I have had multiple Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles: both original, slim, and pro/x models. As these consoles go EOL and show up in more numbers used or broken on sites like eBay, there are some things that can be done to keep them running and usable, and ways they can still get use. The PS4 has had one of the best library's for exclusives, and even in the next year or so, lots of games including horizons: far west will be coming to the current gen console. These consoles still make good devices for younger siblings, cousins, grandchildren to use to play games, especially with the large amount of used games and large back catalog. A lot of games can be had for cheap. Also, since all the PS4 consoles have a disc drive, if you live in rural areas with poor or very data capped internet, then the discs could be very useful to you. If you go the PS4 route, try for the pro if you plan to use it for gaming. I also recommend replacing the thermal paste in the system. Every time I buy one of these last gen consoles, I always replace the thermal paste first thing, then usually replace the HDD, since I mostly buy ones with bricked drives. I also usually put in a 1-2tb SSD. Even a QVO or other lower end SSD will do wonders, mainly in the upgraded consoles, but even in the base versions there can be big load time improvements and texture stream in improvements. IO performance from the HDD in these systems can actually hurt performance in such a way that this upgrade helps a lot: I have experienced this with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 on both PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Textures load in way faster, the frame rate is far more stable, as you move around maps there is no more hitching as the drive seeks the next part of the map. If you really want to game, PS4 and PS4 Pro are phenomenal choices still, especially with the back catalog of exclusives, and even once the new consoles come down in price, the old games will be able to move forward with better performance, hopefully, to the new console. The Xbox is a different matter. I would not buy the OG VCR Xbox One, leave that one be. If you want to play games, always go for the One X. Again, thermal paste change and a drive switch are very helpful, and the One X actually can have better performance due to the higher CPU clocks and more ram than the PS4 Pro in cross platform games when moved to an SSD. The One S is a different thing all together. While I would not want to game on them, both the One S and One X are far better media machines than the PS4. They both support 4k blu-rays, support Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and support Dolby vision and hdr10. Having this wide range of capability makes them actually good streaming and media playback boxes. I got my parents a One S, and they love it. I has all the streaming apps, will play their old DVD's, and I even got a VCR/DVD combo that a HDMI translator so they can play tapes using the HDMI passthrough on the console. The One X is a gaming beast, especially with an SSD to have less IO bottle necks in games, but both consoles are some of the best media machines there are, especially if you have a nice home theater setup. The Xbox Series S/X maintains this support, with the Series X being the only one to play 4k Blu-ray, and is one area that the current and next gen consoles from Microsoft are leaps and bounds ahead of Sony. Xbox game pass is also a thing to think about, if you have good internet, as having over 300 games ready to go, just download them to the machine is a very nice thing to have available. I know a lot of people do not think about replacing the thermal paste, but most people on here use pc's, and so may be more inclined to change thermal paste more regularly. I use kryonaut in all my builds, and once yearly when I do loop maintenance on my main pc, I also repaste and clean out the dust on all my consoles. Even if you use something like MX4 though, there is performance gains to be had, and repasting would not need to be yearly. The consoles though do have room for improvement in the thermal paste department, especially if they are used when you buy them. I have found I need to use a little more than I would on a pc, due to the way both consoles mount their cooling solutions, and after I have changed the paste, the fans do not spin up near as high, and there for not as loud, and there is a noticeable and measurable increase in the temperature of the air exiting the systems. Measure on the same system before and after, I went from 49 C exit temp on the One X to 58 C exit temp, and the ambient temp was ~20 C. The PS4 Pro was more dramatic, with an increase from 51 C to 65 C exit temp with ambient temp again ~20 C. These are just my consoles I have used, and as another note, before the thermal past change on the One X, it would crash after ~2 hours of gaming, and would not boot till it cooled and rested for ~1 hour. After the thermal paste change, it has been able to play for over 13 hours straight with no problems or slow downs. As for the SSD, internal is nice to have, especially for boot up, switching between apps, texture streaming, and slightly reduced power consumption and noise, as there are no moving parts. Making your own external SSD will get most of the benefits, the startup and switching apps will be slightly slower, but it would be easier to move the games to the new consoles when or if you get one. Even still, to get a little more performance from the system, an internal SSD can help a lot. Digital foundry has done many looks into the load time, but one thing to also think about is texture streaming and in level loading. Watching their Xbox One X coverage of Jedi Fallen Order, their gameplay was noticeably at a lower average framerate and more laggy in levels when loads, lots of enemies, or big texture streams came in, with large dips in framerates when fighting enemies or loading more of the level. I did not experience any of the on my One X with an internal SSD, there were no loading hangs, slowdowns due to enemy and terrain stream in, and way less loading time. This was in 4k, and it was pretty locked at 30fps, but even in performance mode, it stuck closer to 502sh according to my monitors built in frame counter. These are just my thoughts, and what I have done and experienced over the last generation. I do not think that these will fix issues in games like Cyberpunk, it could make them a little less bad, but honestly I do not think it will be that helpful, as that game has horrible optimization for these consoles. I think these areas are being overlooked, and as more of the newer consoles come out, picking up the older consoles for cheap for extra gaming systems for family members, old school system link on the Xbox's for lan parties after covid, media playing machines for guest rooms or home theater setups, and maybe even just to have and tinker with could be something to look into. I have bought lots of One X's and PS4 Pro's that have had HDD or HDMI failures. HDD failures are easier to fix, as long as the drive is not dead, it can be reformatted to be reflashed as it would in the factory, or if replaced with an SSD, then can be put in a pc or plex server or the like as extra storage. Just something to think about as the old consoles flood the second hand market.

Ps4 pro has been loud even right out of the box new. Sound like a jet engine spooled up. Kept clean and even after new paste still loud. Well I decided to lap the cooler. Found the crimp for the cooler pipes left a indentation in the mating surface. It was pretty bad . Was a factory issue. I lapped it out. Polished it with a dremel. Didn't get a pic of the finished but got some of the imperfections. So if you have a ps4 pro that sounds like a jet.. lap or out.

First of all: Yes I am guilty of gaming on a PC and a Playstation. Don't wanna miss out on Final Fantasy, affordable VR and Couch-Coop But my PS4 Pro is 4 years old, got louder over time and especially more demanding games make it sound like a jet engine. When playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider for about 15 minutes the Sound Level reached over 65 decibels! I know this measurement isn't perfectly reliable but it is good enough as a comparison and way better than with those decibel-meter apps So anyways I decided to do something about that. I did my research, went shopping and here is what I did: First of all I consulted ifixit.com on how to strip it down to the MB. Then I prepared the APU with nail polish before applying liquid metal instead of the cheap thermal compound as der8auer taught us I used Coolaboratory Liquid Ultra since it is a little thicker than Liquid Pro and more conveniant to apply. The mosfets got new PHOBYA XT thermal pads. Now to the other side of the MB where the eight 512 MB RAM chips are located. Those got solid copper heatsinks. In order for the fan to cool them I had to dremel out a portion of the metal plate that covers the MB. Now I cut a few holes in top and bottom cover on which I mounted 120mm BeQuiet Pure Wings 2 fans with Aquatuning dust covers. One on the top to push fresh air into the stock cooler. And one on the bottom to cool the RAM and the back of the MB under the APU. To power the fans i soldered a two-pin fan cable directly to the 12V fan controller of the PS4 Pro. To still be able to control the fanspeed I used the Noctua NA-FC1 fan controller and hooked the Pure Wings up to it. The cables mostly run inside the PS4. I asked a friend to print me four feet for the PS4 to give the bottom fan enough clearance. While I was at it I also replaced the slow HDD with a Samsung QVO 1 TB SSD. So now all there's left to do is wait for a thunderstorm and yell: "IT'S ALIVE! IT'S ALIIIIIIVE!!!" Later I found out that the whole build including the new feet was too wide for the old spot on my subwoofer So I repurposed the feet and positioned the PS4 in the upright position. And I gotta say after the whole mod I like it way better that way. I can tell you that the result is significantly quieter than before and not annoying at all. Noticeable at best and that's all I was aiming for. After the same 15 minutes of playing SotTR I measured a sound level of only 51 decibels. That's 14 less that before! And by the way: the SSD literally cut my loading times in half. Before it took about 90 seconds from dashboard to start playing in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Now it's 40 seconds! So that's about it. Thanks a lot for sticking with me until that point and feel free to ask if you want to know anything. Cheers from Switzerland Martin

An attempt to sort through the piles of ludicrously priced 4K HDR TVs for PS4 Pro as well as a future PC build. I have made a few selections but seek for a more experienced advice. This is my very first post (or any sort of activity whatsoever) on these forums. Please try to help me out. However, the list I have made is as follows:JVC DM65USRToshiba 65L9300USceptre U658CV-UMCAll seem to have a very low response time quite suitable for gaming and all are 65 Inches diagonally. However seeing as one of the selling points of the PS4 Pro is HDR10 High Dynamic Range imaging (Which seems to be more than a marketing gimmick with very impressive results in real time) and the JVC and Toshiba models mentioned above were released an year before (2014) HDR10 was announced (2015), I would like to know whether any of these supports HDR, because other than that these seem to be quite impressive. In case you have your own recommendations on a Smart Television model which is 4K, HDR supported, a big enough upgrade from my family's current 40 Inch (ish, a bit more) Full HD set from Samsung which is also Extremely satisfying, please feel free to tell me.Thank you in advance for any support. I would like to apologize if there's a problem with my thread (again, I'm new here). Please let me know, if so.

So i dont own any gaming console should i buy the ps4 pro today or is the ps5 releasing soon enough?

Hi all, I want to play PS4 exclusives on the display that I use with my PC. It is a 1440p panel. Right now, there is a bundle on 1tb PS4 Slim with Horizon: Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4 and 3 months of PlayStation Plus membership. For %12 more, I can get a PS4 Pro 1tb with no games bundled. Is PS4 Pro a good experience on a 1440p panel or PS4 Slim w/ interpolation is enough for you. Also does it worth to get Pro version considering the deals?

Hi guys, can someone recommend me a good (or the best) 40-50 inch tv for ps4 pro gaming.

So i am going to buy a ps4 pro soon, but 10 minutes ago i saw vids and topics about the ps4 pro melting and being to hot. is that true? because i am scared that if i buy the ps4 pro that it will overheat orsomething. 400 euro is not nothing.. its a lot and i dont want to waste money on a warm ass console

Simple question. Is the ps4 pro the "ps4k" that people were talking about a few months ago: or is it just a newer ps4 that can handle the psv4?

I'm looking at what options there are for a 4k 60hz screen to use with the upcoming PS4 Pro. If it was a PC I would probably look at the likes of the ASUS PG27AQ but I read that the HDMI doesn't support full 60hz. Is this correct? A monitor (rather than a TV) would work better for me as I can also connect the screen to my work laptop, like I currently do with a cheap 1080 screen, but open to any suggestions you may have. So basically I'm after nothing bigger than a 27-28in screen to go on a desk mount that will give me a good display for the PS4 Pro for FPS games and can be plugged into a work laptop too.

Hello guys, I want to upgrade my current FHD 27" Asus monitor towards something....better. The question is, which resolution should I look for? I have PS4 Pro and recently I am gaming mainly at the PS4 Pro and occasionaly at the PC. As I have understood, PS4 Pro supports 4K resolution, but no curved monitor at the market supports 4K, because it is usually ultra wide monitor right? For example I would want something like this, but the resolution is 3840 X 1080. Would PS4 support such a resolution? Thank you for answers dear community

I have been holding off on getting a console for a while, and have been playing on my PC for the most part. I have a PS3 that came out in 2008, and its crapping out. I really only use it for Little Big Planet for my kid. Anyways, I have been waiting for the new Gran Turismo Sport to come out. On it's webpage, it claims to be 4k HDR compatible if you have a TV that supports it. I have a Sony Bravia 4k HDR with 3D compatibility, so that part I'm fine with... But does the PS4 Pro actually output to 4k or is it upscaled? I thought this was part of the console argument about PS4 Pro not outputting true 4k. I have looked online and find both to be rumored truths. Will purchasing the PS4 Pro actually give me real true 4K visuals or will it be upscaled? Also, I thought there was supposed to be a PS4 Pro refresh coming sometime this fall. Is this also true? I would be pretty pissed getting a PS4 Pro only to have it be replaced in a month or two. Thank you to anyone who can provide some solid insight into this. I'm very PC educated, but haven't spent much time with consoles other than the occasional repair for clients.

Hi, I'm having a tough time deciding whether I should buy a 40-45" 4k HDR tv or this monitor: http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-27UD69P-W-4k-uhd-led-monitor for my PS4 Pro. I don't own a PC so I would like the display just for PS4 Pro I'd really like to buy the TV instead but a few of my friends have convinced me not to because I will mainly be playing destiny 2 (fps) and the input lag on Tv's are quite high compared to monitors such as the LG. So my main question is, I will probably be able to tell the difference between a 10ms input lag and a 50ms input lag. But would this put me at a disadvantage in fps games? And also is the compromise of higher input lag worth it for the HDR? I've asked some people about their opinion and they've mentioned that theres no point buying a monitor just for a PS4 Pro. Is this true? Some extra information regarding my situation: TV Pros: - Watch movies - HDR Monitor Pros: - Connect MacBook Pro to it - Low input lag - Low response time - Budget of £800 for a TV - I have enough space to comfortably accommodate a monitor or 45" TV max Thanks, anyones input would be highly appreciated

Hey guys this is my first time posting here so here goes nothing I have the option to buy a budget PC with Pentium g4560 and gtx 1050 ti (I can provide full specs as well if needed) or to get a ps4 pro. I don't know that much about the differences between the two so I thought that someone from this forum might help me decide between the two. Furthermore, I use my PC for work as well but then again I could just get a ps4 pro for gaming and a cheap PC with integrated graphics for my job later on. In my country this budget gaming PC and the Ps4 pro have the same price. What would you recommend me to buy? Sorry for bad English and Thank you for reading this Cheers!

https://www.overclock3d.net/news/software/wolfenstein_ii_the_new_colossus_will_support_fp16_rapid_packed_math/1 So here's where things get interesting. Given that it doesn't appear that nVidia will have anything in the high end console space within the next 3 years what happens as more and more ports are optimized for AMD architecture?

I am currently playing the game and I am the point where Joel decides to take Ellie after the Horse scene. Truth to be told I expected a lot more or maybe it compensates later during the end? For now I see two people that are together. Don't know anything about Elliie, and Joel is just shooting and stealthing... PLEASE GIVE ME HOPE.

Too keep things short; I bougth an LG TV that includes Dolby Atmos and next thing I will do is to buy a gaming console and I am atm comparing PS4 Pro and Xbox one X with eachother. My questions on this topic however is as follows: - Xbox One X supports Dolby Atmos as far as I know, but is that only if you have a TV that includes Dolby atoms? - Will my TV enable Dolby Atmos while gaming regardless if I am playing on PS4 Pro or Xbox One X? (in that case does the Dobly Atoms feature that Xbox have really matter in my case? Keeping in mind that my TV already includes Dolby Atmos) Tv I got is: LG 55'' SK8100PLA I hope these questions make sense and that I might find the answear I seek.

I have this issue for awhile now, when I'm changing a disc it will auto eject and will took me 10 mins or more for it to accept the disk even if the disc is brand new. I sent my PS4 pro to sony to fix the issue and they did, but after a few months I'm having the issue again and it's out of warranty now. I have searched the net and only found a fix on the ps4 slim and none on ps4 pro. Have anyone here encountered auto eject on ps4 pro? TIA

Hi. I wanna buy a ps4 pro on black friday to play games such as uncharted, god of war, and red dead redemption 2. Yet, i don't know if i should just wait for the ps5. I'm fine with waiting for it, but there are certainly ps4 games that i wanna play. Therefore, i wanna ask: will the ps5 have backwards compatibility? Is it likely at all? Also, i would not buy the ps5 on release day. I'd at least wait a couple of months for the prices to fall a bit. ps4 pro or ps5?

Hello, I'm new in this site. I want opinions about 4K monitor for pc gaming and for ps4 pro. I believe ASUS ROG SWIFT PG27AQ and ACER PREDATOR XB271HK is the best 4k monitor on the market yet, but both don't have hdmi 2.0 and this is a problem for ps4 pro because it can not played 4k 60hz with hdmi 1.4. So I thinking about Dell U2718Q, the monitor has no g-sync but it has HDR and hdmi 2.0. I didn't find a lot of video reviews about this monitor, so if anyone has this monitor, please to tell me opinions about this monitor. Also i will be happy to read opinions general about 4k monitors or any suggested 4k monitor. It's better to wait for the 4k monitors with hdr and 144hz ?

Hi! Is there any way to make the ps4 pro output at 4k and then downscale it to 1440p? I want to play the Play Station exclusives on my Predator XB271HU but the PS4 pro just outputs at 1080p.
