° turn to get from bottom right to top left so that the water flows the same direction in both blocks or doesn't it matter? Thanks Steve

Me and a friend are attempting to use some old SANs that our college used to use however they haven't provided us with any information for connecting or signing in. I believe the SAN is a E=MC2 CX3-10 san, I believe there is a C on the end of the 10 but I can't remember. We are unable to connect to the TCIP management network since we don't know what subnet the sans run on so we have been trying to use serial and PPP. Using a serial cable, cisco cable, a emc micro db9 cable and a self wired patch panel to wire the correct pins together we have been able to get a basic serial output when the SAN starts but we have been unable to access any information or change any settings. My friend believes we need to access the SAN either through the management network or by using PPP however, we have been unable to make PPP work at all. as far as I know, PPP uses the same port on the SAN as serial so that isn't the problem but we aren't sure if we need a modem or anything to correctly communicate with the SAN though PPP. Since documentation is very hard to find I was just wondering if anyone else had operated one of theses SANs and if someone can give us some guidance or advice.

Hello, I recently encountered the problem that my switch was limiting my network, please help me. I get 150mb/s when I directly connect the computer to the modem, but when I use the switch in-between, I only get about 95. I don't know what is causing this problem, but it would be greatly appreciated if you had any ideas, or and suggestions. I will try anything to make this thing faster (Within Reason). As the setup goes, I have the modem directly connected to the switch, and the computer hooked up to the switch as well. When I have the computer directly connected to the modem the speeds are up to almost 170 mb/s, but when it is as I previously described, the speeds are significantly slower, and it is just incredibly frustrating. Please help me. I would greatly appreciate it Thanks, Peter

Hello, I have a Wacom art pad 2 (KT-0405-R) drawing tablet that connects via serial. I have been trying to find out how to set it up on windows 7 x64 with a Sabrent USB 2.0 to Serial (9-Pin) DB-9 RS-232 Adapter Cable 6ft Cable with Hexnut connectors (SBT-FTDI) converter. I have heard of people getting it to work but I have no idea what I am doing wrong and would love some suggestions. The last time I used the drawing tablet was on an xp machine and it worked fine. Thanks Nopin
