Hi I am looking around for a new laptop. My previous laptop ROG Zephyrus has had its Motherboard fried and i am in the market for a brand new one. I am looking for some recommendations on what i should purchase. I am not interested in MAC I will need this laptop for CAD, Spreadsheet work, Office 365 Applications, 3D Modeling. My Budget is big. I am going to write it off as tax anyway. Is there a better laptop on the market right now for my needs or should i just re-purchase a ROG Zephyrus.

Hello, my name is Juan. This is my first build and I’m very excited about the whole process and I really don’t want to screw anything up. I’ll try to follow the forum’s posting recommendations giving you guys some context and then stating my questions, if its alright with you. Please excuse my English. CONTEXT: 1. Budget & Location 2000 USD. Bogotá, Colombia, but I don’t think it really matters for this post. I would most likely purchase the parts online and have them sent to me from the US. 2. Aim I’m an economist and a musician. I want to use the system mainly for somewhat different purposes between those lines, i.e.: some web browsing, office work, statistics, and data analysis software, maybe automate some web scraping and data collection processes; and intermediate-level home music recording and production. As an added value, I’d like to be able to edit video and ->eventually<- introduce myself into gaming, but this last one is kind of optional in the near future if it gets in the way of the main purposes I mentioned above, to be honest. 3. Monitors At this moment, I’m not planning to spend a whole lot of money on monitors since the main purpose of the system is not going to be producing a lot of graphic content, at least not at first. Nevertheless, I do plan to use the two monitors I currently use with my laptops: - Sony KDL-40EX407 40” 1080p LCD TV with HDMI connections as primary screen and - Samsung SyncMaster 920N 19” LCD monitor / TFT active matrix, with 1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz native resolution and 1 x VGA connection which I use as secondary screen (and I’m very fond of because I’ve had it for a long time, and its been reliable AF). 4. Peripherals I do have relatively new Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and I’m pretty much satisfied with their performance so far, so I’m not planning any upgrades in this area. However, on the music department I’d like to mention I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen and I’m pretty happy with it. Aside from that, I’d like to purchase a Lynx E44 PCIe interface in the future if I feel the need for upgrading since maybe I end up needing more audio inputs and I’ve read PCIe interfaces tend to have less latency and better sound quality as they are connected directly into the motherboard instead of a USB port. This upgrade is not entirely necessary but if in the future I have the chance ($$) I’d like to be able to do it. Regarding the OS, I was considering Windows 10 LTSC since it appears to be pretty stable and bloatware-free. 5. Why are you upgrading? I’m not really upgrading, I’ve been buried in laptops and my company’s work for years and due to the pandemic and the lockdowns I’ve resumed my music practice and fun and I’d like to invest in the proper tool for both worlds. 6. The parts I’ve researched: Here are the parts I’ve picked up from what I’ve researched so far (attached image). QUESTIONS: 1. I’d love to read your general input about this parts selection. 2. CPU: The classic Intel vs AMD, and if the answer is intel: 10th gen core i9 (10900k) or 11th gen core i9 (11900k) AMD vs Intel: I see latest gen Ryzen CPUs have remarkable performances (both single and multi thread), a higher core-count which would benefit multitasking which I do a lot, BUT also from what I’ve read in multiple forums, there are some compatibility issues which may arrive specially with certain DAW (music production software). So, in this category I’d like some kind of guidance in terms of this compatibility issues because if there are none, maybe AMD would be better just from the “horsepower” perspective in my opinion. Intel vs Intel: On the other hand, if Intel is the best choice (in order to ensure compatibility is not an issue), from what I’ve read, Intel’s 11th gen core i9 is not what anyone expected and it turned out to be a disappointment for gamers. However, not being a gamer myself, I saw that in some benchmarks core i9 11900K has a really good single thread performance, which is one of the aspects I’ve read are key for music production software since the audio signal path processing is linear and cumulative (not sure about the terminology but I hope the idea gets through). In order to play it safe, I chose the core i9 10900k, but that’s what I’m here for: doublechecking with knowledgeable people. 3. OS As I mentioned I’m a windows user and I think LTSC version of Windows 10 could be such a great choice due to its stability. On the other hand, I’ve been told by some fellow musician friends that there are some compatibility advantages associated to macOS in terms of music software but, in all honesty, I don’t think in this day and age this should be a problem. I already know that if I wanted a Hackintosh build I should pick up very specific parts and do some procedures I really don’t feel capable enough to pull off. However, I saw a video on LTT channel in which Linus and Anthony explain a way to use macOS on any machine using virtualization (https://youtu.be/ATnpEOo3GJA), but it needs to be done from Linux (which I’d love to learn how to use), specifically Majaro, and a dedicated graphics card using some complex passthrough procedures in order to let the virtual machine to make use of how many cores from the CPU I decide to assign to it and, if I want, the dedicated GPU’s whole processing power. So, here is(are) my question(s): is it too far fetched to use Manjaro and virtualize both Windows 10 LTSC and macOS in that environment in order to avoid dual boots or a Hackintosh setup and “jump” form one OS to another on the fly? Would I need a totally different setup in order to be able to do this? Does this whole thing make sense at all? Because if it does not, I would simply go with windows and that’s it. 4. GPU Either because this virtualization nonsense is possible or not, I’d really appreciate your help regarding this choice since in music oriented systems to be able to achieve a low-noise operation is crucial and if the gaming possibility is ahead I guess I’ll need a decent graphics card, so there is the usual performance vs noise trade-off I cant really solve by myself with the knowledge I have on the subject. I do apologize for such a long post, as you can see I’m curious and I’m very eager to learn and this seemed to be the place to ask this. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME.

Need recommendations for a OFFICE computer….
JakeStateFarm posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
Hey all! so I have a decent 3060 intel i7 and Mac mini for gaming, BUT i need a new work computer. Specifically the best for spread sheets, lots of chrome tabs, ect. like idk is a i7/i9 overkill? How much Ram? Does it really need a graphics card ? I might have 5 email tabs open, some CRM sites open, some excel sheets open and maybe google earth open. And I do use 2 monitors. What do I actually need to do this efficiently I have a i3 with 4gb ram computer at work (left over from who ever had the position before me) and it is slow as heck and takes no joke 20-30 seconds to load my email in the morning. I’ve had it take 2+ minutes to open a NEW BLANK excel sheet. So I want the best bang to buck ratio specs to look for a new one. thank you !- 8 replies

So I have been slowly pricing together a PC to replace my work computer (accountant stuff) and had the realization that I may be able to save some $$ and get a dual core w/ HT (Pentium G4560) instead of a locked I5 (i5-7500). Now, according to my boss I do want a quad core, since it will help a lot in some work tasks I normally do. But I am wondering will a Dual core w/ HT (4 threads) be comparable to some degree to a quad core (4 threads) when doing multi-core workloads or am I missing something?

So. I have some experience with Hewlett Packard's small form factor and ultraslim cases. The hp compaq 8300 USDT, specifically, intrigues me with space efficiency. The power supply is external though, and isn't small whatsoever, but they feature desktop CPUs and laptop GPU's, SO-dimms, 44.8 x 17.8 x 44.5 cm (h-w-d) of a very cute looking case. It's sturdy too, the "skeleton" resisting my attempts at bending it how it shouldn't bend very well, Unlike some Cheaptek™ towers that seem to be made of painted, thin lead covered up with aluminum foil. I think they're great. The motherboard is probably limited to only a few CPU's and doesn't have the cool kid features, but it's going to be cheaper than a decent laptop by far, and is far more flexible than a laptop. Wondering if there's any custom solutions, to this size of pc. Heck, if the case has to be stretched to fit a titan xp, i wouldn't mind. Has Senpai Linus talked about this? Space in a rented environment is always an issue, especially desk space, Feet space. Hand space. There-could-be-a-shelf-here-space. "But i don't like this laptop's keyboard" logical fallacy. Anyway. How to make a strong, independent ultraslim desktop? Does cramming more stuff in a small space look neat? It can obviously run Doom. Mods to screw a screen and a big fat battery to it? The new installment, HP EliteDesk 800 G3 doesn't seem to have room for a gpu, at 17cm wide and deep, takes less room than a on the actual desk, or drawer(which is where some people store their laptops until they need them)

Hi! What GPU and PC components do you guys reccomend for a 5-Monitor setup? I'm planning on building a strong PC meant for mostly options trading/schoolwork and maybe for some gaming. As for the budget, I'm not really on the tight side, so I'm fine with kinda expensive parts.

First of all hi, and let me explain why I am here, Short story : To find the lowest recommended specifications for a computer that will be used for productivity (i.e. update excel sheets) Long story : For the past (almost) two years me and my colleagues have been requesting for an upgrade on our computer systems, our reason for doing so: Most of our computers freeze for about 2-3 seconds for every cell we update on the sheet. We cannot have more than one spreadsheet open without encountering crashes. If a power outage occurs then some of our computers will not even boot properly while those that do, take at least 10-30 mins to boot-up and lets not forget the time it takes for all the startup programs to settle. The current overall specs that stands out to me: DDR3 1400Mhz (4GB) Intel i5 4570 HDD (Maybe 100 - 200GB since most of our stuff is on our servers we don't pay much attention to this, however it maybe important to note that they are always over 90% full on all computers) GPU - NVIDIA GeForce card used for dual monitors. Monitors : Resolution 1366*768 I have attempted to find some baselines or references, however since i am unable to find any reliable ones (mostly because no website says the same thing) i turn to you guys.

Hello everyone, I would much appreciate some help with monitor picking. The parameters I am looking for surely are: DisplayPort (from what i understand, there are more generations, i prefer the newer one) to connect to USB-C/mini DisplayPort 25"-32" (smaller is preffered) Little to no bezels with clean design (necessarily allowing for cable management and hiding them/minimizing their visibility Great resolution (1440p+, 4k would be amazing, but probably out of the price scope) 60Hz+ (however 60 is just fine for my needs) High static contrast ratio (min. 1000/1) high (350+ cd/m2) brightness Preferable: Charge throughput for 15in mbp and/or higher range thinkpads Some more connectivity accessible through the monitor (e.g. usb ports for wireless keyboard and mouse) No speakers, audio through or any other specialities are required, as they wouldn't be used. Budget constraint is somewhere around USD 400-450 per unit, however this is more of a guess, as my real limit is something around CZK 10-12k when purchased locally (21% VAT incl.) and the prices vary from US market heavily (no consistency, it happens that price order is reversed), thus take it with a grain of salt please. I have found Dell 2515H, which is nice, as it is not as costly, as i expected, however seems to be quite the "minimum". If you have any recommendations for me, i will be very thankful.

So, with tax season coming up, it's time to build my mom a new office pc. And I'm wondering how good this will be. CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 Mobo: Asus H97M-E/CSA LGA 1150 PSU: SeaSonic SSP-450RT 450W 80+ gold Memory: Adata (2x4) 1600 DDR3 I plan on reusing the case of her current computer, Not sure if I can reuse the power supply in it. Will also be reusing the HDD in it now. Just wondering if this would out-perform her I3, not sure about the I3's specifics, but windows lists it as an Intel Core I3 550 @ 3.20. Or would I get more for my money to just wipe her HDD, and install a new, bloatware free version of Windows 7? Just want something that blows her current computer out of the water. Edit: Not sure what to get for a cpu cooler. Not sure what would fit in the case.
