I already have a Plex Media Server (PMS) setup on a Windows 2012 R2 server. With 2012 R2 end of life and security patches and the cost of Windows OS licensing (I cheap out "save as much money" as often as possible), Linux is looking like a great option as plex was in Linux, Linux can be smaller in required space and is still less commonly used (hopefully less commonly sought to exploit). Looking through articles and forum posts, I'm thinking the best options for OS are Ubuntu Server, Fedora Server or maybe FreeNAS. I have little experience with Ubuntu and no experience in the others or much of any Linux systems. I'm thinking that ZFS raidz2 is my way to go and not sure which features are best with Plex and which OS offers better compatibility and ease of updates. Thoughts, suggestions? Link to forum post about all of my thoughts plans on creating a whole new Plex Media Server setup. Link to forum post about ZFS zpool. Link to forum post about Linux optimizations running just Plex.

Hi all, Budget (including currency): Around 800 EUR Country: Spain Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: NAS Server, Time Machine Backups and as Plex Media Server capable of handling at least one 4k HDR stream. I am not sure if, for my use case, Intel or AMD is better, so I created the two setups in hopes of someone able to guide me Intel Option: https://es.pcpartpicker.com/list/Gd7hTn AMD Option: https://es.pcpartpicker.com/list/6yNNDq Anyways, hope someone will read this and be able to help and point out ways to do better on my first build. Thank you!

Good Afternoon, I am attempting to transfer large files across my local network to my media server (Plex). It is a custom built machine (I7 4790k, 16GB ddr3, MSI Krait MOBO, 4TB mass storage networked drive etc...) from my current gaming rig (ryzen7 2700x, 16GB ddr4, asus ROG MOBO etc...). When I transfer files, The speed is only 10 MB/s. I have searched google to look for what is giving me this issue. Yes all my points of networking is at least 1Gbit over ethernet. that is what a lot of the responses on google said. I have run the IPerf 3 test from both ends giving me 10MB/s results. If I were to do an internet speed test Im nearly at 900Mb/s consistently. I could really use someones help, because I have a large amount of files to transfer consistently. Thanks for the help, and if you need any more information from me, feel free to ask.

Hi everyone! I am new to this for first time with Linus Tech Tips which are my favorite on YouTube! So now point to my topic about setting up server in home to get thing up and running in processing so here’s what I need to make sure upgrade CPU, RAM, and Hard drives give enough room to keep it running. I have my own homemade rack mount, CAT5e wires running everywhere, custom router, Cisco equipment of networks, and everything in closet. Heres my current rackmount starting from top to bottom: Top - 24 ports CAT5e patch - Cisco SG300-28PP Switch - Vyatta 2600 (Lanner FW 8760 running untangle) - Desktop monitor and, Keyboard and mouse Middle - Dell Poweredge R610 running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Bottom - 2 Power stripes - CAT 5e intake - Arris CM8200 Other switch is in garage its SG300-10MPP There are two access point, one each in house and in garage, it’s Aironet 3502i dual band wireless N access point. I am looking forward to upgrade Wireless AC. I am not sure if I can choice to stay with Cisco or Ubnt. I only look for more stable, fast enough, roaming around, easy management, and of course, POE support. Two of access point I’m looking into are: Cisco WAP571 or Ubnt Unifi AC. I will be happy to hear from everyone a review those access point which are best and cheap I can find. Feel free to ask me opinion to make a change a better setup than current. So now for my Vyatta what I have, I upgraded in the following specification: CPU - Intel Xeon Quad X3450 4C/8H 2.66 GHz RAM: 16GB 4x 4GB DDR3-10600E UDIMM ECC unbuffers Storage: 1x 128GB SSD MLC (opinion for additional one more SATA, as RAID or ACHI) NIC: 8x Intel NIC OS: Untangle Firewall it running 300/30 providing by Cox but also included Verizon FiOS sitting as not active due switched to Cox to keep lower on bills. Also can upgrade to 1G/35 from Cox or 1G/1G from Verizon FiOS. Cox sucks (no rude but FiOS way better in my opinion due my parents switched it oh well.) My thought is Vyatta 2600 might retire anytime soon so I can get Dell R210 II to run pfsense or untangle I have not yet decision to choice. Reason why upgrade to R210 II cause they have AES supported and X3450 don’t dye old hardware. Now the fun part is storage server so they will be running as Plex Media Server, File Server, and possibly additional VPN, Ubnt, security camera, other server software in future. This storage server will be stay on 24/7 using low usage of power so here’s specification of Dell Poweredge R610. Dell Poweredge R610 CPU - 2x Intel Xeon Quad X5560 4C/8H RAM: 64GB DDR3-10600R ECC Storage: RAID 0 6x 300GB SAS 15K I am looking into upgrade hard drive so I’ve been looking into 6x 1TB or 6x 2TB but I’m not sure which best RAID I can use to storage all movies, personal files, pictures, backup, and many things on it. Also upgrade CPU to X5670 to handle plex media server to runs more than 4 maybe 6 at same time. Any idea would really appreciate it. Ive playing around with HP proliant DL360 G6 I got for $50, it got 1 cpu, X5560 and 4GB RAM and also one 500GB SATA. I will take some time to upgrade to dual X5670 and 64 or 72GB RAM and I am not sure if I can get 4x 1TB or 8x 500GB or 1TB depend on RAID system maximum of capacity. Also best RAID for those hard drive. For custom router, it will be always SSD at best performance and not much going on upgrade. For storage Server on R610 and DL360 G6, I only looking for 7,200 rpm or above hard drive at best but SSD are overkill in my opinion, HDD are longer lifespan than SSD at those day. For RAID setup, I want redundancy and performance at best instead RAID 0 cause it is risk for data loss. That’s why I need your option to find which suit my need. Thank you and looking forward to make this work as happily servers in closet to keep all of us happy, too!

Hey everyone, Recently I have been playing around with my Raspberry Pi 3B and using it as a Plex server. It was only temporary to see if having my own Netflix like service with my own content was something I considered worth having and I have really enjoyed having my content on demand. So I would like to convert my entire Blu-ray collection, however the problem is is that my RP3B has very limited storage and bandwidth and so I'm wondering whether I could run my desktop PC as my primary PC as well as a Plex server. Now my question isn't so much can I turn my PC into a Plex Media Server, because I know I can, but rather is there a way I can access the Plex server remotely when my PC is sleeping/hibernating? I was happy to run my RP3B 24/7 because it has low power consumption but my desktop PC was built for gaming and uses quite a lot more power in comparison. Is there a way I can sleep my computer when I'm not using it, but will wake up and sleep again automatically when I try watch a movie on Plex? For example I'm using it to write this forum post and will put it to sleep once I'm done, it would be great if I could then connect to my PC (running Plex Media Server) when I'm cooking dinner later with my iPad and have my PC wake up automatically to play the film and then go back to sleep once I'm finished using Plex on my iPad, I don't want to have to keep waking up my PC and putting it back to sleep just so I can use Plex. I hope that makes sense and that I haven't repeated myself too much, I find it difficult to explain what I'm wanting. Thanks in advance, Matt.

When I try to play original high bitrate content (around 30Mbps) Plex likes to skip. I looked at what the plex website had to say and they said it could be a memory limitation of the client machine. SInce it's direct play and no transcoding is being done(my server is already fast enough to encode any media on my server) and my network is already fast enough, gigabit on my server's motherboard, 100 megabit on my router (oof) i don't know exactly where the problem is coming from. I also have an identical server on my gaming pc since i haven't fully migrated to the new server. If i try direct play on the host machine with a web client on the same machine I still get skipping

Hello everyone from this awesome helpful community! (no sarcasm just sounds like it because it is the interwebs) I recently (like 2 days ago) upgraded my PC from an intel 4670 (non K) z87 platform to a X470 Ryzen 2700 ( non X) and now Plex Media Server has all kinds of issues. Out of thousands of shows and movies only a handful will play whether it be from the PC I'm on, the xbox or our phones. I know the content is good because when I plug the external drive into my wife's PC all the media streams just fine to any device. The only two changes that stick out to me are ONE I am running a Ryzen platform and TWO even though the Plex team confirmed this isn't the issue, I'm running an un activated version of Windows 10 ( not pirated just an OEM key that MS wouldn't activate due to hardware changes). So reaching out again to see what suggestions you'll might have?

Hi, Just been encountering issues regarding Bit defender free edition. For some odd reason its blocking Plex media server without notifying me of a possible threat. So its affecting transcoding on all my devices even my Servers desktop browser. Any one else encounted this issue?

So I got the idea to build me a headless media server and I need some help with component selection. Have not had a server before so this is relatively new to me, i'm more familiar with the PC side of things. I don't want to spend too much money on the server (up to $500 USD). I have checked into some LTT (Linus Tech Tips) and Paul's Hardware videos about this (check sources) and have got a pretty good grasp of what I will need to buy, but it would be good to first hear what you guys have to say and opinions you may have. This is my pick of components (as you can see by the choice of motherboard and case, I'd like a small machine) Location: Sweden Budget: $500 USD The goal of the server: Fast transfer speed between my computer and the server (1g) Torrent client (Deluge) Plex Media Server (1080p Remux streaming) NAS Server Reasonably low power Should be up and running 24/7 Sources LTT - Reliable Data Storage on the Cheap! I'm probably the only one that will move files to and from the server, my family will probably use Plex to stream to Chromecast etc. from the server via 5Ghz WiFi. The build will primarily be used for Plex Media Server, but also to some extent serve as a file server, and there will be some downloading too. The plan so far is to install 1 x SSD and 2 x HDD (not raid). I will do back up on external HDDs. Ubuntu will be OS. Location is Denmark, which may influence the choice of specific products. What I have come up with so far: Chassis: Antec NSK4482 Reason: Seems to be the absolute cheapest solution if you want a 80 plus power supply. CPU: I predict that my CPU max. requirements are around a passmark at 4000. This corresponds to transcoding of 2 x 1080p or 1 x 2160p (in the future). In addition I like to have a T-model due to low power consumption. i3-6100t meets the above and give me the best price / performance, as I see it. Then problems starts. I know now that I should have a LGA1151 socket, when I want a Skylake CPU. So I had imagined that I should have a motherboard with Z170 chip, and I have looked at ATX. In that case, it would be one of the following: ASRock Z170 Pro4S MSI Z170A PC MATE ASUS Z170-P ASRock Z170 Pro4 ASUS Z170-K However, I would like to have ECC RAM and then discovered that I can not find a single Z170 board that supports ECC RAM. Is it really true? If I want ECC RAM, I then have to go with the H170 chip. In this case, only these 3 boards to choose from: MSI H170A PC MATE MSI H170 GAMING M3 MSI H170A GAMING PRO If I choose H170 instead of Z170 I loose some things, but also get a little (which I do not know if I will use) See this link for comparison: http://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2099-intel-chipset-comparison-z170-h170-h110 That is the big question now: Should I choose ECC RAM and thus H170 or not ECC RAM and Z170? Thanks in advance!

I am in the process of planning a dedicated Plex Media Server. My CPU needs I expect is about a passmark at around 4000. I had assumed that it would be i3-4130t (Average CPU Mark: 4139) https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-4130T+@+2.90GHz&id=2035 with Socket LGA1150, Z97. But now Intel Core i3-6100T has come to the market, and it looks exciting. http://ark.intel.com/compare/90734,77481 As to price, Intel Core i3-6100T, Socket LGA1151, Z170 would be slightly more expensive...to more expensive, depending on how much money I throw at the motherboard. However, the problem is that I can not quite figure out how fast i3-6100T is relative to i3-4130t for example measured passmark. Is there anyone who can help me, and is there any valid arguments for me to maintain the choice i3-4130t, Socket LGA1150, Z97? All comments and suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance! EDIT: Had added 6300t in comparison link, so I have chanced it to 6100t...sorry for that

I'm trying to run a plex server at my house so that I can watch all my favorite shows while im out, but i'm not sure how to connect to the server when i'm not on the same network. I know i need to use port mapping for the server to be able to reach people outside my intranet, but what do I do if my outgoing ip changes? How can i connect to the server even when my ip keeps changing? plex webiste: https://plex.tv/
